HISTORY OF WESTMORELAND CO., PA-1906 JOHN BEATTY, JR. Among the many beautiful and fertile farms which abound in VVestmoreland county, Pennsylvania, which show the results, not alone of thrift, industry, and cultivation, but also that the most progressive and scientific methods have been called into play to render them the pride of their Owners, we must not overlook that belonging to John Beatty, Jr., which ranks as a model farm in every respect. Mr. Beatty traces his descent to Irish and German ancestry, who nobly bore their share in defense of the country of their adoption. Benjamin Beatty, grandfather of John Beatty, Jr., and founder of the family in this country, was born in the county of Derry, Ireland, in 1745. He 'was quite young when he emigrated from his native land, and upon his arrival here located in the eastern part of Pennsylvania. He was enthusiastic and patriotic, and when the colonies rose in revolt against the tyranny and oppression of England he was one of the first to enlist in the Continental army in 1776. He was one of that brave band of patriots, who on the night of December 25, 1776, crossed the Delaware amidst snow and ice, and under the personal command of Washington fought and won the battle of Trenton, and were equally victorious in other engagements during that memorable struggle. His honorable discharge from the army is attested by papers still in the possession of some of his descendants. He resided on a farm in Adams county, Pennsylvania, in 1785, and in 1809 sold this and removed to Washington county, Pennsylvania. The following year he purchased from Marmaduke Wilson, his brother-in-law, the farm known as "Sportman," at Beatty Station, Pennsylvania railroad, in Unity townnship, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. He immediately made his home on it and built the first bank barn in the township the following spring. This farm had been patented May 7, 1790, by James Hunter, who had taken up six hundred acres of land prior to securing the patent, but sold part of the farm, retaining for himself two hundred and seventy-six acres. The portion sold was purchased by Rev. Theodore Bronwers, and is now the property of the Order of St. Benedict or St. Vincent Abbey, He lived to a hale and hearty old age, his death occurring at Beatty Station, Pennsylvania railroad, June 2, 1831. He married, 1785, Martha Chamberlain, of German descent, born in 1755, died September 6, 1845, in her ninety-first year. Their children were: Hamilton, of whom later; John, Jamison, Samuel, Ann, married ----- O'Brien: Mary, married ---- Osborn; Elizabeth, married (first) ----- Sloan; married ( second) John Lightcap; Martha, married William Cochrin; Marjora, married William Mcfarland; Susan, married Jonathan Tittle. Hamilton Beatty, son of Benjamin and Martha (Chamberlain) Beatty, was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania, in 1786. Hamilton and his brother John purchased the farm of their father in 1824, and at their death this property passed into the hands of John Beatty, Jr. Hamilton Beatty served with honor in the war of 1812, and aided in building Fort Meigs. He was an industrious farmer, a respected citizen, and served his town in various local offices. Politically he was a Democrat, and his church affiliations ,were with the unity Presbyterian church, of which he was one of the most consistent members, and filled the office of elder for a period of fifty-six years. He died at his home at Beatty Station, July 10, I871. He married, September I, 1817, Sarah Anderson, born September 27, I796, died May 25, 1879 daughter of Colonel William and Nancy (Tittle) Anderson. They had seven children, three of whom died in infancy. Those who attained maturity were: Nancy Tittle, born August 1, 1818, widow of John George, resides at Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania; John, Jr., born September I4, 1826, of whom later; Martha Chamberlain, born August 9, 1829, married Joseph Baldridge, died in 1903. Sarah Ann, born March I, 1835, widow of Major Samuel Adams, resides in Beatty Station. John Beatty, Jr., second child and only son of the surviving children of Hamilton and Sarah (Anderson) Beatty, was born and reared on the farm which he now owns, September 14, 1826. His education was acquired in the common schools of the township and at Elders Ridge Academy, Indiana county. After leaving school he began his active career as a farmer, an occupation he has sucessfully followed all the busy years of his life. The old Beatty homestead, his home, contains two hundred acres in all, in a fine state of cultivation. Mr. Beatty is a well read man on all subjects, especially in agriculture in all its branches, and conducts his farming operations in the most approved modern method. He is a Democrat in politics, and has served the township as school director for twenty years. He has always taken the deepest interest in educational, religious and all matters pertaining to the welfare of the people. He is a member of the Unity Presbyterian church, in which institution he served for many years as trustee. He took an active part in the erection of the new church edifice in 1874, devoting time and labor to the preparation of the ground, and the laying out of the beautiful cemetery at unity. He is a member of Gravel Hill Grange, No. 849, P. of H., and of Latrobe Lodge, No. 30, A. O. of U. W. Mr. Beatty married, June 20, 1855, Eliza Jane Chambers, born June 22, 1832, only daughter of William and Elizabeth (Leasure) Chambers, (see sketch of William Chambers), and sister of Eli Chambers, former treasurer of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. Her education was obtained at the public schools and at Sewickley Academy. She was a member of Unity Presbyterian church, and died September 19, 189I. The children of John and Eliza Jane (Chambers) Beatty were: 1. Charles Albert, who at the time of his death, March 31, 1882, was a student at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, having previously been graduated from Washington and Jefferson College. 