    2. Laurel Baty
    3. War of 1812 Pension Card Abstracts [M313, Index to War of 1812 Pension Application Files, 102 rolls.] These cards are on microfilm, I have abstracted the soldiers name, date of enlistment, unit, widow's maiden name, date of marriage if given and residence information of soldier and widow. There are also a series of numbers on the cards—SO (soldiers original, used when the soldier was an invalid), SC (soldier's certificate), WO (widow's original), WC (widow's certificate) and Bounty Land that I can provide to anyone who is interested in a particular person. The actual pension files have not been microfilmed and must be requested from the National Archives—if you are visiting the Archives you can obtain a researcher card and request a maximum of 4 files per document pull (these are at set times throughout the day) or 24 files per day (a mistake in this case, because I couldn't copy 24 files by myself, I think I managed to copy 15)! You then view the files in a special room (second floor) into which you may bring only a pencil and paper. You may Xerox the files with approval of an Archivist—a large document scanner is also available. You can also sign up to use a bulk copier for one hour which I recommend as the files are quite large, the average length probably about 40 pages (it can be hard to copy a long file on the copiers in the research room on a crowded day and you are supposed to limit your time to 3 minutes when others are waiting). I am going to put an * in front of names that did not appear on the first list I sent out. These are all of the alternate spellings that I could find. *Batey, Thomas (or Beatie), Capt. 1. [BP2000] Major DNA Project Success!!
    2. Les Beaty
    3. All, In June, I reported to you a personal success story about getting an exact 25-marker haplotype match with a distant cousin which validated the haplotype of our Great-Great-Grandfather (Thomas Ross Beaty- 1820-1888). We believe that he descended from L-20 Francis Beaty who died in NC in 1773. In September, we reported another success. A descendant of another of L-20 Francis Beaty's sons (different line from Thomas Ross Beaty) got the results of his DNA sample. His haplotype is an exact match to mine (and my other cousin and Thomas Ross Beaty). With that, we believe we have validated the haplotype of L-20 Francis Beaty, the Surveyor, who died in NC 230 years ago. (I thought I reported this on BP-2000, but I can't find the message so I guess I neglected to do so.) Now, we have another major success to report. In 2000, Tim Daugherty wrote a thoughtful and well-reasoned paper laying out a rationale for proposing that James Beaty who died in Cumberland Co., PA in 1777 was related to Francis Beaty, the Surveyor, who died in Mecklenburg Co., NC in 1773. This James Beaty lineage is L-98. Recently, a male descendant in L-98 submitted a DNA sample in our DNA Project. The results are in. And, his haplotype is AN EXACT 25-MARKER MATCH to Francis Beaty, the Surveyor, Thomas Ross Beaty, my two cousins, and me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What does this mean? It means that the James Beaty of L-98 was at least a close cousin (1st cousin?) or a brother of Francis Beaty, the Surveyor. That is, L-98 and L-20 are very closely related. The next step is to obtain a DNA sample from L-56. This is John Beaty, the NC Pioneer, who is generally believed to have been a brother of L-20 Francis Beaty. If we are correct, this sample should be an exact 25-marker match also. Folks, if you do not yet understand the value of these DNA tests to your genealogical research, I urge you to review your thinking and visit our project website at www.BeattyDNA.org. We are making serious headway in several lineages, and that is with only 29 samples. Think what we could learn with 200 samples! Les Beaty L-20B

    3. Hi Jayne, Bachman is her maiden name--I didn't bother to type in the Beatty, sorry for the confusion. The widows name appears twice on the card--first as Margaretta Beatty and then in a different section, Maiden name of Widow, her name is given as Margaretta Bachman. This is true for all of the cards. The dates do refer to Residence of widow or residence of soldier, probably extracted from letters or Bounty Land Papers or the pension applications themselves. Laurel Jayne wrote: > Thank you. > > Another thought...do we have a roster of his division?
