Beatty of Jasper County, Iowa, published in the Portrait and Biographical Record of Jasper, Marshall, and Grundy Counties, Iowa in 1894, "The Beatty family is of Scotch ancestry, and was prominently connected with the Presbyterian Church in Scotland prior to the religious revolution, but at that time they left the country and settled in the North of Ireland." The first two generations, below, are undocumented and unproven. ~~~~~~~~ They lived in the Scottish lowlands in the Dalbeattie area ~~~~~~~~ John and Jane existed as individuals, but the proof that they were the parents of John and James has not been discovered. They may have been the parents of James and John, identified below. According to research of Marlene K. Smith, "After the battle of Boyne in 1690, John and his two sons, John and James, left Scotland along with a large influx of Scottish families for the northern counties of Ireland." Among those who succumbed to disease and hardships on the voyage were John Beatty and his wife and five children, and also a child of Christiana. The Beatty's surviving the voyage settled at Little Britain, New Windsor, N.Y. Christiana Beatty, widow of John of Antrim, Ireland was a sister of Charles Clinton, granddaughter of William Clinton, a grandson of Henry Clinton, second Earl of Lincoln. By a former wife, her husband John Beatty had William, Elsie, John, Arthur and James. John Beatty Jr. died on shipboard leaving sons Arthur and James. (NOTE: This is a little confusing it is better to give dates on a person rather then JR? Junior to whom making him whose son? Exact date of emigration not named. Nominated for sheriff of Ulster County in 1691. He was the first resident of Esopus, now Kingston, and later moved to Marbletown where he was a large owner. June 9, 1719, 700 acres were confirmed to him by trustees of marbletown, Deputy Surveyor of Province of New York. Surveyed and laid out Livingston Manor at request of Robert Livingston, the first Patroon. John Beatty married November 7, 1691 Susanna Ashford. He died in Ulster County between April 26, 1720 and March 9, 1721. John Beatty's children: Robert 1692-1742 ; Charles, and Agnes and John baptized in 1701 in Cecil County, Maryland. John Beattie, Company M & I of 1 NY Mounted Rifles, Civil War Pension Certificate # 781,583; widow Ellen Beattie, Certificate # 335,103; filed New York On June 10, 1889 John Beattie, aged 57 and a resident of New York City, New York County, New York State, filed a claim for an Invalid Pension. He declares that "he is the identical John Beattie, who was enrolled on the 1st day of Sept. 1862 in company I of the 1st Regiment of NY Mounted Rifles commanded by Captain Fairgrace and was honorably discharged at Richmond Va. as a Sergt. on the 27 day of August 1865; that his personal description is as follows: Age 57 years; height 5 feet 9 inches; complexion fair; hair light; eyes blue that while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at South Mills in the State of North Carolina on or about the 15 day of May 1863, he contracted typhoid malaria and gastric fever affecting his stomach..That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the City of New York in the State of New York and his occupation has been that of a Plasterer." A death certificate for John Beattie is in the file. It shows that he died December 13, 1887 at Presbyterian Hospital, in the City of New York, State of New York. He was age 57 at his death and his occupation was Plasterer. He was born in Ireland; his father's name was Alexander and his mother's name was Martha. He was buried at "New York Bay"; his undertaker was F. J. McConnell. On January 16, 1890, Ellen Beattie, aged 54 and a resident of New York City filed a claim for a Widow's pension. She is the widow of John Beattie who died December 13, 1890. She was married to John Beattie on April 27, 1858 at St. Peter's Church in New York City; her maiden name was Ellen Dougherty. She states that John Beattie had one child under the age of sixteen at his death: Florence Beattie, born May 15, 1876. A certificate of marriage for John Beattie and Ellen Dougherty is in the file [Ellen's name is shown as Helen on the certificate.] The certificate states they were married "according to the Rites of the Protestant Episcopal Church." A certificate of Baptism for Florence Beattie is in the file: She was baptized at the West 44th St. United Presbyterian Church on January 22, 1877. Ellen Beattie was last paid at the rate of $12.00 to May 4, 1891. Since all references are to them being Scottish, it is probable that they fled Scotland and were a Protestant enclave in Ireland for at least one generation before arriving in PA and and 2 years later moving to NY and founding the village of Salem. This William inherited a 40 A. farm in his father's will (William Beaty SR ) who died 1845... the land description on that patent is - NESE sec19 TWP 50N, Range 20W Saline. and should be in the deed transfer records of 1845.. William (JR) and wife Lucinda left Mo for Texas about 1854, I think....so probably sold more land at that time.. Guess I am hinting..for some 'lookups'.if you get back to the courthouse in Marshall... #5 - L2D Robert & Elizabeth Beaty.Apr 1839..They bought land about this time and moved to what became Bates Co. Teresa, I thought the same thing, but then, I realized that Robert must have clicked the Reply button, thinking that he was replying to the person who posted the message, but he did not notice that the response went, ONLY, to the BP2000 Mailing List, instead of the person who had posted the message. I do not know at what point or what year this changed, but we used to be able to reply the person who posted the message. If we hit the Reply All button, the reply used to go to both, the person who posted the message and to the BP2000 Mailing List, and now, it just goes TWICE to BP2000.
