I am doing research in a Portsmouth, Scioto co., OH newspaper and the frequent references to Beattyville have me stumped. I know it is in Greenup co., KY, by 1876 it had been incorporated into Springville, Greenup co., KY however the community still had their own news in the paper as Beattyville under the Springville news. I can't even find Springville, KY. It has to be across the river from Portsmouth I suspect. I am curious which Beatty gave it it's name. I know L-1 Wm. Rochester (W.R.-son of Adam) was in Greenup co., KY on the 1840 census but I suspect it was named for an earlier Beatty. I am reseaching a John Beatty originally of PA who died in 1806 of malaria in Scioto co., OH and I noticed there was a business in Beattyville cir 1870-80 that had barges on the river owned by Beatty & Thompson. One of the early John Beatty's daughters married a Thompson. Does anyone know anything about this second Beattyville, KY and/or its namesake? Donna L-3

G. H. BEATTY The subject of this sketch is of English ancestry. His grandfather, George Beatty, was born at Trenton, N. J., about the middle of the eighteenth century, seven of whose brothers served in the army during the Revolutionary war. He was twice married. His second wife was Elizabeth (Cummings). Of this union were born one son, Charles, and two daughters, Nancy and Catharine. Nancy married Joseph Pangborn, of Rensselaer Co., N. Y., where their descendants are still living. He removed to Hunerdon Co., N. J., and afterwards went to live at Vienna, Independence township. Later in life he went to live with his daughter in Rensselaer County, where he died. His son, Charles Beatty, was born in Trenton in 1779; married Mary (Henry), oldest daughter of Herbert Henry, of Sussex County. Of this union were born Eliza (deceased); Stewart (deceased, in Michigan); Pernina, now living at Saratoga Springs, N. Y.; and George H. Beatty. Charles Beatty lived at Vienna, where he followed farming, and was for some time engaged in the manufacture of hats. In 1814 he removed to Hope township and settled on a farm to the west of that village. In 1829 he purchased the farm on which his son now resides. He died in 1858. George H. Beatty was born on a farm in Independence township, Dec. 13, 1811. His mother died when he was quite young. He acquired such an education as the neighborhood schoold afforded, and after quitting school remained on the farm until he was twenty-two, when he engaged in the cattle business, buying cattle in the West and bringing them East. This business he followed in connection with farming for over thirty years. In 1841 he bought the Union Hotel, at Hope, which was once the Moravian church, built 1781. He kept hotel for six years in connection with his other business, left the hotel five years, then kept it one year, when he disposed of his property and returned to his farm, where he still resides. In 1853 he was elected to the State Legislature and served during his term of three years. While in the legislature he was chairman of the committee on corporations and a member of the joint committee on assylums, besides being on other important committees. In politics he has always been a Democrat, and has taken an active part in all political matters, having been a delegate to the different conventions, _State, county, and congressional. He has always identified himself with town matters, and has held various responsible town and county offices,_freeholder (three years), town collector, and director of the county house. While he was connected with the town affairs the debt of the township of Hope was paid off, and since then it has remained out of debt. He has been a director of the Hardwick Insurance Company for twenty-five years. At the outbreak of the war (1861) he was chairman of the first war-meeting held in Hope for the purpose of raising troops, and took an active part in the matter. In 1838 he married Miss charity M. Beatty, which occurred on Friday, closed the earthly experiences of one whose lifw was closely associated with the early settlement and building up of this place. Mrs. Beatty was born at St. Petersport, in the Island of Guernsey, April 14, 1805, and when about a year old came to this country with her father, Thomas Sarchet. The family settled here in a rude structure and lived in that manner until Mr. Sarchet erected a log house on the ground at the corner of Main and Pine streets, where the building occupied by Boyd & McKinney's store now stands. In 1821 she married John P. Beatty, son of Col. John Beatty, one of the original proprietors of the town. Commencing with the first settlement here she witnessed all the changes that have taken place up to the present. Mrs. Beatty united with the Methodist Protestant church soon after its organization in 1830, and remained one of its faithful members till her death. Of a family of eight daughters and one son, six daughters survive her. The funeral took place from the Methodist Protestant church on Sunday, Rev. Scott, assisted by Dr. McFarland and Rev. Darrow conducting the services. Her remains were followed to the cemetery by a very large concourse of people. 