I believe there are cemeteries online for Dodge City. I found my Jim Beattie, father, of Charles Beattie and their wives by going to a cemetery, there, online, once (I did knbow this information years earlier when I was in Dodge City, KS visiting my sister who lives in Salina, KS). Jim Beattie was born in NB, Canada and a brother to my grandfather, Peter Randolph Beattie, Jr. He got to Dodge City by being a railroad man. And married there apparently and had one child only, Charles, who had no children. I once saw Charles and have several photos; also photos of Jim and wife and brothers. And his mother of course, Ann (Harnett) Graham; Beattie wife of Peter Randolph Beattie, Sr., etc. This is all in my genealogy for my membership (510) in BP2000. I'm one of those unknown Beattie strains or a NPE Beattie according to the experts. I'm sure this won't help but it is fun for me to remember these things and to share with whomever might get an idea from the information. Don Beattie in Winthrop, ME **************Need a new ride? Hi Christopher, I think DNA testing could definitely help you determine if your lineage is related to L2. Numerous members of L2 have been tested so you may even be able to determine which branch of L2 you come from (I would guess L2F). It is easy to order a DNA test. Just go to the following link and sign up--you can order the kit using a credit card on-line or ask for an invoice to be sent with the kit. https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=L58912&special=False The test is a simple mouth swab and is sent to your home. The cost of the 25 marker test is $148.00. We have a very small scholarship fund for those who are unable to pay for the test--if you need financial assistance you can contact Earl Beaty ecbeaty@comcast.net, Les Beaty lbeaty@higherspeed.net or me laurelbaty@comcast.net Laurel Baty, L252 -----Original Message----- From: bp2000-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bp2000-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Christopher Beatty Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2008 3:55 AM To: bp2000@rootsweb.com Subject: [BP2000] DNA testing Hello, I have been on the Beatty list for some time, but this is my first contribution. Hi farich@mchsi.com, Yes women can be tesgted, but the Beatty project is a Surname project which basically means Y-DNA only because a female changes her surname with each generation. A female tests mtdna which is not a chromosone, but it is inherited by the children from their Mother. A male can not pass it on to his children because it is in the cell of the egg. See: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/facts/faq4.htm for a pictoral explanation. The mtdna is yours, your mom, her mom, her mom backwards through time.... Y-DNA, is the Y sex chromosone and it comes from the father backwards in time .... So you can't test for a Beatty connection. But you could ask to test from a geographic project if you wanted to such as one of the N. Ireland projects, you would have to go look... for one that fit you, some surname projects accept females testing too... Women can only be tested for Mitochondrial DNA, which isn't as useful for genealogy because MitDNA doesn't have the mutation rate of YDNA. It changes very little over the centuries. Mostly, the female line MitDNA tests are most useful for confirming known/suspected family relationships. As I understand it, MitDNA will tell you for example that two women were related through their mothers or mother's mother's mother ad infinitum, but it does not provide any sense of "time." You could easily match another woman but share the common ancestor 4 or five centuries back, or even a couple of millennia. I think men can do MitDNA tests also, which will identify their mother's MitDNA line. Only men can do the more standard YDNA test since only men have a Y chromosome. YDNA mutates more frequently over time so differences in YDNA generally can give a better sense of how recent the relationship was which makes it more useful for general genealogical purposes. Jerry, Robert Batey, Peter Beattie and myself are all an exact YDNA match at 37 markers, but Peter and I parted from him at 67 markers. I do not know how much of an impact any of this is however. Jerry, Here is what the LDS Family History Library Research Outline for North Carolina says about taxation in NC: <<In 1715 North Carolina began collecting taxes for all free males aged 16 or over, and all slaves aged 12 or more. In 1835 the ages were changed to 21 to 45 for free males, and 12 to 50 for slaves. Some early lists name each taxable person, so you may find a listing for a father and his sons. Later lists generally give only the name of the head of a household and the number of additional taxables in the home. Several early tax lists have been indexed the Early American Series described in the "Census" section of this outline.>> So, it appears that someone on the 1771 list could be 16 years of age or older. I would guess the the "FP" might mean "Free Person," but that's just a guess. Les Beaty, L20

Hi-my name is Gail Hegarty and I recently joined the Beatty Project because I am interested in finding out more about my mother's Beatty family.I was given Lineage #527 which doesn't appear to match anyone in the database so far. As far as I know, John Beatty (B. c1836 in Ireland -dont know where)married Ellen Bracken (born.c.1840 in County Offaly, Ireland). I don't know where they married-it could have been in NY because it appears they both came to this country as teenagers. I remember a family story that "the Beattys spent time in Toronto" but there's no one left to ask. They appear in the 1860 US Census in Brooklyn NY with 2 children, George, age 2 (who was my great grandfather) and an infant, John. By 1870, they are still in Brooklyn wth George, age 12, another child James and a different John (born approx 1869). By 1880 the family is still in Brooklyn and now includes Edward, 14 and Mary, age 5.. Later she comes to be known as Mamie. George F. Beatty, my ggrandfather (born May 1859 in Brooklyn) married Katie O'Hara (born c.1860 in County Cavan Ireland). In the 1880 US Census, they are also in Brooklyn with 5 living children: John,16,George A.,15-my grandfather, Mary, Arthur and Eddie. They had a number of children who died in infancy. All these folks are buried in the family plot in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. The plot was purchased by John and his sons John,Jr and George F. in 1892 and the deed has passed back and forth between these two branches of the family. John Jr's descendants include 2 priests, Rev. Vincent Beatty SJ who was President of Loyola University, Baltimore and Rev Frank Beatty a Vincentian, a nun and a number of other children. My mother, Claire Beatty Hegarty ( 1913-1974)was the eldest daughter of George A. Beatty. If anyone has any leads or info that might help me I would truly appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks Armond, Our Robert E. Beaty was born 1789 in TN or VA or Ireland (according three different children in census) and died in 1844 in Red River County, Texas. He is the oldest of L-405 Beaty line and have been unable to find prior to him. His children are all named in his estate records, so no problem there. We have them all fairly well documented to present date. Just do not know his parents. He owned land with a David Beaty in Yazoo County, MS who possibly was a brother. Posted the Joseph S. Beaty line information in case it would help someone else. No relation to my Robert E. Beaty as best I can tell.
