I copied two more Rev War Final Pension Payments at the Archives today. They were for Hugh Beaty of Pennsylvania and James Beatty of PA and Ohio. If anyone would like a scan let me know. Does anyone know the lineages of these men? Is there any way we could attach a lineage # to the Pension transcripts that are posted on BP2000? Laurel Baty, L252

This Pension file is 159 pages long. There is so much information in this file that it is hard to do it justice. There are many candid descriptions of David Beattie by neighbors and others that I have chosen not to include in this abstract and note only that if you prefer your ancestors to be paragons of virtue don't request a copy of this file. I am going to start this one with some 1880 Census returns: 1880 Junction, Lane, Oregon page 213D David Beattie married m,w,46 Ireland, Blacksmith, father and mother born in Ireland Ruth wife, f,w,44, Canada, Canada, NY George, son, m,w,16, CA, Ireland, --- Clara Jones stepdau f,w,13, ILL, VA, Can and 1880 West Mahoney, Schuykill, PA, p343B [I think this is David's brother but you will have to read the summary to find out why] Joseph A. He states that he was a Private in Battery L commanded by Captain Hy. B. Judd in the 3rd Regiment of US Artillery in the Washington & Oregon Indian War 1853 & 1856. He enlisted at Potsvill Pa Feb. 7, 1853 for five years and was discharged at Ft. Umqua(?) on May 24, 1858. He states that he was 24 years old when he enlisted, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches, blue eyes, brown hair and fair complexion. He states that he was born in Nova Scotia. He has resided at Junction City, Oregon for 30 years and at CA about 10 years. He married Ruth Johnson on May 1, 1881 and she is still living. On another form dated Oct. 18, 1902 he states that he was born in 1831 in Nova Scotia and that he had lived in Minersville, PA before he enlisted and was a blacksmith. He states he lived in Yreka, CA Junction City Oregon and also Canyonville, Oregon since his discharge. On another form in 1903 "As to the correct way of spelling my name I will say that the correct way and the way I spell it is "David Beattie." While it may be possible I spelled it differently in the service yet the above is correct. This I am willing to make oath to." There is a discharge paper in this file that was given to replace the original which has been lost or destroyed. On a form dated Jan. 17, 1898 from the Adjutant General "David Beatty born in Ireland, aged 22 years occupation a laborer, blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, 5 feet 5 1/2 inches high was enlisted Feby 7/53, at Pottsville, Pa in the General Service USA." There is a death certificate for David Beattie which gives his place of birth as Ireland and his date of death as Sept. 11, 1908. In October of 1908 David's widow, Ruth Beattie, living in Junction City, Oregon, applied for Accrued Pension. She states that she was previously married and her first husband's name was Wm Jones and he is deceased. She states that David Beattie had also been previously married and his first wife's name was Harriet Satent and that she is also deceased. In another form dated Feb. 1909 Ruth Beattie stated that "my first husband William Jones died on 25th September 1875 in Lane County, Oregon...David Beattie's first wife died over forty years ago. He told me near Jacksonvile, Oregon. I do not know the exact date of her death..." There is a certified copy of the marriage of David Beattie to Ruth Jones; married Dec. 25, 1876 in Lane County, Oregon at the house of David Beattie. Wilson T. Lewis and Henrietta D. Eaton state that they attended the funeral of William Jones who died September 22, 1875. Thomas A. Millborn and Jonathan J. Butler state that they knew David Beattie for over forty years and he told them his first wife died in Jacksonville, Jackson County, Oregon. Clerks in both Jackson and Lane Counties state that no death records were kept in their counties. A Special Examiner was assigned to this case to determine if Ruth Beattie was eligible for pension since she was unable to prove the death of her husband's first wife. From this examination: "the claimant..lately removed to Portland, where she is residing at present with her widowed daughter, Mrs. Clara Davis, both of whom are being supported by an unmarried son of Mrs. Davis, about 24 or 25 years of age...." "I am unable to obtain any reliable history of him [David Beattie] at all. The claimant says he had some relatives living in Pennsylvania whom he visited after her marriage to him, which was in 1876. That his mother was still living at that time, and one brother