There is a new spelling "Boddie" in this county, I am not sure if it is a variation of Beaty or not. The other name that appears in this County is Bate. There are many references in the WPA Will abstracts Book to Elijah Boddie--too many for me to copy! He appears as a witness in many wills and as an executor in many wills. The WPA Minute Books available at the DAR Library for 1802-1803 and 1787 -91 were unindexed so I did not search them. There were no appearances of any Beaty in the indexed 1787 -1805 Minute Book. There were no Beatys in the WPA 1793-1805 Deed Abstract Book. In the 1806 -1897 Deed Abstract Book H. Batte was a witness 22 Aug 1814 to a deed for William Bledsoe. Also, Hum Bate and Elizabeth P. Bate were witnesses to a deed of Frances Youree to Wm Youree on 12 Oct. 1811. >From "Sumner County, Tennessee Will Abstracts 1788 -1882" by Shirley Wilson, CG, 1987: Page 13 Boddie, Elijah, 26 Aug 1851; Oct 1851 --Daughters Elizabeth and her husband William R. I decided to add the following to my summary of Bledsoe County: Liz Williams (L252) discovered a series of Deeds available in Bledsoe County concerning L173. In the earlier 3 Deeds, October 8, 1852, pp 202-207 James Stephens and his wife Isabella H. Beaty sell their claim to the land that John M. Beaty, who died intestate, owned in Rhea and Bledsoe County (about 1000 acres) to Margaret E. and John Swofford. In one deed it states Whereas John M. Beaty now deceased, owned at his death about 1000 acres of land lying or being on the Cumberland Mountain in Bledsoe and Rhea Counties, held by grant from the State of Tennessee, and died intestate without issue, leaving the said Isabell H. Stephens and Margaret E. Swafford, formerly Margaret E. Beaty, his only heirs at law .Also at this time the Stephens sold to the Swaffords some land that they inherited from Edmond (Edwin?) Beaty: James Stephens and his wife Isabella H. Stephens, formerly Isabella H. Beaty, whereas Edmond Beaty now accounts owned at his death about two hundred acres of land more or less lying in the County of Bledsoe . In the description of the boundaries of the land there is a statement which on Hugh Baty now lives The following deed is one I recently found and decided to transcribe. This land is sold over 10 years after the Stephens left Bledsoe County for Fannin County, Texas. It looks like they came back to Bledsoe in 1868 and sold the land. The census data suggest that Hugh Beaty died between 1850 and 1860. We have been unable to locate any land transaction that mentions his death or the death of his wife. Bledsoe County Deed Book P page 407, 408 Know all men by these presents that we James Stephens and Isabella Stephens of the County of Fannin and State of Texas in consideration of the sum of ten hundred and forty dollars to us in hand paid by John M. Swafford and his wife Margaret Swafford have and by these presents do hereby bargain sell and convey unto the said John M. and Margaret Swafford their heirs and assigns forever one moiety or half of an undivided tract of land lying in the 4th Civil District of Bledsoe County Tennessee being the same owned by Edwin W. Bounded and described as followsto witBeginning at a large crooked Ash marked PL on the North west side of a ? thence north 20 degrees East 145 poles to a dense mulberry an Elm and Ash. Thence South 50 degrees East crossing the Mill branch 119 poles to a small chestnut oak near a small branch marked P.L. seven poles south west of said branch. >From Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists transcribed and Indexed by Byron Sistler, Sistler and Associates, 1994 Introduction: Research in Tennessee for the period prior to 1830 poses some difficult problems because no complete census schedules for the state exist prior to that date. The 1800 census schedules were entirely lost or destroyed, and for 1810 only Rutherford Co. has been saved. The 1820 lists for almost all the eastern counties are missing. [Not all tax lists for every year of every county are in this bookgenerally data less than five years apart is not included (i.e. White County 1825 is included but not 1826-1830) I have not included the various spellings of Bailey in this list (Baily and Baley).] Baity, John-- Blount County 1805 Baity, Samuel-- Blount County 1805 Batey, Thomas-- Giles 1812 Batey, William-- Giles 1812 Bayd, Henry-- Washington 1819 Bayty, John S.-- Giles 1819 Beady, John-- Grainger 1799 Beatty, Cypens-- White 1825 Beatty, James-- Sullivan 1796 Beaty, Andrew-- Sullivan 1796 Beaty, Arthur-- Maury 1816 Beaty, David-- Davidson 1805, Davidson 1811, Montgomery 1798, Williamson 1801 Beaty, Hugh-- Roane 1805 Beaty, James-- Sullivan 1797, Maury 1816 Beaty, John-- Maury 1816, Montgomery 1798, Grainger 1799, Blount 1801, Blount 1800, Williamson 1810 Beaty, Samel-- Blount 1801 Beaty, William-- Davidson 1811 Laurel Baty, L252

This is L173 >From "Bledsoe County, Tennessee A History" by Elizabeth Patham Robnett, Mountian Press, 2002. Page 45 "In 1850 the population of the county had increased to 5, 959. Only five people living in the county were foreign born. Those being Hugh Beaty and wife Jane M. Beaty, Mary Greer, wife of Wetherston S. Greer, and James McIintyre, all natives of Ireland, and William Baker who was born in England." [Hugh Beaty and wife, Jane Miller Beaty are L173; their known children are John M. Beaty, Edwin Beaty, Isabella Beaty Stephens, and Margaret E. Beaty Swafford, census data below implies that they had additional female offspring] Page 65 Chairman of County Court, County Judge or County executive JOHN M. BEATTY [L173] page 102 "One of the oldest letters to be preserved was dated February 23, 1827. This letter from J. M. Beatty, was sent from Jasper and gives some interesting sights into life in early Bledsoe County. The letter, a two page one, was to Nancy and Isabella Beatty who were living at the Beatty home in Beatty's Cove. A double sheet of paper was used, it being folded without an envelope. It reads: "Dear Sisters Nancy and Isabella: In order to let you know I have not forgotten you entirely I take part of the time appropriated for sleep and rest to scribble a few lines to you as it respect some very necessary, and essential things which you should observe. There is one thing above the rest which I would recommend you to do that is to pay strict attention to whatever mother may request you to do obey her on all occasions and in time you will know the benefit arising from it not withstanding you may think the task hard. But let me assure you dear sisters that it is one of the most essential things to give a good and creditable standing among decent and respected people are ever watchful of such things and will respect their parents. I would recommend reading as a very necessary employment of night and leisure hours.....I am Dear Sisters your Affectional Brother J. M.
