John D. Beattie applied for pension May 23, 1888 a resident of Starkville, Oktibbeha county, Mississippi. He states that he is 61 and was born at Leesburg VA on the 7th of April, 1827 . He was a sergeant in the Company of Morgan B. Cook in the 2nd regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Infantry commanded by Col. Wm. T. Haskell in the War with Mexico and enlisted at Memphis TN in June 1846 and was discharged at New Orleans in June 1847. He states he is dependent on his son Emmitt(?, hard to read) M. Beattie of Memphis for his support. He states that his wife's maiden name was Susan E. Parker and they married at Memphis, TN on April 10, 1856 and his wife is still living. R. M. Beattie of Memphis, Tennessee is an attorney for John D. Beattie. J. L. Martin, undertaker, states that he "buried the late John D. Beattie, a citizen of Starkville, November 19th, 1900, he having died November 17th, 1900." R. A. Parker "I am sixty four years of age and have resided in said city of Memphis nearly all of my life. I am brother of Susan E. Beattie...This marriage on April 10th, 1856, to said John D. Beattie, is also shown in the family record in my possession, at my residence, 92 Poplar Street, this city, where it can be inspected at any time...I also have hanging upon my wall in my said residence a lithographed copy of our family tree, the original having been drawn by my late mother's sister, the late Mrs. M. J. Stovall, of Memphis, March 18th, 1861...." In 1900, Susan E. Beattie states that she is 67 years of age and was born on the 19th of September in Sommerville, Tennessee. Robt M. Beattie and Fannie M. Beattie are witnesses on this document. N. J. Le Master, of Memphis, TN, states: "I was intimately acquainted with the late John D. Beattie from the time I was about ten years of age. In his youth and young manhood, he spent a good deal of time at my parents home; in fact, his mother died at our home in 1861....I am also acquainted with his widow, Susan Elizabeth Beattie...I was present at their marriage in April 1856, at her father's homestead, named "Magnolia." on Rayburn Avenue...The said John D. Beattie came to Memphis from Virginia when he was a small boy.." In a deposition by G. E. Crutchfield, May 1901: "Susannah E. Beattie the claimant commonly called in our family Bettie is my sister...I have a record of this marriage in our famliy Bible..said John D. Beattie was about 32 years old when he married my said sister..my said sister was born on Sept. 19, 1833. This record is also taken from our family bible now in my possession..." An original marriage certificate (lovely) is in this file. H. A. Beattie, of Starkville, Miss. writes several letters for "my mother." Susan E. Beattie died 1/27/1918 and her last pension check for $60.00 was returned. This file is 53 pages long. Laurel Baty, L252

I thought I would add that to participate in the BP2000 DNA test you must be male and your father must have been a Beaty male--there is a great discussion of the test at: http://www.beattydna.org/Why.html I thought I would also add that the test is sent to your home and is a simple scraping of the check--sort of like brushing your teeth. In looking at microfilm of Pension Ledger books for the last pension payment of John Beatty (Seminole War) I found the record of Joseph Beatty of KY --the ledger shows his date of death as Sept 8, 1829. If anyone is interested in this man I may be able to obtain the record of the last pension Payment at the Archives--these sometimes show the next of kin who received the last payment. Let me know if anyone is interested (this pension is posted at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/rev_war_joseph_beatty.htm) I do not know Joseph's lineage. Laurel Baty, L252
In honor of John S. Baty's birthday (December 19, 1825, L252) I would like to offer 2 free DNA 12 marker tests to two Beaty males. I would like one of the tests to be for a male in lineage 162 (a large TN lineage that has not submitted DNA for the BP2000 DNA project) and one for the first Beaty male to email me from any lineage that has not submitted DNA to the project. In the event that L162 does not respond I will choose the second Beaty male to email me. (PS--spelling is not relevant--you are all Batys to me!) My brother recently submitted DNA to the project and was found to have an uncommon mutation in the 12 marker test. It is easy to upgrade to the 25 marker test (you won't have to resubmit your sample) if you decide to at a later date. A table of results is available at: http://www.beattydna.org/Discussion.html You can read John's biography at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/john_s_baty.htm Happy Birthday John S. Baty--I hope you find a father one day! Laurel Baty, L252
I just found another section of this application that I missed the first time --another 19 pages making the length of the application 63 pages. In 1887 John Beattie applies for pension from Cuyahoga, Ohio stating :"the reason this application is made from Cleveland Ohio, instead of my home in Bay St. Louis Hancock Co. Miss is because on my way to a visit to my sister in Chicago and met my old comrade Jacob Weidenkopf, Cleveland, Ohio (who gives deposition)." His first wife Elizabeth James is still living at this time. There is a document detailing his land holdings in 1893--he owns land in Chicago, Illinois (3 lots) and Charlevoix, Michigan. I have a Charles E BEATY in my line that COULD possibly be the same as Jay's Charles Edwin (see below). However I have NO DOCUMENTATION on my Charles E. However, there are a few coincidences. See my Beaty line at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gtusa/beatty.htm Again, I have no information on Charles E other than what is posted, and I have no other documentation, so this is just a clue. Charles is a common name in the Beaty/Beatty lines, so this could be a dead end, BUT, it could also be a hint. At this point I have no idea, but it's a shot... I'm Jay Wendell Beatty, born 1930 in Middletown, Ohio. My father was Charles Edwin Beatty, Born in 1907 in Franklin, Ohio. His father was Benjamin Franklin Beatty also born in Franklin, Ohio. My great grandfather was Charles Edwin Beatty also. I do not know where he was born nor where he came from. He died in 1936 at approximate age 75 so assume his birthdate was 1860/1. I believe he resided for a period of time in Ankeny, Iowa, but am not certain. He had two brothers who were traveling ministers, never married and left no family. His daughter, my great Aunt Ethel, married William Eisenminger of Franklin, Ohio. They had no children. I have 2 brothers, Gale Edwin and David Gerald Beatty and a sister, Judith Ann Karshner, all of Middletown and Lebanon, Ohio. Attempting to trace my family has been a great disappointment to me. I cannot get further back into history than Great Grandfather C.E.Beatty. Have you run across any of these names in your search. If so, I would be delighted to hear from you. Best regards, Jay W. Beatty
