Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON BEATTY: Received a good early education in the Latin-school of John Downey and learned the watch and clock-making with his brother-in-law Samuel Hill. (Egle, 1886). UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI - McCAIN LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES Manuscript Collection Collection Title: Beatty (George) and Heimer (John) Ledger Collection Number: M116 Dates: 1841-1848 Volume: 1 Ledger (.25 cu. ft.) Provenance: Unknown. Copyright: This collection may be protected from unauthorized copying by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code.) Biographical/Historical Sketch: George Beatty was the youngest son born to James and Alice Irwin Beatty in the townland of Bally-Keel Ednagonnell, county Down, Ireland, in 1781. In the summer of 1784 James Beatty brought his family to America where they settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. James Beatty purchased a number of lots in Harrisburg and became quite prominent. He held several official positions under the borough charter. His property remained in the possession of his descendents following his death in 1794. George Beatty received a regular school education, and later worked with his brother-in-law, Samuel Hill, from whom he learned clock and watch making. Referred to as an "ingenious mechanician," George is remembered for his clocks of "peculiar and rare invention." It was presumably this business in which he was active for more than 40 years. In his early years, George served a term as director of the poor with responsibility for assessing taxes for the welfare of the poor and securing housing and employment for them, and also held the position of county auditor. For several years he served as a member of the town council; in that capacity he was a leader in efforts to supply Harrisburg with water. On March 10, 1862, at age 81, Beatty died in Harrisburg and was buried in the Harrisburg Cemetery. John Heimer was the co-partner, in a brickmaking business, of George Beatty. Heimer was responsible for digging clay, repairing the kiln and shed floors, making brick, and keeping the yards. Beatty furnished the yards and machinery. Beatty also received all the cash but gave Heimer part of the profits. No other biographical information on John Heimer could be located. Scope and Content: This collection consists of one ledger of a brickmaking firm. The ledger includes entries primarily dated 1841-1848; however, there are brief entries for 1827, 1850, and 1851. The notes of 1850 and 1851 are records of accounts settled. The ledger includes entries made before and during the formation of a partnership between George Beatty, the original owner, and John Heimer. The formation of the partnership is dated March 13, 1843 and continued to 1848(?). Pages 100-104 contain an article of agreement between Beatty and Heimer. Following the agreements are records of the distribution of profits, 1841-1848. Of interest in the ledger are the names of structures for which bricks were ordered; some of these include Harrisburg Bank, Presbyterian Graveyard, German Reformed Church, Courthouse, and Washington Hose Company. The ledger also records brick orders paid by the Town Council, Borough-Treasurer and the Treasurer of the Harrisburg Water works. These bricks were ordered for the pavement of streets, and the construction of canals, gutters, and sewers. Ledger entries record the manner of payment of accounts, whether by cash, check, or a trade of goods and services. This may be of interest to someone studying the economy of the mid-19th century. Furthermore, by examining the number of paved streets and the canals mentioned, one may acquire an idea of Pennsylvania's efficiency in internal improvements. This Milburn is L-121 and this Milburn marries a Mary Brown so it is the wrong Milburn. Received this info on L-121 when I posted. Donna L-3 Hi Donna, Caught your correspondence on Milburn Beaty, and thought I'd "pop in." The parents of the Scott county Milburn were Rev. David W. & Sarah Elizabeth (Ross) Beaty. About 1867 he married Mary Susan "Babe" Brown, daughter of Thomas & Mary (Bull) Brown. They had three children before Milburn disappeared and deserted his family in 1876. Babe never remarried, and nothing was ever heard of Milburn by his family again. An outline of his immediate descendants in Scott county is pasted in below for your info. Unless Milburn was leading a double life and commuting between Texas and Arkansas (right!), he won't have been the one who married Mary Love. Milburn is an uncommon enough name that I would suspect that the two men were possible cousins, but I have no further info on David's family connections. Hope this helps some. Bryce W. I did not copy this entire file--it is very long and Robert eventually died at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver. Most of the records that I did not copy concern his medical history at the hospital. In 1879 Robert Batey is living in Sanyamon County, Illinois and he is 34 years old. He states that he was enrolled in Nov. 1872 in company B of the 6th regiment of Cavalry commanded by Captain Whitesides and was discharged at Camp Hauchuca in Nov of 1877. He states he was "taken violently ill with fever and palpitation of the heart" on an