1840 Guernsey Co., OH-Cambridge Twp. pg. 364 Beatty, JOHN P. 1 m 10-15 1 m 30-40 2 f und 5 2 f 5-10 1 f 10-15 1 f 30-40 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 1850 GUERNSEY COUNTY, OH Cambridge twp. pg. 265 1767-1755 John P. I don't think the Andrew Beattie of Donna's post can be the son of James Forbes Beattie--I found a death certificate for Andrew Beattie, aged 17, died Nov. 26, 1861, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire; father James Forbes Beattie, mother Jane Byres Beattie (maiden surname Copland), died of abscess of eye. Andrew is not mentioned in the will of James Forbes Beattie--I will post James Forbes Beattie's will and that of his father, Peter Beattie--this is a nice Scottish lineage. Oh well it was worth a try. Just goes to show what has been proved to me many times over the years. The initial obvious choice for an ancestor is very often wrong. Going back and reading the census for James's family. Several of the children were born in Syndney, New South Wales does this not sound like Australia not Wales as a birthplace??!! I can't seem to find a lineage for this group. Anyone recognize them? Donna L-3 November 24, 1905 The Courier (Connellsville, Fayette co., PA) ANDREW BEATTY DEAD For 20 Years He Was Mine Foreman at Morrell Andrew Beatty, for 20 years mine boss at the old Morrell works, died this morning at his home at Logan's Crossing, near Leisenring, aged 65 years. Mr. Beatty was born in Wales and came to the United States 40 years ago. He worked in the mines of Maryland and then came to the Coke region. After Morrell was worked out and the works were abandoned he moved to Valley Mines, where two years ago he received a bad fall. His side was injured by the fall and he was compelled to give up work. From the injury a bad sore developed. Two weeks ago this sore healed over, but it affected him internally and this was the cause of his death. He was a member of Fayette Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and this order will have charge of the funeral. Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: Roger, Mt. Pleasant; Robert, Adelaide; Neal, Little Washington; John, Australia; William and Charles, Masontown; Mrs. Jean Sheppler, Pittsburg; Mrs. Frank Rossell, Leisenring No, 3; and Miss Anna Beatty at home. One brother James Beatty of Alabama, also survives him. The funeral will take place Sunday. 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Agnes Beatter/definitely Beattie Home in 1880: Arnot, Tioga, Pennsylvania Age: 1 Estimated birth year: abt 1879 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Relation to head-of-household: Daughter Father's name: Andrew Father's birthplace: Sco Mother's name: Susan Mother's birthplace: Sco Marital Status: Single Race: White Gender: Female Household Members: Name Age Andrew Beattie 36 miner Scot Scot Scot Susan Beattie 36 wife Scot Ire Ire Andrew Beattie 15 son miner Scot Scot Scot Robert Beattie 13 son miner Scot Scot Scot John Beattie 12 son miner Scot Scot Scot Neal Beattie 10 son PA Scot Scot James Beattie 7 son PA Scot Scot William Beattie 7 son PA Scot Scot Jane Beattie 5 dau PA Scot Scot Charles Beattie 3 son PA Scot Scot Agnes Beattie 1 dau PA Scot Scot John Mc Lean 27 miner Scot Scot Scot 1900 United States Federal Census about Andrew Beattie Name: Andrew Beattie Home in 1900: Dunbar, Fayette, Pennsylvania Age: 58 Estimated birth year: abt 1842 Birthplace: Scotland Relationship to head-of-house: Head Spouse's name: Susan Race: White Immigration year: 1870 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Andrew Beattie 58 head Apr 1842 married 37 ys immigrated 1870-30 ys in US-naturalized, Scotland Scotland Scotland Susan Beattie 60 wife May 1840 married 37 ys immigrated 1870-30 ys in US-12ch 10 lvg, Scotland Scotland Scotland William Beattie 26 son Sept 1873 single PA Scot Scot driver in pit. 1910 United States Federal Census about Susan Beatty Name: Susan Beatty Age in 1910: 65 Estimated birth year: abt 1845 Birthplace: Scotland Relation to Head of House: Head Father's Birth Place: Scotland Mother's Birth Place: Scotland Home in 1910: Dunbar, Fayette, Pennsylvania Marital Status: Widowed Race: White Gender: Female Year of Immigration: 1880 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Susan Beatty 65 1900 United States Federal Census about Jeanette Scheppler Name: Jeanette Scheppler Home in 1900: Pittsburgh Ward 11, Allegheny, Pennsylvania Age: 24 Estimated birth year: abt 1876 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Relationship to head-of-house: Wife Spouse's name: Jean Race: White Occupation: View image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Jean Scheppler 26 head Apr 1874 mar 4 ys France France France -cook-immigr 1893 US for 7 ys PA Jeanette Scheppler 24 Oct 1875 mar 4 ys PA Scot Scot 1900 United States Federal Census about Agnes Rossell Name: Agnes Rossell Home in 1900: Dunbar, Fayette, Pennsylvania Age: 21 Estimated birth year: abt 1879 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Relationship to head-of-house: Wife Spouse's name: Frank Race: White Occupation: View image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Frank Rossell 30 head Apr 1870 mar 4 ys PA PA PA common labor Agnes Rossell 21 wife aug 1878 mar 4 ys 2 ch 2 ch PA PA PA Davis Rossell 3 son Oct 1896 PA Eugene Rossell 2.12 son March 1900 PA 1880 United States Federal Census (maybe a bro to Andrew) Name: Neil Beattea Home in 1880: Arnot, Tioga, Pennsylvania Age: 35 Estimated birth year: abt 1845 Birthplace: Sco Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head) Spouse's name: Jane Father's birthplace: Sco Mother's birthplace: Sco Neighbors: View others on page Occupation: Miner Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Name Age Neil Beattie 35 miner Scot Scot Scot Jane Beattea 35 wife Scot Scot Scot Andrew Beattea 6 son America Scot Scot William Beattea 2 son America Scot Scot 1900 United States Federal Census Name: Neal Beaty Home in 1900: Dunbar, Fayette, Pennsylvania Age: 28 Estimated birth year: abt 1872 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Relationship to head-of-house: Head Spouse's name: Christina Race: White Occupation: View image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Neal Beaty 28 head July 1871 PA PA PA coal digger Christina Beaty 24 wife Dec 1875 PA PA PA Eulela Beaty 4 Feb 1896 PA PA PA Margaret Beaty 10.12 July 1899 PA PA PA 1910 United States Federal Census Name: Robert S Beatty Age in 1910: 43 Estimated birth year: abt 1867 Birthplace: Scotland Relation to Head of House: Head Father's Birth Place: England Mother's Birth Place: England Spouse's name: Mary Home in 1910: Dunbar, Fayette, Pennsylvania Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Year of Immigration: 1878 Adelaide Town on top of page Household Members: Name Age Robert S Beatty 43 head mar once for 16 ys Scot Eng Eng coal miner(immig 1875 NA) Mary Beatty 33 wife mar once 16 ys 9 ch 7 lvg Germ Germ Germ (imm 1886) William Beatty 14 son PA Scot Germ Robert Beatty Jr 11 son PA Scot Germ Nellie Beatty 9 dau PA Scot Germ Edward Beatty 7 son PA Scot Germ Charles Beatty 5 son PA Scot Germ John Beatty 3 PA Scot Germ Paul Beatty 6/12 PA Scot Germ

I've gone over this again and again and I believe this links/merges L-46 & L-81. The spelling change from Beatty to Beattie is troubling but Mathew's age is correct and I believe Elmira could be called Ella. Coffeyville, KS is right on the border and very close to Lenapah, Nowata Co., Oklahoma. Donna L-3 The Daily Courier (Fayette Co, PA-Connellville) April 15, 1919 James Beatty, Sr., of Vanderbilt, who has been in bad health all winter, has taken a trip to Oklahoma in the hope that his health will improve. He will spend a few weeks with Mr. and Mrs. George Beatty. He made the trip last summer and was greatly benefitted. He expects to be gone several months and will visit relatives and friends in Kansas and Illinois. Mr. Beatty is seventy four years old but will make the trip alone. May 3, 1919 James Beatty, Sr. of Vanderbilt has returned home after a weeks visit with Mr. and Mrs. George Beatty of Lenapah, Okla. Jan., 30, 1924 GEORGE BEATTY DIES IN KANSAS DICKERSON RUN, Jan. 30-James Beatty received word Tuesday that George Beatty, a former Fayette Countian, had died at his home at Coffeyville, Kan. Jan. 28. He had been ill for a week with influenza. He was in his 63rd year. He left Broad Ford in 1875, when a boy. I have just read through the posting concerning the elopement and the connection to L142 but do not find that connection. Donna, I have looked at the L142 file that you send to me and it does not include a "Edward Beatty" or a wife with the maiden last name Kelly and I did not find the connection in the information in the digest. Love the story, just want to know how it connects! Thanks - Ellen L142 ________________________________________________________________________ Interested in getting caught up on today's news? BP2000 list members, Can you help her ~~~~~~~~~ Hi, I have no answers for you... I'm sending a copy of your email to the Beatty Project 2000. Hopefully they can help you. Nelda Nelda's websites - http://freepages.folklore.rootsweb.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/ ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Lindsay" <lindsaybnc@comcast.net> To: <nelda_percival@hotmail.com> Subject: These two Napoleons Beaty's??? Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2007 23:27:48 -0500 Hi Nelda Will you please tell me who these two Napoleon Beaty's are? Who did the first one marry? Also is Napoleon that married Cornelia White. He died in 1853. Is he not buried in Providence cemetery? How are the two Napoleon's related? I am still searching for information to link Napoleon and Cornelia's son Robert Beaty b.1840 to my Great grandmother Eliza Childers. Who may have been married to a Thomas H Maner/Maver?? June 4,1893 in Etowah Co Alabama. I feel almost sure this is my Eliza Childers. Who married a Robert Beatty listed in the Limestone Census in 1900 with a son William Napoleon Beatty. born Aug 8,1896. But Robert was not listed with them. Eliza was still listed as married 4 years. There is a record for a marriage of Robert Beaty to Eliza Mainer in Morgan County, Alabama, 27 April 1895. This is in a Morgan County marriage book. Still I don't know if this is the right couple. I would appreciate if you will untangle my brain about these Napoleons. . Thanks Carolyn 1-Napoleon Beaty buried in Providence Cemetery 4 Miles North of Smithton Mo. Parents Edward Beaty and Nancy Umstead. 2-Napoleon Beaty B April 24 1817 died Mar 29,1853 Pettis Co Mo. Parents Robert Beaty and Sarah Parrot. Spouse Cornelia White ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _________________________________________________________________ MSN is giving away a trip to Vegas to see Elton John.
