    3. Note that I just added the two sample page images on the Crossle page so you can see what the originals look like. These images are sized down to about 40% of the original image so as to not be too big for web viewing. ...Mike Allen -----Original Message----- From: bp2000-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bp2000-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ann Sterling Sent: Saturday, January 05, 2008 12:20 PM To: bp2000@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BP2000] Crossle Bound Beatty Notebook, Ireland Laurel Baty wrote: > Hi Ann, > > I doubt very much that OCR software would be any use with these documents. > This is from a microfilmed copy of a handwritten document--written by a man > with very bad hand-writing! 3. Hi Ann, I doubt very much that OCR software would be any use with these documents. This is from a microfilmed copy of a handwritten document--written by a man with very bad hand-writing! I am afraid this must be done the old-fashioned way--by humans not computers. The Bound Beatty Volume is Philip Crossle's most legible notebook. It contains his transcripts of many documents that no longer exist (most Irish wills, census, court records etc. were destroyed by fire in 1922). The digital copies I have are tif files and if you want to see one let me know--but trust me OCR won't work! I just want the information to be available to Irish Beatty researchers. It is difficult to go through 400 plus frames on a microfilm reader and really know what you've read and seen. If the information is converted to searchable text many Irish researchers may find information that they did not know existed. There are a total of 12 Crossle Beatty notebooks. 3. Mike Allen has added a new section to the BP2000 Archives, "Crossle Genealogical Abstracts Collection" http://www.natural-software.com/bp2000/crossle/crossleindex.php This is an index of the Bound Beatty Notebook, created by me, and a handful of transcribed pages. Our goal is to completely transcribe the Crossle Bound Beatty Notebook. Right now we have 4 volunteers (myself, Mardi Carlson, Julie Miller and Connie Beaty) which mean we each need to transcribe about 100 pages. We would like to find a few more volunteers to help with the project. I will send you digital images to transcribe from. If anyone is interested in participating in this project or has previously transcribed some of The Crossle Bound Beatty Notebook and would like to contribute those pages to BP2000 please email me at: laurelbaty@comcast.net or laurel.baty@verizon.net. 2. I am forwarding this e-mail.... The POW list includes 2 Beattie's G. and William Beattie. Julie, L.39 I've spent the last week doing a huge update on my Ruhleben Story website at http://ruhleben.tripod.com , with over 1700 British civilians now identified as having been interned at the Ruhleben civilian POW camp on the outskirts of Berlin. It is believed that about 5,500 POWs were held here from 1914 to 1918, including my great uncle John Paton. Many of them were merchant seamen, and many of them Scots. Most were arrested upon the outbreak of hostiltiies in Europe and interned, in response to the British arrests of German nationals in Britain. The site is free to access, and if you had a relative interned there I would love to hear from you! Chris Paton [