and one sister, but says they afterward heard of the death of his mother and brother, but has not heard of the death of the sister, but does not know what her name was or where she was living, but thinks it was Skuylkill, Pa. She says his brother's name was Joseph Beattie, and that he had quite a family of children, but does not know the name of any of them. She says she never saw any of his relatives, and does not know when or where he was first married, nor to whom, but that he had a son by his first wife, who had died when George was quite small. She says she thinks George was 12 years old on the 4th of the same December she was married to the soldier, which makes her think the first wife had been dead about 10 years when she married him, but says she does not remember that he said where she died...the claimant says the name "Harriet Satent" was given in her application...as the name of soldier's first wife, was the name of her first husband, Jones first wife and the person who wrote it as the name of the soldier's former wife misunderstood her." This is a 5 page document typed on legal size paper that shows how detailed these investigations can be. There is so much here --another marriage and divorce of David Beattie discovered by the investigator..At one point the investigator states "I went to Jacksonville, Or., and spent the greater part of an entire day there making inquiry of all the old settlers, including quite a number who had lived there since 1852..could not find a single person who...had ever known or heard of a David Beattie...I also found and examined the record of burials in the City Cemetery at Jacksonville, the entries beginning in 1853, but find no one by the name of Beattie. I also examined the deed records of Jackson County but there is nothing to show that David Beattie, or any Beattie ever owned any land in that County.---[It goes on from there -- he examines marriage records in every County that falls in a line from David's discharge into Oregon and also into California and can't find a record of the first marriage--he examines the records of 17 counties...] he also states "I have been unable to locate George Beattie, soldier's son by his first wife, who is said to have lived with soldier and claimant until he was about grown, as claimant nor any one else seems to know where he is..She says George and his father never got along well together after George grew up." There is a 10 page examination of poor Ruth. She states "My father's name was James Johnson and my mother's maiden name was Barbara Deane. I was born at Burford Canada, April 6, 1836. I had 6 brothers and 4 sisters. None of them are living now...I have a niece living, Mrs. Ettie Eaton, at Junction City, Or...My parents had moved to Illinois when I was 11..I had five children by Mr. Jones. Two of them are living. Clara Davis...and Solon S. Jones, Wilbur, Douglas Co., Or.... [asked about David Beattie's history, she replies] "He was born in old Ireland, and moved from there to Nova Scotia when he was small, and from there to Pennsylvania...I have heard him speak of Schuylkill and I think he lived there at some time...his brother had quite a large family of children. His name was Joseph Beattie, and they also lived at Schuylkill, Pa., as I understood. I think he was younger than my husband..." [asked about David's son George] "The last I heard he was in Vancouver, Wash., about 6 years ago. As well as I know he was blacksmithing. I heard he was married but whether it is true or not, I could not say. George was born in Yreka, Cal., as I have understood, and it may be that is where Mr. Beattie was married the first time..." A mysterious marriage and subsequent divorce of David Beattie to Martha Logan is documented in this file--Martha is not George's mother. The marriage license was issued Jan. 4, 1876 in Eugene, Oregon. A divorce was granted on April 17, 1876 in Eugene City, Oregon and Martha resumed her maiden name. No children were born of this union. Ruth Beattie died July 14, 1911. Her daughter, Clara Davis, requested reimbursement for Ruth's burial expenses all of which are detailed in the file. Ruth was buried in the "family lot at Junction City, Lane co. Oregon." Laurel Baty, L252
