This is everything I have on John M. Beatty and Anna M. Marshall. Could his middle initial stand for Mackey? Donna L-3 This might be L-244 Title Progressive Men of the State of Montana Subject Montana -- Biography Description This book was originally published over 100 years ago. It is an 1886-page reference work containing over 2500 biographies, nearly 200 of which are illustrated with portraits. From Charlie Russell to all the early governors, there are biographies of most people who were prominent in Montana history between the 1850's and 1900. Publisher A.W. Bowen & Co. Date 1901 WILLIAM M. BEATTIE The firm of Beattie & Blessing stands as a worthy exponent of the stockraising industry in Fergus county. They have brought to bear marked capacity and discrimination in their business and command the confidence and esteem of the community. William M. Beattie was born in Fayette co., Pa., on the 2d of February, 1842, the son of John and Anna Maria Beattie, both of whom were born in Pennsylvania and represent good old families of that state. In his early manhood John Beattie devoted his attention to teaching school and later became superintendent of large ironworks at Uniontown, Pa. He was a stalwart Democrat, a man of strong character and great executive force, and served on the board of supervisors of Fayette county, and was also justice of the peace for years. He was a Presbyterian in religious thought, of which church his wife was also a member. His death occurred in 1890. His widow now resides at Iowa City, Iowa. They had eleven children, of whom Ella and Belle are deceased, the others are Sarah A., Anna K., Jane H., Alice A., William M., Mary M., Louisa B., Isaiah M., and George D. William M. Beattie attended the public schools of his native county and when sixteen found employment on a farm for two years, when he embarked in the same line of enterprise for himself in Rock Island co., Ill., until 1873, when failing health led him to close out his interests and make a trip through Kansas and Nebraska, and thence on to California. Here he remained some years, coming to Montana in the spring of 1882 and locating at Boulder, Jefferson county, where he conducted a successful dairy business until 1883. He then came to Fergus county and took up a squatter's claim twelve miles south of Cottonwood, which is now known as the Mahana place. Here he was very successful and here also he became associated with Samuel V. Blessing in 1888, the firm of Beatty & Blessing there continuing successful operations until 1898 when they sold the property at a good price, the ranch at that time comprising 320 acres. The partnership of the two gentlemen still continues, and since disposing of the Mahana ranch they have continued stockraising on a fine ranch of 524 acres, located nine miles south of Cottonwood. They give their attention paeticularly to the raising of a high grade of cattle. In politics Mr. Beattie is a staunch Democrat. 1840 United States Federal Census about Jno Beaty Name: Jno Beaty Township: Union County: Fayette State: Pennsylvania 1 m 30-40 2 f und 5 2 f 5-10 1 f 20-30 1 f 40-50 1850 United States Federal Census about Anne M Baily Name: Anne M Baily Age: 34 Estimated birth year: abt 1816 Birth Place: Pennsylvania Gender: Female Home in 1850 (City,County,State): Union, Fayette, Pennsylvania John Baity 48 blacksmith PA Anne M. 34 PA Sarah A. 17 PA Jane 12 PA Alice 10 PA William 8 PA Mary 4 PA Julia 9/12 PA 1860 United States Federal Census about Wm Beatty Name: Wm Beatty Age in 1860: 18 Birth Year: abt 1842 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Home in 1860: Canoe Creek, Rock Island, Illinois Gender: Male Post Office: Port Byron Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name Age John Beatty 57 farm 800-275 PA (all) Anna M Beatty 43 Adelaide Beatty 26 Jennie Beatty 22 teacher Wm Beatty 18 Mary Beatty 14 Louisa Beatty 10 Marshall Beatty 6 Ellen Beatty 4 Dawson Beatty 3 Laura Beatty 1 1870 United States Federal Census about Allice Beatty Name: Allice Beatty Estimated birth year: abt 1840 Age in 1870: 30 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Home in 1870: Canoe Creek, Rock Island, Illinois Family and neighbors: View Results Race: White Gender: Female Value of real estate: View image Post Office: Hill Station William Beatty 56 farm 400-2200 PA Mary 54 PA Alice 30 PA Mary 20 PA Louisa 15 PA Marshall 13 PA William 25 PA Ellen 10 PA 1880: Canoe Creek, Rock Island, Illinois Source: FHL Film 1254245 National Archives Film T9-0245 Page 228D Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Charles TROWBRIDGE Self M M W 32 IL Occ: Farmer Fa: NY Mo: IL Louisa TROWBRIDGE Wife F M W 29 PA Occ: Keeps House Fa: PA