    1. [BP2000] Rev. Archibald Beatty & the KS Temperance Laws

    3. I was curious about this Archibald Beatty and this is what I could find. His son Wm. H. is a puzzle. Unless there were two Wm. H. Beatty born in NJ July 1857 he must have divorced his first wife and married a different wife. Donna L-3 The Globe Atchison, KS March 22, 1881 The third of the series of Lenten sermons now being delivered in Trinity church, by prominent clergymen, will be preached this evening by the Rev. Archibald Beatty, D. D., pastor of Trinity church, Lawrence, and member of the Board of Regents of the State University. Subject: "Internal Experience a witness to the truth of the Gospel." The Rev. Archibald Beatty is the gentleman who lately declared that he proposed to administer wine as a sacrament in spite of the law against it. 1881 (same paper-forgot to get date) Rev. Dr. A. Beattyof the Episcopal curch at Lawrence, long a Regent of the University, and a Christian gentleman, spoke as follows in his church last Sunday: "Most of this congregation are doubtless aware of the fact that a temperance law has been passed in this state but few of you I think know that it absolutely forbids the use of wine in the scarament, punishing the minister who administers the sacrament with two years imprisonment in the penitentiary, and shutting up the church in which the act was done as a public nuisance. I need not say to you that I shall go right on with our services in spite of this law. The bishop and clergy of our church have decided to pay no attention whatever to any such law.......(another paragraph) May 6, 1881 Rev. Dr. Beatty, the Lawrence minister, having declared that he would administer fermented wine at the communion table , was threatened with arrest if he attemped any such infraction of the law. "Every temperance paper in the state," says Dr. Beatty, "denounced me in unmeasured terms. The Topeka Capital declared that "the law is against fermented wine at the communion table, " and held me up as "raising a factious opposition against the law."Another paper the Kingsly Republican after a tirade of personal abuse, said "We hope soon to know that the law has laid its heavy hand upon this man and that he has been made to feel its force." "We want to see him snatched up by the law and then see them shatch him baldheaded." The pulpit has also lent itself to the utterance of the vilest slander and I have been informed of a public meeting in which a committee was appointed for the purpose of villifying me in the daily papers on this question. I have received abusive anonymous letters on the subject and a large number of papers with articles marked, containing such approbious epithets as could be applied only to the most despicable characters. 1850 PA SCHUYLKILL SCHUYLKILL 75 81 BEATTY ARCHIBALD 27 1823 PA ARCHIBALD BEATTY 27 PA IN HOTEL RUN BY HENRY KEPNER ARCHIBALD - PROTESTANT EPISCOPALIAN CLERGYMAN ;19 AUG 1850 BY F.LAUDERHAUS 1860 United States Federal Census about Arch Beatty Name: Arch Beatty Age in 1860: 36 Birth Year: abt 1824 Birthplace: Ireland Home in 1860: Philadelphia Ward 8, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Gender: Male Post Office: Philadelphia Value of real estate: View Image Household Members: Name Age Arch Beatty 36 PE clergyman 1000 Ireland Mary Beatty 34 Ireland Anna Beatty 4 PA William Beatty 3 PA Leighton Beatty 2 PA Mary Beatty 5.12 PA Maggie Porter 27 domestic Ireland 1870 United States Federal Census about Archibald Beatty Name: Archibald Beatty Estimated Birth Year: abt 1826 Age in 1870: 44 Birthplace: Ireland Home in 1870: Fort Scott Ward 2, Bourbon, Kansas Family and neighbors: View Results Race: White Gender: Male Value of real estate: View Image Post Office: Fort Scott Archibald Beatty 44 Episcopal minister 1200-1200 Ireland Mary S. 39 Ireland Anna S. 14 PA William H. 12 NJ Leegleton V. 11 PA Ellen? Connelley,1918, transcribed by Tonya Burks, student from USD 508, Baxter Springs Middle School, Baxter Springs, Kansas, September 7, 1999. Kansas and Kansans: Volume 5 Nellie Griswold Beatty.Every man, woman and child in the City of Lawrence knows Mrs. Nellie G. Beatty. Being a native daughter of Kansas and of Lawrence, and having been during the last fifteen years in charge of the popular public library, her name is familiar in every home in the city. Her parents were Dr. Jerome F. Griswold and Helen Mary (Hewitt) Griswold. They were among the early settlers of the free state town, and Doctor Griswold was one of the victims in the inhuman massacre of the Quantrell raid. Nellie Griswold grew to womanhood in Lawrence and attended the public school, the high school and the State University. In college she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Down town she was connected with such organizations as the Friends in Council, the Congregational Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was married June 18, 1885, to W. H. Beatty. Their son, Jerome Griswold Beatty, has made an unusual success as a newspaper correspondent and short story writer. He is at present publicity director of the McClure Film Corporation. His wife was Dorothea Jane McKnight. Ever since the Carnegie endowment and the organization of the Lawrence Free Public Library, Mrs. Beatty has been the librarian in charge, and she is largely responsible for its development into a modern and highly efficient educational institutions. She took charge of the city library when it was managed on the subscription plan with about 350 patrons; facilities for service have been increased many times in the new library, and there are now more than 5,000 ticket holders. Even this does not express the extent of development that has taken place during her administration, for the library in its relationship to the public schools, the university, the various study clubs and the public in general, exerts an influence that is not to be measured by statistics. This, Mrs. Beatty regards as her life work, and she herself takes more pride in the high status that the library has attained than in any other achievement of her life, except in being the mother of Jerome Beatty. Her wisdom in library matters is recognized among librarians, and she has always stood high in the councils of the State Library Association, and has served as its secretary for several years, and as its president. ----------- History of Gloucester, Salem & Cumberland NJ 183 pg. 211 Township of East Greenwich In October of 1856 the Rev. Archibald Beatty came. His rectorship lasted only about three years, but they were fruitful in good work, and a goodly number of useful members were gathered into the church. He afterwards became a very prominent clergyman in Kansas, growing in usefulness and distinction with the growth of the young diocese......

