Let me clarify and expand upon some points about GenMatch. When we started the BeattyDNA Project in 2000, the subscribers of BP-2000 decided that we should establish a separate discussion group for DNA results. I created a Yahoo eGroup we called GenMatch. This group site can be found at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GenMatch/ Anyone who is interested in following our project is welcome to become a member. Originally, anyone could just go to the website and click JOIN and become a member. Over time, we found spammers joining eGroups (including ours) and sending advertisements, etc., to the membership. To combat this practice, I added a restriction to the joining process so that when someone clicks the join button of the website, their request for membership is held in suspense until I approve it. Normally the person requesting membership adds a brief note which helps me determine if they are legitimate. Since Yahoo sends me a message when someone wants to join, I usually act on them within a few hours. We presently have 128 members on GenMatch. Some of these are also members of BP-2000; but some are not. We are constantly encouraging new members to submit their lineages to BP-2000 because some are unaware that BP-2000 exists. It is indeed an active discussion group. For the first 9 months of 2007, 1,064 messages were posted. Of course, the number varies from month to month from 33 messages in February to 308 messages in July. As Nelda pointed out, we try to keep the discussions on GenMatch pointed toward our DNA project and discussions on BP-2000 focused on Beatty genealogy in general. The distinction becomes really blurred because our GenMatch discussions often deal with the documentation of various Beatty lineages. Often it is difficult to determine what should be posted on BP-2000 and what should be posted on GenMatch. To preserve my personal sanity, I simply don't worry about it. I figure if someone wants to cover both bases, they can subscribe to both. (I'm all about easy solutions.) I believe everyone is familiar with our "public" website at http://www.beattydna.org/ . On this site we discuss the DNA Project, GenMatch, and BP-2000. We are fortunate to have Earl Beaty as the administrator of our DNA project. ('Administrator' sound better than 'Genetic Guru.') Earl is our liason with our testing company and provides the basic analysis of test results. Genetics is a complicated business, and Earl does a masterful job of breaking it down for us to understand. Other GenMatch members have become quite knowledgeable of genetic genealogy. Thus, new members venturing into this area for the first time will find people ready, willing, and able to help them understand what DNA test results might mean to their ancestry. The Andrew and Sally Koger Beaty Reunion will be held Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Wolf River Methodist Church in Pall Mall, TN. The gathering will begin about 11:00 a.m. with a covered dish lunch at noon, and further family sharing of photos, memorabilia, and stories afterward. Andrew Beaty was a descendant of James Beaty, b. 1752 Nottingham township, Chester Co PA. Sally Koger Beaty was a descendant of Hans Jacob Koger, b. 1710 in Germany and d. 1783 in Henry Co VA.