Mo: PA Clive TROWBRIDGE Son M S W 5 IL Fa: --- Mo: --- Lee TROWBRIDGE Son M S W 1 IL Fa: --- Mo: --- William BEATTY BroL M S W 38 PA Fa: PA Mo: PA TROWBRIDGE, CHARLES D -BEATTY, LOUISA B -ROCK ISLAND co., IL- 11/27/1873 1880: North English, Iowa, Iowa Source: FHL Film 1254345 National Archives Film T9-0345 Page 277D Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Ira P. BEATTY is a well-known practitioner of osteopathy, and together with his son, known as the young. doctor, Albert, has done much in the way of compelling recognition for their system, as the very extensive practice of which Dr. Beatty is the head bears testimony. The senior doctor is the son of John M. and Anna M. (Marshall) Beatty, both natives of the state of Pennsylvania, born of Scotch-Irish parents where they were reared and married, but who passed much of their lives in Illinois; both are now resting in a cemetery near Erie, Whiteside county, Illinois. Dr.Isaiah M. Beatty was born in Dawson, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, m March, 1854, and was three years of age when his parents removed from the old Keystone state to Rock Island county, Illinois, where the subject lived until he had passed his twenty-eighth birthday. He was educated there and for many years aided his father with a will in the cultivation Of the old homestead 'upon which he was raised. He was but twenty-two years of age when he married Lucy J. Schryver, of Erie, Illinois, and the birth of their first son, Dr. Albert H. Beatty, inspired the young father WIth a deSire for broader fields of activity and usefulness. It was in 1883 that Doctor Beatty and his young wife and child set out for Montana. He stopped in Boulder City for a few months, but in July pushed on to the Judith Basin in Fergus county, arriving there August 11th, where he has since remained. Here he engaged in dairying, but owing to the low price of dairy products decided it would not yield him an income sufficient to the needs of his family, so in March, 1885, moved to Maiden, where he was employed in the mines and mill. In April, 1887, the mines closed down. He opened a barber shop, and later moved to Gilt Edge, there operating a similar, establishment and stock raising in conjunction. At times he fell ill, from 1893 to 1898, and after a thorough experience with well-known and usually successful physicians in Montana, Illinois, Iowa, and in fact every prominent center in the United States in search of a relief for headache, stomach trouble, and nervous exhaustion, etc., he realized that the old recognized systems of materia medica were ' all guess work, and were failing to reach a large class of the ills of the flesh to which man is heir. As the result of continued study of the question in combination, with his practical experience, he finally decided, in March, 1898, upon osteopathy as the solution to his problem, and went to Helena, where he took treatment from Drs. A. D. and C. W. Mahaffay, osteopathic physicians, where he received. great benefit. After investigating osteopathy very carefuUy for two years he decided to move his family to Kirksville, the fountain head of osteopathy, where in February, 1901, he and his son entered the school, and two yearS later they graduated from that institution, whereupon they returned to Lewistown, and opened up the practice which has with the passing years assumed such splendid proportions. The young doctor now has a wife and family of his own, and has taken up his permanent residence in Lewistown. Doctor and Mrs. Beatty were the parents of five children: Doctor Albert, the eldest son, who is mentioned above; Mable, born on Cottonwood creek in Fergus county, died at the age of six years; John M. is a wholesale' cigar manufacturer at Stanford, Montana; Charles H: and Juanita, are still in the parental home and are the youngest of the five. On AugUst 24, 1906, the wife and mother died, since when the doctor married Lena W. Tuttle, the wife of Alex. Tuttle, of the firm of Tuttle' Brothers of Stanford, MQntana, their marriage occurring on January 16, 1910; at Butte, Montana. " The Beatty family affiliate with the Presbyterian church, although the doctor is not a communicant; he is a member of the Odd Fellows and Sisters of Rebekah Lodge, and in a political way is a Democrat, although he gives but little time to those matters. Work with his bees and fancy poultry constitutes his chief pastime. He is the owner of a fine ranch and he has come to be local authority on bee culture, devoting much time to their care. The doctor has lived in a number of states. and traveled in many, but none of them, in his opinion, can compare with Montana, the chosen state of his adoption.
