Hi Alan, reading Y-DNA results is fairly easy. You compare each individual marker to the other person's marker. So if you were looking at marker DYS 393 and Man "A" was DYS393=12 and Man "B" was DYS393=14, these two men would be 2 TWO steps of difference from each other. Steps of difference are accumulative. Normally it is that simple you look and count the differences. But, there are times when it isn't that easy... and you would need to ask advise. It is believed that all men living today descend from one common ancestor. Haplogroup Adam.. from there all haplogroups developed... (remember haplogroups are SNP markers) this took hundreds of thousands of years... A match between two men must start with matching haplogroups; after that you look at your haplotype. (STR markers) That is where you get the steps of differences. Different admins may use a lower or higher number of differences...for a match; but it is about 3-5 depending on which markers are mutated. So if I am (a Man) and I'm say 3 steps of difference from you at 37 markers then we are related with in the time frame of the use of surnames. It could be close timewise or 20 - 30 generations away. Donna, I would be *thrilled* if this works out! Burns vs. Burnside. The only hint I have on this comes from J.F. Cartan's family tree, and he said that Martha's mother's maiden name *may* have been "Burns". And a cousin of mine who did some research also said "Burns" but didn't give any reference. So it may also have been Burnside. I can go there. More problematic is the census. Martha Beatty and John Martin were married in 1821. Martha *should* have been 33 in the 1830 census, but the adult female was listed between 20-29 yrs. Not a biggie on its own. Censi are not known for absolute accuracy or consistency. Next, this John Martin was listed as having 6 children. I have only found records for three. However, they do fit into the age/gender ranges, and there is room in time for there to have been 3 other children. My daughter, who has been doing genealogy much longer than I, says that the record keeping was such that there might have been other children who did not get "attached" to Martha and John bc no one recorded their births and no one asked who their parents were when they got married. I will check with one other person who has done a lot of research on the Ohio Martins and see if he has any information on John-next-to-Joel. I know there was a "Quaker John" Martin in the area, as well. The whole area was thick with Martins, as a matter of fact, and untangling them has been problematic. Armond-- Are you aware of any relationship of your line with L-198? The Beaty family that migrated from Montgomery County, KY, to Bartholomew County, IN, in the 1820's, had a relationship with a McQueen family there, I believe, possibly belonging to the same church. There were several Beaty/McQueen marriages, and the minister who presided over the marriage of my ancestor Joseph Beaty to Elizabeth Owens was a McQueen. Dear Cousins, In the genealogy listed in the email A New Beattie Family Line from Ballykeel, Edengonnell Hillsborough, County Down, North Ireland I note that the birth and death dates for Thomas Beatty match very closely with those of my great, great, great grandfather Thomas Beaty who is listed in a book on the history of Washington County Pennsylvania as having been "born in Ireland". Thomas is the progenitor of BP lineage 044, and we know his yDNA. Also, several of the names of his siblings match names of his children (He had 12). Could we correspond and share more information? Betty and Nelda, I have a number of items that I found in Beattyville, KY back in May, but due to my wife's health problems I have not had any time to organize it. I have been connected to that line (Samuel Beaty) through YDNA testing in the McQueen Family. It appears that either Samuel or his father Henry sired a son of one of the McQueen ladies. I do not know when I will get to look at my gleenings because now my wife has been diagnosed with cancer and an operation will be due pretty soon. Hello Group, Just in the last week or so, I have come in contact with Vivien Ann Beattie Parry that is the daughter of a Robert Beattie Family. My Wife, Donna, and I visited Robert and his wife in North Ireland at their home a number of years ago. At the time we only new that Robert Beattie had a daughter and that was it. Recently Vivien was given some of her deceased Father’s Genealogy Records that included my E-mail address and she very quickly contacted me. Below is part of a very nice and long obit in my newspaper this A.M. NORTH COUNTY TIMES, (Escondido, CA.) obits.nctimes.com for FREDERICK "FRED" PATTERSON, 96 passed away at home Sunday, October 24, 2010. I searched on "Martha" in all the online Beatty info, and came up with two that were born in the right time frame -- both of them b in PA. But the Ohio Census clearly states that she was born in VA. No Marthas in the right time period showed up in Monongalia Co. where the Martins were from...