expedition from Fort Bowie and has suffered ever since. Since the service he has resided at Springfield Illinois and is totally disabled. Iin 1917 Robert states that he does not know the place of his birth. He states that at the time of his service he was 5 feet 5 or 6 inches with light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He has lived in different places in Denver since coming here in 1880 from Springfield, Illinois. He states that he was born April 27, 1844. Before he enlisted he lived in the Southern part of Ohio. He states he was married to Mary Cummins in 1882 and does not remember the date or month. He was divorced from her in Feb. 1892. His present wife, Marcelline M. Beatty, whom he married Oct. 19, 1892 in Denver, Colorado, was previously married to Robert L. Moss in Chicago Dec. 18, 1865 and he died May 1875. Marcelline died Jan. 6, 1914. He never had any children. In 1920 Robert files a claim for pension stating he is 90 years old and was born at Fayette County, Ohio. He states he was married to Marcelline M. Mars October 19, 1892 and that she died Jan 6, 1914 at Denver. Robert Batey died at Fitzsimons General Hospital 8/1/1934 and was buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Colorado on 8/3/1934. A death certificate is included in the file which states his place of birth as Fairheart County, Ohio and gives his father's name as Samuel Batey. His mother's name is unknown. Laurel Baty, L252

In 1887 James Beaty of Anoka, Anoka county, Minnesota states that he is the same James Beaty who was a Private in Capt. George Cook's Company of the 4th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers commanded by John S. Williams. He enlisted at Louisville, Kentucky on or about the 5th of November 1847 and was discharged at Louisville in July of 1848. He states he is 65 and was born in Washington, PA on March 30, 1821. He states he is dependent on his two sons living in Anoka, Minn. His wife's name is Diantha Shumway and he was married at Orange, Ohio on June 15, 1856 and his wife is still living (on another form he states that his marriage certificate was destroyed by fire). Since his discharge he has lived at Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio and California until 1856 since which time I have lived in Minnesota except while in the service of the United States in "the War of the Rebellion as a member of the 4th Regt; Minn. Vols." John P. Austin of Anoka, Minn. states that he has known "J. Beatty" for 55 years. he further states "I received from said Beaty a letter dated at Mexico during the time of the Mexican War and while he was in the US Service....Having been personally acquainted with him for 55 years and when first acquainted with said Beaty he was a boy about 10 years of age." In 1891--R. A. Fitch states that he is well acquainted with claimant "John S. Beaty" and "the said John S. Beaty is the identical person who is claiming a Mexican pension uunder the name of James Beaty." In 1891 Judge W. W.Fitch (Judge of the Municipal Court of Anoka) states he has "executed from time to time, claimants vouchers for pension for services in the Mexican war under the name of "James Beaty" claimants true name is John S. Beaty but, through some clerical error or otherwise, his name appears on the Mexican War records as James Beaty...." John S. Beaty states his children as: Alvah Francis born Feb 15, 1860 Arthur O (A?) born October 21, 1868 There is a special Act of Senate and House of Representatives that increases John S. Beaty's pension to $20.00 per month. On June 16, 1910 there is a note "Dropped...Reimb. Chck to A. F. Beaty." This file is 39 pages long. Laurel Baty, L252
In 1899 John Beatty is a resident of Gazelle, Siskiyou County, California and he applies for a Mexican War Pension. He states that he enlisted at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas in October of 1847 and was discharged at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in October 1848. He was a teamster under Maj Gilpin in the MO Vols commanded by General Sterling Price. He states that he is 73 years old and was born March 9, 1826 at Splice Creek, Cole County, Missouri. He married Mary McCracken Sept. 13, 1849 in Oregon City, Holt County, Missouri and she is still living. Since the service he has lived Holt Co., Missouri for 2 years, then moved to Polk Co. Oregon, thence to Lane Co., Oregon and moved to CA 3 years ago. He has 7 living children and 3 deceased; he names only the living: Joseph M. Beatty born Dec. 23, 1852 now living near Gazelle Lou E. Beatty (now Mrs. George Evans) born April 23, 1855, now in Oregon. John C. Beatty, born Sept. 8, 1857, now in Colorado. William L. Beatty, born September 4th 1862 now at Gazelle Mary H. Hollis born Dec. 23, 1864 Wesley Beatty born March 22, 1867 Emily Bernier born Jan. 8, 1870 John Beatty's pension is denied--there seems to be a problem with people who served as teamsters, the pay records are very confusing. John describes his service: "I was a teamster regularly enlisted and hauled provisions from Fort Leavenworth on out to Santa Fe and other Frontiers, and returned with an ambulance hauling sick soldiers. Was in engagements in June 1848 against Indians who were endeavoring to rob the train of ? cattle horses and supplies. This application is 15 pages. Laurel Baty, L252