I've been wondering if this is L-244 but not enough info to be certain. Isaiah goes by Marshall on some census. There's James & Wm in the same twp in Fayette and a Mackey near one of them on a census but there are plenty of Jas, Wm and John Beattie. Civil War Pension of John Beatty; Capt Company E 78 U. S. Colored Infantry; Certificate # 305,762; born Scotland [both spellings Beattie and Beatty are used in this pension claim] On September 29, 1884 George Graves, aged 64 and a resident of Fairchild, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, filed a claim for pension as the guardian of John Beattie, "now insane." He states "John Beattie was enrolled on the 5th day of March 1863 In Company E of the 78 Regiment of U. S. Colored Infantry commanded by said John Beattie, Captain, and was honorably discharged at New Orleans, La on the 29th day of August 1864. That his personal description is as follows: age 48 years, height 5 feet 11 ½ inches, complexion light, hair brown, eyes blue." In a deposition dated April 24, 1885 George Graves states "he first met him [John Beattie] in Rome, New York in August 1883.that the next time he saw said Beattie was at the house of deponent in Fairchild, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin about the 12 of June 1884 when he came with his wife intending to remain but a short time. At that time he was sick and insane and grew worse rapidly so that he was committed to the Northern Hospital for the Insane at Oshkosh Wis., on or about the 17th day of June 1884. This deponent upon diligent inquiry made with great pains has as he verily believes ascertained upon reliable information that said Beattie upon returning to Buffalo NY after his discharge in New Orleans was employed as clerk in a dry goods store until the latter part of 1867, that he was so afflicted with chronic diarrhea as to unfit him for his duties as such clerk and for that reason left his place as such clerk. That upon being advised that riding on the cars would tend to check the diarrhea he engaged as messenger for the Merchants Union Express Company and run as such messenger over the Erie Railway between Buffalo and New York until Dec. 1, 1868, that from that time until April 16, 1875 he was messenger for the American Express Company and ran over the NY Central Railway between Buffalo and New York. April 16, 1875 he was granted leave of absence and visited friends in Scotland, being absent three months. Upon his return he was employed by the same company on Canandaqua Lake, NY with head quarters at Woodville. Nov. 19, 1875 he was put on the run as messenger for same company between Buffalo and New York. January 1876 he was made extra messenger going wherever required until Dec. 12, 1876 when he was again put on regular between Buffalo and NY. Dec 1, 1877 he was put on the route between Suspension Bridge and NY where he remained until Dec. 1, 1879 when he was appointed agent of said company at Medina NY where he remained until March 1, 1880 when he was made agent for said Company at Rome NY where he remained as such agent until June 1884." On Form 3-402, dated July 31, 1898, John Beattie states that he is a widower. He was married to Clara S. Moore January 8, 1882 at Rome, New York. He has no children. This is a family I've seen in books for many years. Using the 1906 Hist of Westmoreland co., PA and other sources I put the family together. They marry into some of the very early colonial families but came to the US in 1826. Rather amazing how those Beatties' liked the Pattersons. If anyone wants a .ged file let me know. I couldn't find this as a lineage. Donna L-3 Descendants of Robert Beattie Generation No. 1 1. REED: 200 Years of History in New Alexandria, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania By The Bicentennial History Committee Published by the New Alexandria Bicentennial Committee in Cooperation with the Community of New Alexandria, Pennsylvania BEATTIE FAMILY Robert Beattie emigrated to the New Alexandria area from Ireland. It was here that he met Mary E. Reed, who was a descendant of James Reed. James Reed was born in 1710, and came to Pennsylvania in 1728. It was here in Pennsylvania that he met and married Margaret Floyd. When Margaret was a child her family was attacked by Indians. Her parents put her on a horse and sent her away from the cabin, thus saving her life, for they were both killed. James and Margaret (Floyd) Reed were the parents of the following children: James, Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin, John, Thomas, Sarah, and Mary. Another descendant of James and Margaret Reed was Samuel Miller Reed. He was the son of General William Reed. It was Samuel Miller reed who built the Old Stone Inn in 1800. Robert Beattie decided to return to Ireland where he then sent for Mary E. Reed to join him. It was in Ireland that they were married and two of their children were born. They then returned here and settled on a farm three miles east of New Alexandria. This farm is now known as the Pignocco farm. Robert Beattie's brother Joshua Beattie lived on a farm close by; this farm is now known as the Harry Elliot farm. Robert and Mary (Reed) Beattie had the following children: Elizabeth J., William R., R. Campbell, Anna who married James Gibson, James P., and Martha C. William Reed Beattie, born in Ireland 1866, son of Mary Reed and Robert Beattie, married Anna Patterson. Anna Patterson was the daughter of Rebecca and Robert Patterson. She is mentioned in the history of the Patterson family, and was a direct descendant of Jane Craig. William and Anna (Patterson) Beattie had the following children: A. Lena M. Beattie, married J. Herbert Fennell. 