    3. Thank you so much for this information. I had no idea that more documents might exist. I will follow through to see if I can get similar information once I receive (hopefully) the paperwork from Madison Co, Illinois. I'll keep your e-mail so that I remember the precise documents that might be out there. Thanks again! BEATY and Mary Ann NAGLE Karen Here is something I had learned about a Naturalization Process that my Grandparents from Germany to USA followed that provided a lot of valuable information. I learned it by chance after ten years of trying to find out how they got to the USA. 1. I all ready had their Original Naturalization Document that they had been issued to them in Los Angeles Co., CA. My Mother had given it to me. 2. I took their Naturalization Document to the NARA Los Angeles Co., CA Archives and within a very short time they provided me with the following documents. a. Dept. of Commerce and Labor Naturalization Service, Certificate of Arrival for Naturalization Purposes - They landed at Montreal, Quebec, Canada giving the date of 26 Sep 1909 and the ship, Montford, they arrived on. With that information I went on line and found that the Montford had picked them up at Antwerp Belgium. Apparently they had taken a train from Berlin, Germany to Antwerp, Belgium first. I was able to get a copy of the ship's Manifest and found them on it. They were listed as Russians.I guess Germans were not being let in at the time. b. Their United States of America Declaration of Intention Document - It gave a description of my grandfather, occupation, where he was born, the date he left Germany,Port of entry, his last place of residence in Germany and where he currently lived. c. Petition for Naturalization - This included additional information how they got from Montreal down through Port Huron to Chicago on the Grand Trunk Railroad. d. Finally on the 26th of May 1917 my grandfather, Freidrich Welhelm Gottfried Hubert received his Naturalization Document in Los Angeles Co., CA. 3. I volunteered once to look up a naturalization for someone in my county. I finally found boxes and boxes of them in the courthouse basement on a high shelf. They had been sitting around for over a hundred years. I went thru boxes and boxes and was literally looking like a chimney sweeper when I found the name Lawler and his guy. It was a big disappointment. Less info than I had already sent him. I remember turning the paper over and on the back it gave the NY county where he had filed his intent papers for naturalization. He wrote me later that they were a goldmine of info. Guess you never know but I suspect most NA papers are supposed to say where the intent was filed. Seems like I remember reading exactly how many years had to elapse between filing intent (minimum number of years) and NA but I don't remember anymore. 3. Hi Laurel, I just wanted to update you on the Nagle naturalization information at the Lovejoy Library in Edwardsville, Illinois. First, I was told that I needed to call before coming. Their hours are 8 to 4 Monday through Friday, but they aren't always available. Every time I called, I'd get an answering machine. Finally, I left a rather pointed message regarding my many attempts to reach them. About an hour later, a man contacted me. When I told him what I needed, he said that I would not be able to access their records. Instead, I would have to give them the information regarding what I needed, and they would look it up. If it is there, they would mail it to me. I asked if there was an index anywhere. The man said that there was no index and that I would just have to call each time that I wanted a name checked. In addition, he said that all other court records were at the NARA facility in Carbondale which houses the Madison County records. He said that the Lovejoy Library just kept naturalization records so that it would be convenient for some local people. Overall, this is very frustrating. I hope that they take the time to search for these items and provide copies for me. Not only should they provide an index, but they should also find a better way to let the general public know that the records are housed there. It bothers me that all NARA documents are housed at Carbondale while these records are housed in Edwardsville. Now, I am watching the mail each day with the hope that I get the needed documents. 3. Hi John, We have a gentleman from Scotland who has recently submitted a DNA sample and he is descended from a Beattie family from Insch, Aberdeenshire. Research in Scotland is really quite easy now that Scotlandspeople is on-line: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/welcome.aspx This is a paid webpage run by the government of Scotland--all of the birth, marriage & death records have been digitized and are available on-line for a fee. A search for Richard Beattie born in Aberdeenshire in 1847 turns up in Insch, Aberdeenshire: Richard Beattie, son of William Beattie in Over Boddam & his wife Anne Morrison born Jan. 6, 1847 >From Ancestry.com [Looks like William Beattie died c 1850, so no death certificate will be available for him] 1851 Scotland Census Name: Richard Beattie Age: 4 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847 Relationship: Son Mother's Name: Ann Gender: Male Where born: Insch, Aberdeen Parish Number: 203 Civil Parish: Insch County: Aberdeenshire Address: Upper Boddam ED: 3 Page: 9 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 35 Line: 18 Roll: CSSCT1851_46 Household Members: Name Age Ann Beattie 37 Ann Beattie 7 George Beattie 9 John Beattie 1 Richard Beattie 4 William Beattie 10 Source Citation: Parish: Insch; ED: 3; Line: 18; Year: 1851. 