    1. [BP2000] Beattys in Venango Co., PA
    2. Are these Beattys (see below) part of L-5? I discovered yesterday that one couple, Thomas & Sarah BEATTY Carter (Thomas- b. 1752, d. 1851), is part of my wife's ancestry. My mother-in-law got a big laugh when I told her I'd married my cousin. I don't know how Sarah is related to the other Beattys. When I searched our present geographical index for Venango County, PA, the only hit I got was L-5. But, the L-5 lineage in the archives is not helpful. So, does anyone recognize these Beattys as being part of L-5, or any other lineage? Thanks. 3. Hi, My preference is still Family Tree Maker. Since you're already using an older version, your files will be in that format. Just make sure you've backed up your files before upgrading so you don't lose any of your precious information. 3. Di, If you send me scans of the letters I'll redo them in photoshop... The problem is that a photo file saved as a jpeg loses some of its clarity every time it is resaved. It is better if it is saved in a different file format. like BMP? Or keep a copy that you make other copies from.. So it isn't resaved all the time.. 1. [BP2000] John Beattie Obituary, died 1919, MI, born Scotland, L340
    2. Laurel Baty
    3. Dianna Wright of L340 sent this obituary to me and gave me permission to post it to the list. The Beatty DNA project is trying to find some Beattys with known ties to Scotland to participate in the DNA project. I am looking for information on John's brother, George Beattie, and also for siblings of his father George Beattie, Sr. George Beattie Sr.'s father was Robert Beattie of Ireland, who married Elizabeth Lamb.--Laurel Baty, L252 Courier, Charlevoix, Michigan, Wednesday, April 16, 1919 Veteran Of Mexican War John Beattie Dies At Age of Ninety-Three Years A Resident of Charlevoix for Twenty-Six Years - One of Oldest Masons in the Country Capt. John Beattie was born ninety-three years ago on a small Island off the coast of Scotland. When five years of age he moved, with his parents to the mainland, remaining there until the age of thirteen when he left home to come to this country. Arriving at Cleveland, Ohio, he immediately started to work on a boat, following this line of work until he had worked himself up to captain. Mr. Beattie was known to Charlevoix residents first as a summer visitor, coming here from New Orleans. About twenty-six years ago he moved with his family to this city where he spent the remainder of his days. About three years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and has been steadily failing since that time, death claiming him Saturday, April 12. He is survived by a wife and daughter, Elizabeth. Capt. Beattie was one of the oldest veterans of the Mexican war. He was also one of the oldest members of the Masonic order, having been a member of the New Orleans lodge for about sixty-five years. Funeral services were held Monday at 10:00 from the residence and remains taken to Chicago to be laid to rest in Rosehill cemetery by the side of his mother. Captain John Beattie. Aged Citizen Passes, Remains to Chicago for Interment. [This article is undated and a portion of it is missing.] Captain John Beattie passed away at his residence in this city last Saturday his death following an illness that extended back over a period of several months. Mr. Beattie was of Scottish descent and was born on the island of Arran, near the southern coast of Scotland, December twelfth, eighteen hundred and twenty five. Five years later his parents moved to the main land where he remained until he attained the age of thirteen years. When John Beattie was ten years of age he was bound out to serve an apprenticeship in the yards under a ship carpenter. This work evidently was not satisfactory for during the next three years he made four attempts to escape from under his work and master and ship as cabin boy on a sailing vessel. Three times he was captured and returned to his master at the shipyards, but on the fourth attempt was successful in his effort, shipping as a cabin boy on a vessel bound for the United States. For the next few years Mr. Beattie sailed on either the ocean or the Great Lakes, following the life of a sailor until the outbreak of the war between the United States and Mexico, when with three friends he enlisted at Cincinnati, Ohio, in Company H 13th Infantry, remaining in the service throughout the entire campaign, fighting in various battles enduring the hardships that usually fall to the lot of the soldier, but this was fully compensated for when the fortress of Chapultepec was stormed and captured by the American forces, during the last days of the war, Mr. Beattie being with the forces at that time. Soon after that battle Mr. Beattie was discharged from the service at Covington, Kentucky. Following his discharge Mr. Beattie again followed the life of a sailor and was in Cuba during one of the frequent riots on that Island, was arrested and placed in prison and flogged with a regular cat o' nine tails, finally securing his release and sought protection under the British flag as at that time [Here the column ends-probably continuing on at the top of the page.] 1841, Ardrossan Dist., Ayr County, Scotland page 6 George Beatie 45 [dies March 11, 1877, Saltcoats] George Bettie 18 WHAT HAPPENED TO GEORGE BEATTIE, JR?