2. Lizzie Leasure, educated in the public schools of the township, the Latrobe high school, and at the Washington Female Seminary. She is her father's home-keeper and faithful daughter. 3. Jessie Quindora, died March 15, 1863, aged one year. 4. John Hamilton, educated in the township schools, and is a graduate of the Latrobe high school. He is a farmer and manages the homestead farm, where he resides near his father. He married, October 12, 1893, Nettie Beam, and has three children: Charles Albert, John Leasure, and Julia Elizabeth. John Hamilton is a Democrat. 5. Sarah Stella, educated in the same schools as her sister Lizzie, and became a professional nurse, being graduated from the western Pennsylvania Hospital at Pittsburg, where she is now one of the head nurses. 6. Lillian May, educated in the same schools as her sisters, and in addition was for three years a student at a Chicago kindergarten college. She is now director of the kindergarten department in the Bryant public school, in Chicago, Illinois. 7. William Chambers, educated in the public schools, and is a graduate of the Latrobe high school, Greensburg Seminary and Wyoming Seminary. After this thorough preparation he entered Cornell University at Ithaca, New York, taking a four years' course in mechanical engineering, and graduating in 1903. After leaving Cornell he was successively employed by the Osborne Harvester Company and the Cambria Steel Company. He is now assistant superintendent and mechanical engineer at the Iroquois Iron Works, Buffalo, New York. He married, October 30, 1905, Edith R. Graves, of Ithaca, New York, who is also a graduate of Cornell University.
It looks like there is quite a bit about Benjamin in the GRC index on the DAR webpage--his grave is marked by the DAR etc. I will take a look and see if I can find a Patriot file. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna VanZandt" <donavan@netwtc.net> To: <bp2000@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 27, 2007 11:53 AM Subject: Re: [BP2000] Old land record-L-103 > You could try if you think there is a possibility. Donna, Do you want me to check for a Patriot file for Benjamin Beatty? Sometimes these contain Bible records or other family information. I was planning to go to the DAR Library next week. Laurel ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna VanZandt" <donavan@netwtc.net> To: <bp2000@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 8:33 PM Subject: Re: [BP2000] Old land record-L-103 It's L-103 I would really like some imput on this. does anyone have the time to study L-103 and L-78 and the two wills I posted. Do you think Walter is the father or the brother of Samuel.? Not certain who Chalkey was but the two I cited were from doing the Augusta deed index. This is the deed index entry which was the proof that Samuel was the father of Benjamin. In a later county history John Beatty, Jr. mentions his grandfather Benjamin bought the land from his b-i-l Marmaduke Wilson and Samuels will names a son Benjamin and a dau Susanna who is married to Marmaduke Wilson. L-78 says the father of old old Samuel was Walter. Benjamin of L-103 was born in 1744 Derry, Ireland so giving papa 25 ys Samuel could have been born cir 1719 and Walter 25 years earlier. They came from Ireland I figure around 1750. I wonder if Walter is a brother and not a father to Samuel. Read L-78 and see what you think. The question I keep wondering about is why Benjamin is not in the will of Walter. He names 3 grandchildren but not Benjamin. I tend to think Samuel and Walter are brothers not father and son. Still most of Benjamin's children are not known except by name and the same with Samuel's two sons John and Wm. and Walter's son Wm. I keep wondering if he is the elusive "friend William" Henry of L-95/180 mentions in his will. He could be in VA, tho if Samuel kept the VA land. Lots of early PA stuff here. Westmoreland co. After diligently pursuing his studies for some time, he was admitted to the bar, March 4, 1889, soon after the death of his father. He began the practice of his chosen profession by entering into partnership with R. S. Holt, under the firm name of Wilson & Holt, of which he is still a partner. Mr. Wilson's undivided attention is given to his chosen profession, and like his father, he has built up a splendid reputation. Sarah Cummings, an attractive daughter of David and Sarah Cummings, of Freedom, Pa., became the wife of Mr. Wilson. Their home is brightened by the presence of four children namely: Marion, Caroline, Samuel B., and Richard. In his political attachments, Mr. Wilson is a stanch Democrat, and, although he labors zealously for the success of his party, he has never sought office nor cared for political distinction, being very much like his honored father in that respect. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity of Beaver. Our subject is a direct descendant of Samuel Wilson, who was of Scotch origin, and his wife was a descendant of the early Knickerbockers. Early in the eighteenth century, he married Mary Van Wier, who was born in Holland. This worthy couple owned and occupied a farm along Marsh Creek, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There he engaged in tilling the soil, and spent a peaceful and happy domestic life, and there they both died, leaving two sons: Samuel, and Marmaduke, who was the great-grandfather of our subject. 