There are many references to Beatties in this book. Here is an excerpt from page 175: "On the break up of the Beattison clan in 1599 many of its name migrated into Kirkcudbright, while others went to different parts of Scotland and England. With these migrations there came modifications of the name Beattison. In Eskdale it changed to Beattie, in other places to Bateson, Baty and other forms. Early in the 20th century there were still residing in Eskdale several descendants of the Beattisons of Dalbeth. One was Thomas Beattie, Esq., laird of Davington. The lordship of Davington was in the possession of the Scotts of the Howplasset branch. About the year 1784, through some dispute about the succession of the Davington estate, it was sold by order of the Court of Session and was purchased by James Beattie, son of John Beattie of Dalbeth, of whom the above Thomas Beattie is a lineal descendant. One of a list of "plegeis" of 28th October, 1578, is "Johnne Batie of Daventoun, in the custody and keeping of David Boiswall of Balmutto." So that this purchase of 1784 brought about a return of the Beatties to Davington after a lapse of 200 years." There is quite a discussion about Beatties going on the Dumfries rootsweb list—for those who are not members of the list but wish to view the messages, here is the link (scroll to the bottom of the list): http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY/2008-05 Notice that Neil Beattie mentions the Book “Langholm as it was.” In one of his messages. I found that Waterstones in the UK sells a copy of “Langholm as it was” for £25 plus shipping (this is the recent reprint of the book). I ordered one—we will see how long it takes to receive it. http://www.waterstones.com/ Laurel Baty, L252

    2. Laurel Baty
    3. Celia Renshaw sent these 2 messages to the Dumfries mailing list and I offered to pass them on to BP2000. Can anyone help? Also she mentions that the search engine on BP2000 is not working--I typed in Baty and got no hits! --Laurel Baty, L252 >From Celia Renshaw: Hi list, I'm back after a break, chasing D & G folk who migrated to north Bucks & other English counties in the 1660-1760 period. They were travelling chapmen, linen drapers and lace merchants, including a batch of MILLAGANs one of whom married into my English NELSON family. That was my starting point but I'm now researching the migration more generally. At the end, I've given a list of the names I've gathered so far in this research and I'm happy to supply more details on request. For now, I'd like to ask if anyone knows anything about BEATYs especially those with forenames Walter and Simon. I have three generations of Walter BEATYs in Newport Pagnell, Bucks and I'd love to know where they originated. >From IGI, Langholm and Eskdalemuir look possibles. The first Walter >BEATY was a lace merchant and a partner in that business with John HAMILTON also of Newport Pagnell whose family was in Sanquhar, but Walter's other family and business links were with Scots who settled in Reading and Cumberland. Walter I's will was written in 1749 and names: William ELLIOTT of Topsham, Devon Nephew Walter BEATY (Walter II) (father not named but probably brother Simon) - Walter II was in Newport Pagnell; married Ann LITTLE, dau of Mr Ninian LITTLE, in Wimborne Minster, Dorset 1755 and had several children, including son Walter (Walter III) Nephew William BEATY, son of brother Simon Brother John Brother William Half-brother James Sister Margaret BRYDEN, nephew John BRYDEN and niece Agnes BRYDEN - it's possible this family was in Bottisham, Cambs Nephew John BEATY, son of brother John & two nieces, John's daus, unnamed Cousin George LITTLE [probably of Reading] Thomas ROWE of Econ? in Devonshire, brewer John & Elizabeth WAUGH, children of recently deceased Matthew of Reading Father William BEATY, still alive in 1749 Trustees/execs: John ROUTLEDGE of Carlisle, formerly of Reading; Thomas WHITE of Reading; Joseph IRVING of Reading Will wits: Thos BASDEN; Jno PHIPPS Can anyone help me with any of the above? Cheers Celia Renshaw in Chesterfield UK Expat D & G names in Bucks & other lace counties 1660-1760: ARTHUR, ATCHISON, BEATY, BELL, BLACKLOCK, BRYAN, BRYDEN, BUCHANAN, CARLILE, CORRIE, CRICHTON, CROSBY, DICKSON, DYMOKE, FROWD/FROUD, GOWAN/McGOWAN), GRIERSON, HAMILTON, HANNEY/HANNAH, HARKNESS, HOLIDAY, IRVING, JARDINE, JOHNSTON(E), LITTLE, MACDOWELL, MAXWELL, MILLAGAN/MILLIGAN, MILLAR, PASLEY, PATTERSON, PERRY, PRESLEY, RENNY, ROUTLEDGE, ROY, STEELE, WAUGH, WELCH, WHITE. I've just started looking through the lineages at the first link you sent me. I've also tried using the search function on the home page but sadly it doesn't seem to be working properly, so I can't quickly see what Walters and Simons are present or look for any LITTLE connections :( Checking the Carlisle/Cumberland lineages, they don't seem to be connected to the ones in Newport Pagnell, but still I have high hopes that somewhere amongst your huge mountain of info there lies some link to the NP family. They do seem to have been firmly BEATY in the spelling of their name, being pretty well off and literate right back to the mid-1700s when I first pick them up. I will be very happy for you to send my info to the BP2000 list and I'm also happy to send you the descendancy I've mapped out so far. It's pretty sketchy, taken mostly from Wills, and I have few baps & burials, no doubt because they were by default "dissenters" in England and early dissenter records before c1780 are hard to locate. I think the name died out in Newport Pagnell with the death of Charlotte BEATY, daughter of Walter III, though BEATY lived on for a while as a middle name in the BULL family of NP. Charlotte, however, having accumulated the family wealth by inheritance, was a major benefactor in Newport, endowing almshouses and a school for dissenters' children amongst other things. Also of course I'll be happy to exchange more info with anyone from the BEATTIE study who thinks they may link with the NP line. Cheers Celia Renshaw in Chesterfield UK

    3. Willie, My father-n-law was with The Fourth Infantry in Attu, Company K I think. He was sent to California first, and then they had their orders changed and he went to Alaska. He wasn't fond of Alaska, though he said it was pretty. But he saw no fighting. We have all of his books, pics and metals. We always loved his stories. My daddy on the other hand, he saw more than he could ever tell. He fought himself in his sleep over it. Till the day he passed he always jumped in his sleep. Bless all their hearts. I love Alaska also. Such peace, and those mountains, wildlife. But Alaska can't replace my love for Alpine and the Tennessee Mountains. Patty ----- Original Message ----- From: "Willie R. Willie Bates Beaty, was drafted into service June 22, 1945 and was discharged December 8, 1945. 3. In honor of Memorial Day I thought I would send the following link: http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=home.asp There is a searchable registry for WWII service men and women-you can submit an ancestor's name-or your own name for inclusion in the registry. Some records have been submitted by the National Archives and ABMC Cemeteries. After the name is confirmed it will be loaded. You may also submit a photo to be included on the registry for a cost of $10.00. There are a lot of Baty, Beattys etc. in the registry (I recently submitted my father's name. My father, Charles Oscar Baty (deceased), joined the Navy at age 16 in February of 1945). Are there any Beatties (all spellings) on the list who served in WWII? Laurel Baty, L252

Would love to know if the trade of "army lace maker" circa 1800 is what it seems to be. ---A