L-73 The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography Vol. 20-pg. 54 Beatty, Troy, Protestant Episcopal bishop was born at Tuscaloosa, Ala., Nov. 12, 1866, son of William Henry and Rebecca (Troy) Beatty. his father, a native of North Carolina, was a physician. The family removed to Mobile, Ala., and later to Chattanooga, Tenn., the son receiving his primary education in private schools of these cities. He then entered the academic department of the University of the South, Sewanee, and also studied for the Episcopal ministry at its theological seminary. Ordained deacon in 1891 and priest in 1892, he was appointed to his first charge in the latter year as rector of Trinity church, Mason, Tenn., and thereafter became successively rector of St. Andrew's Church, Darien, Ga., in 1893; Emmanuel Church, Athens, Ga., in 1897, and of Grace Church, Memphis, Tenn., in 1916. In 1919 he was consecrated bishop coadjutor of Tennessee under Bishop Thomas F. Gailor (q.v.), virtually undertaking the whole charge of the diocese with the election that year of Bishop Gailor as presiding bisop and president of the church's national council, with headquarters in New York. From 1901 he attended as a deputy the triennial general conventions of the church, and also served terms as a member of the standing committees of the dioceses of Georgia and Tennessee. As bishop coadjutor he constantly toured the state to conduct services and in his ministrations exercised a strong influence over his congregations, especially over the young men, a number of whom were drawn to enter the ministry through hearing his stimulating sermons. He was widely known among the Masonic fraternities as grand prelate of the grand encampment of Knights Templar, past Prelate of the Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, past grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias for Georgia, and was a special representative of that state at the golden jubilee of the order held in Washington, D. C., in 1914. the University of Georgia bestowed upon him the honorary degree of D. D. in 1917, and the University of the South conferred the same degree ad eundem in 1921. Bishop Beatty was married Nov. 24, 1892, to Fredrika Priest, daughter of George A. Mayhew, a merchant of New York city, and they had four children: Troy, Charles, Frederika, and Mayhew Beatty. He died in Nashville, Tenn., Spril 23, 1922. 1880-8th Ward, Mobile, Mobile, Alabama Source: FHL Film 1254025 National Archives Film T9-0025 Page 277C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace William H. In September of 1918 Mary Ann Batty, a resident of Toquerville, Washington County, Utah, applied for a pension based on the service of her husband John Batty in the Mexican War. John Batty enlisted at St. George, Utah in August of 1866 as a private in Capt. James Andrus Volunteer cavalry, Utah Territory Militia and was discharged in Sept. of 1866 at St. George, Utah. He served in the campaign against the Black Hawk Indians in Utah. She states her maiden name was Mary Ann Duffin and she was married at Toquerville, Utah on Dec. 31, 1866. She states that John Batty died Aug. 17, 1918 at Panquteh (?) Utah and that they were not divorced nor has she remarried. Anna Laura Anderson and Wm. L. Batty are witnesses on this document. John Batty was a Mormon and a request is sent to Mary Ann Batty for "your statement under oath showing whether you were a plural wife of the soldier, and, if so, the name of each other wife with the present address if living, or if dead, the date and the place where the death occurred." John T. Batty writes a letter concerning the claims of his mother and late father "...I have helped my mother get the affidavits out, as she is old and badly in need. I got Senator King to help me with my father's but it was too late. He died just before we got his final papers in.." A special examiner writes "I have had a transcript made of the Temple Records of the marriage of claimant to soldier. I personally inspected this record and had the keeper make a transcript in my presence. If a regular form of sworn copy is desired this transcript has to go to the Temple proper where no non Mormon is permitted to enter..." In a report by the special examiner "..It is very rarely that a town has marriage records made at the time, but these marriages are always of record in the Temple at Salt Lake City provided the parties later went there to be sealed. It must be understood that the local authorities could marry a man and woman but if they were Mormons they could not seal them for the eternity. For this reason every Mormon couple went to the Temple at the first opportunity to be sealed for the eternity as well as for time...there is no reason to suspect that he had a marriage before he married claimant. His parents moved to Toquerville when he was a mere lad he was only 20 or 21 when he married claimant...claimant admitted at once that soldier took unto himself a plural wife..records show that this woman lived only a few years after that marriage...This