Donna L-3 SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS (San Antonio, TX) August 22, 1893 MURDERED BY A JEALOUS LOVER SHOOTS HIS RIVAL, HIS sWEETHEART AND THEN HIMSELF Waylaid Returning From Church and the Dead Bodies Found on the Road-She Spurned His Love Palo Pinto, Tex., Aug. 21-(Special) A terrible tradgedy occurred in the village at a bend of the Brazos river, five miles southeast of Palo Pinto yesterday evening about 10 o'clock. The particulars as given by Dr. D. B. Warren, just from the scene, are these: Edward Nall had been paying his respects to Miss Ida Beatty, a young lady 17 years old, the daughter of James Beatty, a respectable citizen of this county. He and the young lady were on very friendly terms and he fell in love with her. She was not so serious about the matter as he, and after weighing the matter of a marriage seriously she backed out and discarded Nall's attention in a measure. He became jealous and went into a spell of lunacy over the matter and made up his mind to end the matter by taking her life as well as his own. A young man by the name of James W. Bly was paying some attention to Miss Beatty and had accompanied her out a few times. Last evening he went with the young lady to church at Pleasant Valley. Everything was a round of pleasantness and no thought of the terrible ending was on the mind of anyone. Ed Nall appeared at the church and seemed to keep aloof from everyone and appeared to be morose. Church over, the congregation dispersed and Miss Beatty and Mr. Bly had gone about four miles on their road home, traveling south from the church. At the south side of D. L. Cunningham's farm Nall appeared with a Winchester gun in his hand. He shot J. W. Bly through the heart, killing him instantly. When he shot Bly Miss Beatty's horse became frightened and broke away. Nall followed overtaking her about 400 yards from where Bly was shot. Both leaped from their horses. She evidently tried to evade him as the tracks on the ground showed. He struck her with the gun, breaking her skull, when she was heard to scream. Then he shot her through the head and turned the gun and shot himself, blowing the top of his head off. J. M. Bly, father of the young man, and a sister of the young lady, were riding about 100 yards ahead of the murdered couple and hearing the gun turned back reaching young Bly's dead body about the time Nall shot the girl and himself. It was sometime before the other two bodies were found. --------------------------------- NEW HOPE CEMETERY-Palo Pinto co., TX New Hope Cemetery is northeast of the Lone Camp community. S. Beaty Built http://www.rootsweb.com/~txpalopi/oddsnends/1857-1957news/beaty.htm Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Beaty landed in Palo Pinto County in 1884, stopping at Santo where they were met at the train by Zeke Beaty who had come as a young man to the country. They went, soon, to the New Hope community where Zeke and his family lived and later moved on to the mouth of Boggy Creek. There they settled in a double log cabin for a time sharing the cabin with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Finch until springtime when they built a log cabin with a lean-to for their new home. Both Mr. and Mrs. Beaty were natives of Atlanta, Ga., and were married in 1879. Mr. Beaty owned and operated a saw mill in the small town of Alpine, Ga., where the couple settled for a time. Doctors advised a change of climate for Mr. Beaty and they decided to move to Texas. By this time, they had two children, a daughter, Dora, and a son, Tom, and they left by immigrant train bound for the west. A brother, Jim Beaty, and his family were also on the train and the group assembled at Menloe, leaving there Dec. 8, 1884. Dora, the 4-year-old daughter of the A. S. Beatys, now Mrs. Lewis Rogers, remembers the trip and especially the crossing of the Mississippi River. It was flood time and the train was over water for about 5 miles and the train had to be divided and taken over in sections, thereby delaying all the passengers. Crude lanterns furnished the only light and they were carried by overseers. She remembers the singing of the Negroes as they progressed and remembered it as a terrifying experience. They landed in Santo 5 days after they left home.A sage suggestion was made by Mrs. Rogers in relating the story when she said they spent the first few years trying to learn the ways of Texas and "to learn about Texas weather, which she is sure they never did". The drought of 1886-87 followed their arrival by a few years and they thought they were going to starve to death. Leaving the old state with its plentiful crops of fruit and vegetables and springs of cold water, it was hard to haul water from the river. Okra, which grew wild or volunteer, was the only vegetable available and it is strange how many ways could be found to prepare it. Stalks grew on the river and in fence rows. By the end of the drought, only one well was still furnishing water and the men hauled water for drinking, taking certain days of the week in order not to tax the supply to much and the women gathered at the well to wash the family clothes. Mr. Beaty bought two yearlings on his arrival here and they grew into an ox team which he drove to pull the slide that he used about the farm and to haul water. Wild hogs had to be killed for meat as game was scarce and the hogs were vicious, living on acorns and raising their young in the hills and on the river. Mrs. Rogers relates a narrow escape her family had while fishing on the river. They had gone on the slide and set out hooks, when her father came running to the camp and told them to load on to the slide and the ox team, still hitched, was driven on the run to safety. They didn't wait to pick up the camping equipment. They reached safety but Mrs. Rogers states that, with the possible exception of a mountain fire, was her most frightening experience.Going to the mountains, when meat was scarce, the men would dig a hole and fix a trap putting food near for a time until hogs came willingly to the place, then they would spring the trap and quickly kill the hogs needed for a supply of bacon. This was the way hogs were trapped for food in that time.Santo was the nearest town and a doctor had to be gone after when serious illness occurred in a family. Banking was done in the Cunningham Bank in Palo Pinto, the only bank in the county at the time. When ranches were fenced, wire cutting was common and it was several years before fences were safe from cutting.Mr. Beaty died in June of 1923 at the age of 66 and Mrs. Beaty lived to be 91, passing away in 1951.

