    2. Hi Steve, It will be free to everyone through the National Archives. The law prohibits its release until 2 April 2012. I am sure Ancestry will index it and place it online once it is released. In the meantime you could try and figure out exactly where your ancestors were living in 1940--there are instructions on preparing for the release of the 1940 cenus on: http://www.archives.gov/research/census/1940/start-research.html SteveMorse.org also gives pointers on finding enumeration districts: http://stevemorse.org/census/intro.html   T he National Archives server will probably crash on the day the 1940 census is released! 3. I clicked on the URL and found the 1913 census to be excellent. I copied it and pasted it in my PRINT SHOP. I cropped it and printed it out . A good alternative to ancestry.com. However, I could not figure out how to access other years. Also, the 1940 census should have been released in 1910, but I have yet to see it. I don't know when enumerators started being paid by the hour but in the 1800s they were paid by the household. So, they would take the information from anyone that was there including children. If they found no one home they would ask the neighbors if there were any. The people listed, might even be listed by nicknames instead of christian names. Spellings were horrid, there were no rules for spelling until after the first encylopedia in the middle to late 1800s. When using a census for documentation you should try for additional secondary documentation. Such as Tax records, church records.. sometime in the latter 1800s the federal government required the states to start keeping birth and death records. Some states did not comply untill the begining of the 1900s. The federal census are not the only census, there were state and agruicultural census too. So, don't be upset when you find errors in the federal census. Also transcription errors - LOL I think Ancestry.com has outsourced the transcription of the census records... Some of the Spelling errors are actually funny if you weren't desperatly looking for the person. When ever you can, view the actual census document... This error needs correction... In the Beaty Lineage Chart L2C, it shows John J.'s death as 1868, 3 years before Pocahontas' death and before both the 1870 and 1880 census where he is recorded. 1. [BP2000] Census - Good documentation or not
    2. Nelda Percival
    3. Linda, The census is notorious for its errors. You will need to contact Mike Allen so he can correct the data Nelda Nelda L. 3. my copy shows he died "after 3 March 1868"(father's death-probably mentioned in his estate as alive) sometimes "after" shows up on outline report and sometimes it doesn't-depending on the age of the FTW you are using I suspect. Wonder if he remarried or wife was ill and living with parents in 1850. Donna L-3 father's will: Vol. 2 1862-1895 John Beaty pg. 5 In the name of God, Amen, I, John Beaty of the county of Chariton and state of Missouri being of sound mind and having a disposing memory do make and constitute and appoint as my lawful executor William R. 3. Hi, Do remember, that any male descendant of a common ancestor may Y-DNA test... HUH? I'm trying too point out it does not need to be your first cousin to Y-DNA test. In fact , if you have an older and a younger male relatives it is better to test the older person, (person closest to the common ancestor). If you go look at the chart of who tested and who did not... We have way to many lines that are not tested. You can always order the kit, then pay for it in installments.. No they won't process it till paid for but.. you will have the DNA at FTNDA! There should be some Sales comming up as they usually offer sales on some of the holidays. nelda Nelda L. 3. Faith, A Gedcom.file is created by using genealogy software. I have well over 45,000 individuals in my data. If I did not use a software program I'd never keep up with them all. Some people don't use genealogy software, Personally I think it is a must. Post your questions when ever you feel like it there is no rush, Lots of people set back and just read the emails, answer a few and never post questions themselves. A mailing list gives you the freedom to use it how ever you want to. Thank you Faith, but others here on this list do a heck of a lot more work then I do... WELCOME TO THE LIST! nelda Nelda L.