1. Nelda M. Fennell married A. Alan Bowman a. Vicki Lynne Bowman, married Dean Walters. (1.) Brandy Deane Walters 2. James H. Fennell, married Veronica Strycula B. R. Hello Gerri, I bought the book last week in Richmond at the NGS conference. Dr. Pruitt was there with a booth and had many of his books with TN, SC and NC land info. TN Land Warrants Volume 4 is in 3 parts, soft cover and has 491 pages crammed with info. Dr. Pruitt's website lists all his books: _http://home.earthlink.net/~abpruitt_ (http://home.earthlink.net/~abpruitt) The website also has a lot of great info about the early land grant procedures in NC and TN. Nel, Is this a new email address for you? If so, I need to change my address book for you. Also, re the two entries I sent to you: In the first, the grant referenced land "adjoining" Alexander Beaty. This could be a different Alexander. In the second, it is a grant 'to' Alexander Beaty. Don't know if the distinction makes any difference. Just thought I would mention it. Hello Willie, Thanks for this info. I don't think I have seen it before (or at least not lately) and it is very interesting. It certainly could have been near the area where the early L2B Beatys settled. Sullivan Co was created from Washington Co. in 1779. In 1783 Green Co. was also formed from Washington Co., and the two counties shared a longer border than they do today for a while. I wonder if this Alexander is an earlier L2 generation. I'm pretty sure that L2A's Alexander M. wasn't born until 1785-94 so that rules him out. My L2B Alexander was born in 1769 and if I read this right, he would have only been 11 when the grant was entered. I guess that is possible if he was REALLY big for his age, but... In his RevWar pension application, Thomas Travis who became L2B Alexander's father in law in 1801 says he lived in Greene Co. for four years from about 1798. That could at least put them all in the same area. Believe Alexander's father Billy lived south of the current Blountville area on Beaver Creek in Sullivan Co. I just got a new book and found the following entry for Alexander Beaty which also mentions Greene Co. I'm sure this one is my L2B Alexander with his brother Andrew listed as a chain carrier. I'm thinking he might have earned some money to pay the fees in 1793-4 when he was in the Indian War. Certainly wish I was smarter when it comes to land grants, etc., but I'm pretty sure some of these early settlers were also confused as to where they were living at any given time. "Tennessee Land Warrants, Vol 4, Greene Co. and Sullivan Co. Warrants" by Dr. A. B. Pruitt, page 59: Warrant # 413 (297). Thank you. I was looking at this John Sr and John Jr. on the 1851 Ancestry index since John said he was born in cir 1849 in Nova Scotia. Probably lots of others, though. Did not realize the census didn't give names. Will have to wait for 1861 to become available. Donna L-3 Hi Donna, I do have World Ancestry. The 1851 Census for Canada is similar to the 1840 Census of US--the 1st 5 questions have to do with the # of buildings then the questions are # males under 10, # females under 10, etc.. Here are the inhabitants: John Beattie Sr. (indexed Jr. by Ancestry but I read this as Sr.): 1 female under 10; 1 male 10-20; 1 female 30-40; 1 male over 50; 1 female over 50 John Beattie, Jr.: (4 families in 1 dwelling) 2 males under 10; 1 female under 10; 1 male 10-20; 1 female 10-20; 1 male 30-40; 1 female 30-40 [The 1st 5 questions are # inhabited house; by how many families?; # houses being built; # of uninhabited houses; # outhouses or barns]--my guess is Mardi's links give the numerical answers to the questions. Nel, Last week I was in Greene and Washington Counties in Tennessee and found a reference to a land grant that was made to an Alexander Beaty and when I came home and looked in my notes under Alexander noticed some possibly disparant information. Without researching it, I can't tell whether a note I have from you regarding land grant in Green County KY on waters of Lick Creek is possibly different from what I found, or what. Here is what I found: In Early East Tennessee Taxpayers, XIV. Greene County, page 160, by Pollyanna Creekmore, the following entry: "page 365 No. 1433, Elizabeth Cameron - 260 acres in Greene County, adjoining Andrew English, Alexander Beaty. Sealed 11 April 1780. " and "page 367 No. 1434, Alexander Beatty - 80 acres on the waters of Lick Creek, adjoing James McBay, James condry. Entered 6 March 1780. Sealed 12 April 1797." Unless you are already aware of this reference, you might want to check it out, to see if it is the same Alexander Beaty. Hope you had a good Memorial Day week-end. Willie

HISTORY OF ONTARIO, NEW YORK AND IT'S PEOPLE-1911 BEATTIE. Herbert Beattie, Whose family has been well known in New York state for a number of generations, belongs to that class of citizens of this country, who form the bone and sinew of the entire body. They are descended from Scotch ancestry, and have brought the sturdy bodies of that country. as well as the thrifty and practical habits of their ancestors, and combined them in the manner best adapted to the needs of their new home with the modern methods which are so rapidly introduced into agricultural pursuits in America. (I) James Beattie, the immigrant ancestor of Herbert Beattie, was born in Scotland in 1764. and died in this country in 1840. He was evidently a man of authority in many directions in his day. and was one of the founders of No. 9 Presbyterian Church. in 1807. served as an elder for many years, and was holding that office at the time of his death. He married Jane Grieve. (II) David. son of James and Jane (Grieve) Beattie, was born in Scotland April 6. 1799, and died on the family homestead in Ontario county, New York. He was but three years of age when he came to this country with his parents. In 1828 he purchased the land, for farming purposes, which has since been considered the family homestead.