226 BOOK OF BIOGRAPHIES Marmaduke Wilson was born upon his father's homestead, and in 1744 was united in marriage with Susan Beatty. The young folks started out in life at the homestead, caring for the old parents very lovingly until the death of the latter. They then removed to Westmoreland county, Pa., and continued to follow agricultural pursuits for many years. The names of their children were: Patrick; Samuel; Rachel (McFarlan); Jane (Dunlap); Susan (Marshall); Easter (Rambo); Martha (Gibson); Sarah (Mitchell); and Elizabeth (Byers). About 1801, Patrick Wilson located in Beaver county, the part now called Lawrence county. There he followed mercantile pursuits, and in 1804 his marriage with Rebecca Morehead, a daughter of William Morehead, occurred. They had the following children: William; Marmaduke; John; Susan (Phillips); Nancy (Chriss); Sarah (Harper); and Samuel. In 1811, Mr. Wilson purchased a farm near New Castle, where he spent many happy years, and finally died in 1866. This farm is still owned by his descendants. Samuel B. Wilson, father of George, was born February 20, 1824, and from early childhood his aspirations were beyond those of his playmates. He was a faithful student in the district schools, from which he entered Jefferson College at Cannonsburg, Pa., graduating therefrom in June, 1848, with about the highest honors of his class. He enjoyed the distinction of being a noted linguist, and his mastery of the English, Latin, and Greek languages was never questioned by either his fellow students, or the professors. Moreover, he not only kept up with his studies when the college course was ended, but greatly increased his knowledge of the ancient classics by daily reading and timely reviews. Soon after leaving college, he was chosen principal of Darlington Academy, a position which he held until the fall of 1849, when he went to Somerset county, and became a law student in the office of the Hon. Jeremiah S. Black, who was then president judge of the Sixteenth Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Mr. Wilson was admitted to the bar, November 12, 1850, and immediately thereafter went to Beaver, where he practiced in the several courts of the county, and in due time acquired a lucrative practice, which occupied his time for more than a quarter of a century. He was engaged in the interests of the most important legal business that has been transacted in Beaver county. His receipts for professional services have perhaps been greater in amount than that of any other resident lawyer who has at any time practiced at the Beaver county bar. Samuel B. Wilson, although an active politician in the interest of the Democratic party, never sought office. The height of his ambition was to become a thorough scholar, and an honest and successful lawyer; he loved justice, law, and peace. In the practice of his profession, he outlived the ambition of display before courts and juries, he learned to bear criticism without irritation, censure without anger, and calumny without retaliation. He BEAVER COUNTY 229 learned how surely all schemes of evil bring disaster to them that support them, and that the granite shaft of a noble reputation can not be destroyed by the poisoned breath of slander. In 1856, he purchased of Judge Agnew, the Susan Cochran estate, one of Beaver's oldest homes, and a substantial building for its day, located on the north side of the Park, on Turnpike alley. Here Samuel Beatty Wilson had his office and reared his family around the old-time fireplace. This handsome old estate is today owned by the subject of this sketch, as his father left it later in life, and purchased a handsome brick residence on the adjoining lot, which was built by Senator Quay. There Mr. Wilson spent the remainder of his days, passing to the life beyond the grave in January, 1889. His widow is still living, and occupies the same home in which he left her. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and passed all the degrees from the F. & A. M., to the Knights Templar. April 11, 1854, he led to the hymeneal altar, Elizabeth Robinson, a daughter of George Robinson, who was then sheriff of Beaver county. As a scholar, a student, and an assistant, Mrs. Wilson had been of great assistance to her husband, besides being a kind and loving mother, who reared a family, and is loved and esteemed by all. Their children were: Sarah, now deceased; Anna, wife of A. R. Whitehill, a professor of physics in the University of West Virginia; Mary, wife of George Davidson; and George, the subject of this sketch. George Wilson is held in high repute in his community, and is a man whom all respect and honor. He has a pleasing address and is liberal in his sentiments. His genial disposition and reputation for honesty have made him a favorite not only with his brother practitioners, but among all classes. He was the son of George W. Beatty and Elizabeth Fisher. There's been a bunch of tangling and disentangling going on in L-130 and other western NJ Beatty lineages, which I haven't been following as carefully as I should have; hopefully the DNA study will get some of those loose ends tied up. It's L-103 I would really like some imput on this. does anyone have the time to study L-103 and L-78 and the two wills I posted. Conspicuous among the successful attorneys who devote their whole attention to the active practice of their profession, stands George Wilson, the subject of this brief biography. Mr. Wilson attended the Beaver High School, and after completing its course, he began the study of law with his father. Donna, <<I really wanted to know if the land was in VA.>> My guess would be VA, but I really don't know for certain. I looked at my photocopies of pertinent pages of Chalkey, Vol. III, and find the citation you mentioned earlier. It says the tract is "on Collin's Branch, Robert Scott's line, Patrick Frazier's line." It doesn't say who the grantor was. But, the citations in your most recent message indicate that the grantor was Mathew Thompson, Sr. as in: May 24, 1771 -Samuel Beaty from Mathew Thompson, Sr. B&S vol. 17 pg. 268 May 24, 1771 -Samuel Beaty from Mathew, Sr. & Rachel Thompson Release vol. 17 pg. 270 It is interesting that I don't find those two citations in Chalkley. I wonder why. If one would try to locate the original 1759 grant to Mathew Thompson, Sr., it might be revealing as to location. Regarding Samuel Beaty, I can't speak to who he was (what lineage). Sorry I can't be more helpful. Les Beaty, L-20
