    1. Re: [BP2000] BP2000 Digest, Vol 5, Issue 144
    2. Robin Beaty
    3. Hi Donna, I spent some time on your query because I'm a Pennsylvania resident and because I've been researching L2b Beaty roots in Chester County. I think it's odd that I can't find a Shepherdsburg on Penn. maps—or Maryland or West Virginia or Delaware in any of the areas that might have been in PA before 1775, when James Beatty was born. I ran across all the references sent to you yesterday by other researchers. The contemporary mention of the Allen Martin from Shepherdsburg PA. interviewed in Frederick, MD would suggest that the town still exists. I can't find anything close in Washington County, PA. There's a Shepherdstown just south of Harrisburg on Rte. 15, but I don't think it has much history. There's a Shepherdstown West Virginia about 20 miles west of Frederick, MD, near Harper's Ferry. Of course, town and burg are often confused, and there were Beatys in both areas at the time. However, I think it's possible that "Shepherdsburg" is really "Shippensburg"…the latter is an unfamiliar name and people hear it as something more familiar. There are two Allan Martins in Shippensburg. The interviewer in Frederick, who may never have heard of Shippensburg, may have misunderstood what the Pennsylvania visitor said. Another online mention of Shepherdsburg PA refers to a woman born in Mont Alto, PA (about 15-20 miles south of Shippensburg) who went to "Shepherdsburg Teachers College" in the 20th century. I can find no such institution, but Shippensburg State Teachers College is well known and close by. Another online reference is the deposition of a James Fleming, taken much later in life, who enlisted in the Revolutionary War "at Shepardsburg, Pennsylvania…He joined the Army at Valley Forge." Shippensburg is in central PA and Valley Forge in eastern PA, but the rivers and established Indian paths allowed people to move back and forth pretty freely in the 18th c. Finally, and most interestingly, the online "Rebel Boast First at Bethel Last at Appomattox" recounts the progress of a Confederate unit moving northwest into Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. On p. 118, they enter "Shepherdsburg" at dawn after a march beginning at midnight in Chambersburg and moving in a Northwest trajectory toward Carlisle. I feel sure it must have been Shippensburg, which was a well-established town much like the description at the time. The distance between Chambersburg and Shippensburg is 11 miles, which seems about right. I realize that this theory just offers another possibility, but Beatys were thick on the ground in that area and it might help locate your James Beatty. I'm particularly interested in the information that he was English, not Scots, and that his daughter married into a Quaker-educated family. I've been looking at Quaker and Mennonite associations of my L2b family and would appreciate hearing from anyone with pertinent information who made it this far in this email. 2. Robin, I found the following information and with further research it states that John Purdue was born 3 miles from the city of Huntingdon, Huntingdon Co., PA. but cannot find reference to Shepardsburg, PA., again Julie Miller, L.39 John PurduePURDUE, John, philanthropist, born near Shepardsburg, Pennsylvania, S October, 1S01; died in Lafayette, Indiana, 12 September, 1876. In his early youth he emigrated to Ohio with his parents. He received a common-school education, taught for a time, became a dry-goods merchant, settled in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1889, and accumulated a fortune, also engaging in manufacturing. Mr. Purdue was owner of the Lafayette "Journal," and in 1866 was an unsuccessful independent candidate for congress. In 1869 he founded Purdue university in his adopted town, giving $150,000 toward its endowment. Edited Appletons Encyclopedia

    1. [BP2000] Lineage 101 Biography
    2. Donna VanZandt
    3. Does anyone know where Shepherdsburg is? PA or WV? Donna L-3 PORTRAIT and BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM of VERMILION and EDGAR COUNTIES, ILLINOIS -1889 Lineage 101 pg. 798-799 J0HN B. GALWAY was born Oct.31, 1826, in East Bethlehem Township, Washington Co., Pa. His father, James Galway was a native of Chester County, Pa., and was born in the year' 1797. His grandfather, Robert Galway, emigrated to America from the County Monaghan. Ireland, in 1775, tbe year of the breaking out of the Revolutionary War. He landed at Philadelphia, and having no love for British tyranny soon joined tbe patriotic forces. He served in Maxwell's brigade, participating in a number of battles and skirmishes, among which may be mentioned Brandywine, Chadd's Ford and Paoli. At the latter place he received a bayonet Wound in the side, from which he never fully recovered. After the close of the war be visited Ireland and married his second cousin, Elizabeth Galway, with whom he returned to America, and settled in Eastern Pennsylvania. He died in the early part of the present century, at abont sixty years of age. His wife survived him twenty years, and died about the year 1835, at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. She with her husband were members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Robert Galway was a farmer. James Galway whom we have before mentioned, WaS born and reared on a farm. He was educated in the subscription schools, among the Quakers of Chester County. He was a close stndent and a great teacher during his time. James left Chester County when about twenty-five years old, and went to Ohio, where he remained a year or so, when be returned to Pennsylvania and began farming in Washington County. In December, 1825 he married Miss Margaret H. Beatty, daughter of James and Margaret Beatty. Mr. Beatty was born near Shepherdsburg, and his wife in Washington County, Pa. He was of English ancestry, and she of Scotch- Irish. There were born to the parents of our subject, six children: John B., William B., Robert P.,David H.,Joseph, James H., and Margaret. William B. lives just east of the one of whom we write. A sketch of William is given elsewhere in this work; Robert P. died in 1861, leaving a widow and one child; David H., in answer to his country's call, enlisted as a private in Company D. 25th Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant-Major of his regiment, and would, douhtless, have won his way to higher honors, had he not died very suddenly of rheumatism of the heart in December,1862; James H. died when a boy, and Margaret when two years old; Joseph is a bachelor and lives with our subject. John B. Galway married Miss Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of John and Christy Anna Mitchell, Oct. 30, 1851. Mrs. Galway was born in Washington County, Pa., Sept. 1,1828. Her father was a native of New Jersey, and of Irish ancestry. Her mother was a native of the same county as her daughter, and