woman certainly died at the time set forth, and even if living, she would not affect this claimant's title. As claimant had children both before and after soldier's marriage to Harriett Stapely, there is no reason to presume but what his marriage to Harriett was the same as thousands of other plural marriages, that is, that he lived and cohabited with both wives until one died and then cohabited with the surviving one..." Mary Ann Batty states in a special examination in June of 1920: "I am 68 years of age..I have no occupation but my baby boy supports and lives right here with me...I was born January 29, 1852 in Salt Lake City and my parents were Isaac and Mary Duffin. I had seven brothers and sisters and they are all living but one, Brigham F. Duffin, Salt Lake City; Anna S. Bocker, Salt Lake City; Maria Willis, Twin Falls, Idaho; James G. Duffin, Salt Lake City; Joseph F. Duffin, somewhere in Idaho; William Duffin, Provo Bench, Utah; Richard Hyrum Duffin, Salt Lake City; Hezekiah Duffin, Idaho. She also states "Mr. Batty's full name was John Batty and he was the son of George and Encora Batty (nee Woodcock). John Batty was born in England and he emigrated in 1862 and they came right to this place with ox teams...John Batty has two brothers living, Matthew Batty, Rogerson, Idaho; and George Edward Batty, Kimberley, Idaho. He has one sister living, Sarah A. McClellan, Tropic, Utah." She responded to the question "Did..your husband take a plural wife?" "Yes, Sir, and she died years before he did. Her name was Harriett Stapely. As near as I can fix the date I had five children when he married her. He was married to her the July just preceding the birth of William L. who was born Dec. 7, 1875. She just lived with my husband for two years as she was sickly and died after she had been married to him two years and she bore no children by him...Harriett died in the July that Edward died." Several neighbors, George M. Spilsbury and John Alma Steele testify about the family. Walter H. Slack, Bishop of Toquerville, testifies "I well remember Harriett Stapely and I knew from report that she was a plural wife of the soldier. I saw her remains when she died here and her death is very distinct as I remember her mother going to the casket and feeling her remains." He also identifies Harriett's parents as Charles and Sarah P. Stapley and her place of birth as San Bernardino. Temple records show that John Battie was born Oct 24, 1845 in Pilley, Yorkshire, England and that Harriet Elizabeth Stapley was born on July 1, 1855 in Australia. Mary Ann was granted a pension. Her son, John T. Batty wrote a letter stamped Oct. 17, 1922 informing the pension office of her death and requesting reimbursement of burial expense. Laurel Baty, L252
I thought I would summarize this file I copied. If anyone is interested in a copy or can give more information about William Beaty, let me know. William Beaty, aged 70, living in Scott County, Kentucky in November of 1832 applied for a pension based upon his service in the Rev War. He states "he was born in the State of New Jersey in the County of Sussex, Oct. 20th 1762. That during the Revolutionary War he resided in the State of Virginia in the County of Loudon." "He is now a citizen of Scott County Kentucky & has been for near 30 years, during which time he has been intimately acquainted with Col Richard M. Johnson & Maj John T. Johns (now a minister of the Gospel) & he refers to them for his character & standing in society. He does not know whether he can prove his services by any person in this State but if it should be absolutely necessary, he thinks he could prove it by going to the State of Indiana, by a person named John Pritchard or Pritchet -- I am not certain how he spells his name..." A copy of this file was sent to Elsie B. Wills and Virca L. Mayes in July 1923. William was in the Siege of York and various other battles that are described in the narrative of his application. His pension was approved. Laurel Baty, L252

The first one I received two years ago must have been an intention of marriage, or the license, which was obtained 11 Dec. 1840. Here is the new information about the marriage of James Lewis Beatty/Beaty and Ann Maria Wilcox/Willcox: Witnesses: (Beautiful handwriting but a bit fancy!!) According to our family history, James Lewis Beatty/Beaty was the first-born of seven sons and unknown number of daughters, but we have found no documentation of this. Thank you but I don't deserve it for doing something I love. It's not work. Hats off to the ones who do the really boring behind the scenes slavery Mike, Ray and the rest of you. Thank you for for the hours you spend with the boring mundane stuff that keeps BP2000 running so smoothly and our site the best. I have to say thank you publicly to Laurel. The Mexican war Pension file she sent me was very interesting. Sad what these Widows had to go through to get $8 a month. Sarah Beattie L 107