1841 Scotland Census Name: William Beattie Age: 25 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1816 Gender: Male Where born: Aberdeenshire, Scotland Civil Parish: Insch County: Aberdeenshire Address: Overbaddom Occupation: Shoe Maker Parish Number: 203 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Ann Beattie 25 William Beattie 25 William Beattie 1 John Ingram 20 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Archie Beattie Home in 1880: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 7 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873 Birthplace: Tennessee Relation to Head of Household: Son Father's Name: Richard M Father's birthplace: Scotland Mother's Name: Margret Mother's birthplace: Scotland Neighbors: View others on page Occupation: At Home Marital Status: Single Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Name Age Richard M Beattie 33 born Scotland Margret Beattie 28 Archie Beattie 7 Edward Beattie 1 There is a death certificate for Anne Beattie, widow of William Beattie shoemaker, age 81, died June 11, 1898 in Insch, Aberdeenshire, informant is son John Beattie. If you need help with census just let me know--obviously Anne Beattie is in Scotland until her death. I find Richard living in a household as a servant in 1861. I do not find a marriage for him in Insch, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I also do not find a passenger record for him. A research strategy would be to follow all of the children of William and Anne and trace them forward. Another research strategy might be to submit a DNA sample--the gentleman from Insch, Aberdeenshire who has submitted a DNA sample has traced his ancestry back to before 1800 and has a well documented genealogy so a comparison with him could be useful. 2. STEPHEN BEATY
    3. MAKE SURE TO SCROLL DOWN AND READ THE WHOLE THING....... January 4, 1931: "BATTEY-JENKINS MARRIAGE EVENT OF BRILLIANCE IN BEAUFORT, SC. The marriage of Miss Nell Jenkins of Beaufort and Dr. Colden Rhind Battey of Augusta marking a union of families socially prominent in neighboring states was an outstanding event of Saturday evening, taking place at the Gold Eagle Tavern in historic old Beaufort, SC. Situated at the water's edge and ablaze with myriads of lights, the tavern, one of the town's widely known winter hostelries, presented a scene of colorful brilliance on this occasion, the entire lower floor decorated with palms and garlanded with smilax, being thrown open to the guests. The ceremony, solemnized by Rev. Aloysius McEvey, rector of St. Peter's Catholic church in Beaufort, was performed before an improvised altar, glowing with white tapers in silver candelabra, and adorned with tall silver vases of while flowers. (Portions not transcribed about the music, etc). First in the wedding procession came the ushers in pairs: Messrs. Richard Stockton Jenkins, uncle of the bride, Alfred Battey, brother of the groom, Lawrence Harper and Dr. Hervey Cleckley. The maid of honor, Miss Constance Jenkins, sister of the bride, walked alone, gowned in pale turquoise satin carrying an arm bouquet of pink roses. The bride, regally beautiful, entered on the arm of her brother, Robert Emmett Jenkins Jr., by whom she was given in marriage. Her waddling gown of ivory satin with long tight fitting sleeves, cowl neck, and a vest of rose point lace, had a normal wait line girdle caught with a sparkling buckle of brilliants, and a full skirt falling to the floor in billowy folds (Portions not quoted about veil, etc). The groom attended by his brother, Dr. W.W. Battey Jr., as best man, met the bride at the altar (etc). A reception at the Jenkins home immediately followed the ceremony. Receiving with Dr. and Mrs. Colden Battey were Mrs. Robert Emmett Jenkins Sr., gowned in black chiffon and lace; Mrs. W.W. Battey Sr. wearing a gown of black Chantilly lace; Miss Constance Jenkins, maid of honor; and Mrs. E.F. Jenkins, grandmother of the bride, in a handsome dress of black chiffon. Miss Mary Jenkins, younger sister of the bride wore a blue and silver gown (etc). Servicing at the reception were Misses Sallie Mae and Cora Lee Kitchins, Angie Luther, Martha Outlaw and Challis Carrier." The couple left for a honeymoon in New York City and other points, after which they will reside in their new home at Glenn Avenue. The bride, the daughter of the late Robert Emmett Jenkins and Ella Jones Jenkins of Beaufort, represents a family prominent for generations in the social and political life of this section. On her paternal side she is the great-great-granddaughter of William Jenkins, law partner of President Buchanan, and a direct descendant of Thomas Heyward, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Through her maternal grandmother, Mary Erwin Duncan, she descends from the famous Ereving Clan, which gave many kings in Scotland, among whom may be mentioned the noted Robert Bruce. Her ancestor, Brigadier James Erwin rendered conspicuous service in the Revolutionary War. She is the granddaughter of the late William Jones of Augusta. She inherits the loveliness and charm of her mother, recalled as a great beauty and belle. Dr. Battey, a native Augusta, is a lineal descendant of Caleb Carr, Colonial Governor of Rhode Island in 1649. His great-great-grandfather, William Henry Battey, established the family seat at Louisville, GA, and the name became closely associated with the old South. James Wilson, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Stephen Heard, Revolutionary governor of Georgia, whose military record has become a matter of history, are among Dr. Battey's notable forbears. Of French origin, Dr. Battey's maternal lineage is from the noble houses of de Barbot and de Chastaigner. The Arc de Triomphe de l'Etolle bears the name of General Etienne de Barbot, Bernard de Chastaigner followed the banner of Saint Louis to the Holy Land, and his coat of arms hangs in the Hall of Crusades at Versailles. Dr. Battey, a son of the late Dr. William Whatley Battey and Louise Barbot Battey, comes of a family distinguished in the medical annals of Georgia. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, the University of Georgia Medical College, and a member of the Chi Zeta Chi fraternity. The groom's immediate family in Beaufort for the wedding included Miss Terence Battey, wearing a princess gown of flesh charmeuse with a corsage of lilies of the valley; Mrs. W.W.