    2. Donna, This also is L-20. This James (whose daughter was killed) was a brother of my great-grandfather (E.M. 'Zeke' Beaty). Zeke established the New Hope Cemetery on his property. The first person buried there was Jeff Beaty, another of Zeke's brothers. Ida and James Bly are buried side by side in New Hope Cemetery. But, Zeke wouldn't allow Ed Nall to be buried in this cemetery. Les Beaty, L-20

    1. Re: [BP2000] TX Newspaper Death
    2. Donna, Thanks for the post. You may have connected a few dots for us in L-20. If the Robert whose obituary appeared in the San Antonio, TX paper in 1899 is truly the same Robert as appeared in the 1850 census of Gaston Co., NC, then I believe he was a great-grandson of Francis Beaty, L-20, as follows: Francis --> James --> Samuel --> Robert. That Samuel is the one living nearby in the 1850 census. The John (age 74) living next door in the census was a brother of Samuel and uncle of Robert. This Robert fits well in the family group I have for Samuel. I have 9 children with 2 born in 1825 and in 1830. I didn't have Robert listed, but he fits right in (1827). There remains a bit of a mystery. In the Midlothian Cemetery are buried Ben H. Beaty (b. 1888) and Chester A. Beaty (b. 1884). I went back and looked at Guy Beatty's 2004 message and saw the obituary of Ben H. Beaty which stated that he was born in Jasper, Indiana. Since Robert seemingly came from NC to MS to TX, I gotta wonder who this Ben H. Beaty was. Maybe that was an unrelated Beaty lineage who happened to move in to a neighborhood with L-20 Beatys. Hummmmmmmmm. Les Beaty, L-20

    3. Sandy, You are supposed to recieve a copy of your emails to the list. Yes the new system uses BP2000-bounces@rootsweb.com as a return address , it is confusing because it causes the person recieving to think they actually bounced an email instead of just getting thier copy. lots of things about the new system sucks but others are really good.. so we live with it.. I'd suggest to anyone concerned to go to the lists archives and check to see if your email actually made the list, before thinking you bounced an email. 1. Re: [BP2000] testing for a bounce
    2. Sandy, I'm sure Nelda will respond. I too noticed the change in the header of BP2000 messages. Beginning with messages dated 9/20/06, the header said the message was from <<BP2000-bounces@rootsweb.com>> instead of the sender's name. I presumed this had something to do with a change in the way Rootsweb handled messages routed through their lists. If you received your messages back from Rootsweb, you should also be receiving messages posted by others (like this one, and Nelda's). I'm sure Nelda will address that. Les Beaty, L-20

    3. Thanks, Nelda. I meant that I was receiving a copy of any message I sent out to BP2000 as a return to my email box, with the sender of that email not being me, but from the address <BP2000-bounces@rootsweb.com>. It happened three times. I had never seen a posting from rootsweb come back that way. I am familiar with ..-request and.....-list and ....-digest@rootsweb.com as addresses for lists, but never ...-bounces@rootsweb.com! I also was getting no incoming email. In the meantime, I now have a BP posting and two other emails, so I guess things are looking up. I wanted to post the obituary for my father-in-law who passed away last Saturday. I can't seem to make any headway with his L-48, even after sending in a DNA sample. 1. [BP2000] Robert Allen Beaty, Chambers Co AL, L62?
    2. Laurel Baty
    3. I received the following email and asked if I could forward to the list. I believe this is L62--any cousins out there?--Laurel Baty, L252 Laurel, Don't know if your email address is still good, but here goes. Was talking on the internet about the Civil War and it's causes, so I began searching for ancestors that served in that war, and I came across your thread at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BP2000/2004-12/1104078318. The Robert Allen Beaty you speak of would have been my great-grandfather. My maternal grandmother was his daughter, Nannie Beaty Slaughter. As a kid, I visited the old home place at Buffalo, AL on numerous occasions. I didn't know my great-granddad, but I knew well Uncle George (George H. who served in WWI), Uncle Allen (R. Allen), Uncle Alec ( J.A.), and Aunt Sallie because they all lived at "the Beaty Farm." I'm sure the others, W. T. and J.L., are Uncle Willie and Uncle John, but they had married and moved out of the house so my contact with them was not as frequent. Nannie married Wesley Winston Slaughter (date unknown, although I might be able to get it), and they had four daughters and one son. My mother was Sara Allen Slaughter Hadaway. Her sisters were Mary S. Hadaway, Lois S. Burke, and Martha S. McElwee. The son, my Uncle Robert Slaughter, was named for Robert Allen Beaty (father and son, I guess). Thanks for writing that. Glad to know someone else knows about my family. -- Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge; some only gargle. James Hadaway Morgan City, LA http://crimsonpirate.tidefans.com