came of German ancestry. Three years after the marriage of our subject and wife, they removed to Illinois and settled in Carroll Township, Vermilion County. A year after this Mr. Galway removed to this county and rented the place now occupied by H. Kendall in Young America Township. In 1861, having by industry, frugality and economy, accumulated some means, he purchased eighty acres of land in section 13, range 13, Young America Township. To this modest beginning he has made additions by purchase, until his present estate numbers 500 acres of well-cultivated and exceedingly fertile land. It is sufficiently high to be well drained, and is one of the most picturesque locations found in the county. Though repeatedly solicited to run for office, Mr. Galway would not consent to accept any but such as connected him with township affairs in which he had a personal interest. He was the first Town Supervisor in 1857, and served six years. He served as Township Treasurer thirteen years, and was Justice of the Peace three years. He is the oldest Republican in Edgar County; was one before the party was formed. When he lived along the National road, which runs through Terre Haute, he used to see gangs of negroes being driven to Missouri to be sold to the slave owners of that State. The sight of these unfortunates-some white to all appearances-firmly fixed him in his anti-slavery principles, and made him a Republican before there was a Republican party in Illinois. He has been an active member of his party, and has frequently served on the County Committee. He is a memher of Burns Lodge No. 292, Knights of Honor, in which he holds the office of Vice-Dictator. He is a member and Elder in the Christian Church. Four children have been born to Mrs. and Mrs. Galway. The oldest, Roxana is the wife of John O. Kizer, a, livery man of Metcalf; they have one child. James H., who farms part of the homestead, married Daisey Kizer, cousin to Roxana's husband; they have four children; Josephine and the fourth child are deceased, the latter dying in infancy. _William B. 1. [BP2000] Heraldry

    3. Hi, Did you know you can create and register a COA in the USA? Go to the American College of Heraldry. A short lession in Heraldry: copied from: http://www.americancollegeofheraldry.org/ While Americans are usually fascinated by the beauty of heraldry, they are rarely familiar with its meaning and traditions and, therefore, often misunderstand and even abuse this rich cultural heritage. They seldom understand that a coat of arms is usually granted, certified, registered or otherwise recognized as belonging to one individual alone, and that only his direct descendants with proven lineage can be recognized as eligible to inherit the arms. Exceptions to this rule are rare. It is highly inappropriate for one to locate the arms of another person sharing the same surname, and to simply adopt and use these arms as one's own. In order to properly claim the right to existing arms, one should approach an office of arms offering genealogical proof of proper kinship, and to receive confirmation of the right to bear the arms and thus to be recognized by the heraldic community as legitimately bearing the arms. The notorious "Coat of arms for the Name of Jones, Smith, or whatever," purchasable by mail order or in one's local shopping mall, represents no more than improper and illegitimate armorial bearings. To buy and bear these commercially produced arms is to claim for oneself a direct kinship which has only the most remote possibility of validity, and is thereby to deny one's own legitimate and rightful line of descent. Such infraction of armorial regulation and custom constitutes a flagrant abuse of arms which no knowledgeable and honorable person would intentionally commit. Sadly, most of the heraldic abuse in this country is done by honest, well-meaning persons. They greatly admire the heraldic tradition, but in their desire to participate in that tradition they inadvertently abuse heraldic arms due to their lack of familiarity with heraldic regulations and customs. While such armorial abuse does not apparently violate state or federal statute in this country at this time, still to usurp the use of another person's coat of arms is highly improper and is a dishonest practice. Such conduct disregards the regulations of all recognized heraldry and violates the rights of the legitimate owners of the arms. ~~~~~ So... Get your own COAs... http://www.americancollegeofheraldry.org/ LINKS Did you know there was even an American College of Arms? http://www.americancollegeofheraldry.org/ http://www.americancollegeofheraldry.org/heraldicbodies.html http://www.americanheraldry.org/ Russian College of Heraldry http://www.armorial.ru/ A link to more http://www.theheraldrysociety.com/links/heraldry.htm English http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/ Q. Do coats of arms belong to surnames? A. No. There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a surname'. Many people of the same surname will often be entitled to completely different coats of arms, and many of that surname will be entitled to no coat of arms. Coats of arms belong to individuals. For any person to have a right to a coat of arms they must either have had it granted to them or be descended in the legitimate male line from a person to whom arms were granted or confirmed in the past. ~~~ Q. Can the College of Arms tell me what my clan badge is? A. No. The first point to note is that the apparently quite widespread, but new, belief that everyone has a clan, and can wear some specific tartan or display a clan badge, is quite erroneous. Only those of Scottish descent can be associated with a clan in any way. The clan system is an entirely Scottish phenomenon, and consists of a few groups of families, centred on old and historically prominent families, with other associated families (some of the same name as the principal lineage, but many not). To count as a clan, with a chief, these groups need to be recognized as such by the chief Scottish herald, the Lord Lyon King of Arms. This leads on to the second point, which is that it is Lord Lyon, and not the English College of Arms, who has authority and responsibility over matters relating to clans. ~~~ Hope at least some of you were interested in this... 3. Adhering to these standards will require people of honor. As you may know, a law was recently passed making it illegal to claim military medals to which you were not entitled. The most tragic example of this was Admiral Boorda, Chief of Staff US Navy, who committed suicide when he was about to be outed for some minor medal which he may or may not have been entitled. Shortly after the military medal law was passed, a court ruled it unconstitutional as it violates a person right to freedom of speech or expression. In the USA, this 1st amendment right would also apply to COA, Clan/Sept badges, tartans, ad nausea.