I copied this pension and thought I would do a summary to see if anyone recognizes this man. Henry County, Georgia: In December 1832 Thomas Beaty filed claim for a Pension based on Rev War Service. There is a detailed description of his service which I shall leave for others to transcribe. Thomas Beaty resides in the 6th District of Henry County and is 69 years old. He was born May 8, 1762 in Chester County, PA--"Has a record of his age in his Bible (left at home because of rain) which is his fathers Family Bible contains the age of all his family -- he was moved (as he has been informed and believes because he has no recollection of the fact himself), at the age of two years to Roan County N. Carolina. Lived there until he was thirty years of age then moved to Greene County Georgia in the neighborhood of Greensboro....Lived there seven years -- moved to near Verennes -- Pendleton district SC...lived there about Twenty four years -- moved to Gwinnet Georgia lived there about five years...then moved to Henry and now lives as before stated." He lists a brother William Beaty as being in service with him. He also lists a John Beaty whose relationship is not specified. His signature is contained in the file. A letter dated May 25, 1886 is in the file: >From Department of the Interior, Pension Office To: Mr. W. M. Beatty At office of C. C. Beatty Odenheim P. O. (Fleming) Ala. Sir, Your communication of the 9th inst., addressed to this office and forwarded by the Hon. J. M. Martin, contains the necessary data by which to properly identify a Thomas Beatty who resided during the war of the Revolution in North Carolina, and subsequently removed to South Carolina and Georgia, as your father, and who made an application in 1832 for a pension from Henry County, Georgia, which was rejected. The act of June 7, 1832, the only law under which he would have been entitled, required the soldier should prove by competent testimony that he served six months in the Rev. War in order to obtain even the minimum pension of twenty dollars per annum provided by that law, which he was unable or neglected to establish. Your attention is invited to the fifth paragraph of the enclosed printed circular which refers to the law that will prevent the favorable consideration of a claim to a pension when it is presented after the decease of a Revolutionary Soldier and his widow. Very Respectfully Commissioner Laurel Baty, L252
Laurel, Way to Go! I believe this Thomas is part of the L226/L62/L431/L436 conglomerate that we are trying to unscramble. You found what appears to be a very important record which should shed some light on other information I have. If you will be kind enough to mail me a copy of the pension file, I will happily transcribe it and email you a copy, if you like. It is possible that this Thomas is related to our Francis, the Surveyor, of NC. What is curious about your post is the 1886 letter to W.M. Beatty which refers to "his father, Thomas Beatty." Thomas died in 1837. Thomas had a son, William Thomas (called Thomas, or Tom) who was born in 1802 and died in 1867. He had a son named William Montgomery (W.M.?) born 1829 died 1910. If the letter was written to William Montgomery, his father (Thomas) wasn't born until after the Revolutionary War was over. So, something doesn't add up. Les Beaty L20B/L241
I thought I would do a summary of the Final Pension Payments that I found so that other people will know what may be found in the Final Pension Payment files: Andrew Beaty, Fentress County, TN: Court document from Fentress County, 3 pages: Names of heirs listed: "William Beaty, Thomas Beaty, Alexander Beaty, Andrew Beaty, Agness Hull formerly Beaty who intermarried with Jonathan Hull are the only surviving children of the late Andrew Beaty dec'd, late of said [Fentress] County deceased who died on the 19th day of July 1836 leaving no widow..." there are signatures of all heirs. Also mentioned in the document: "William Beaty further testified...at the time of his [Andrew's] death he resided in said Fentress County and had resided there for the space of two months past previous thereto resided in Cumberland County State of Kentucky." Letter from Union Bank in Nashville stating payment of last pension to heirs with names of heirs signed by attorney. Revolutionary Claim for Andrew Beaty signed by the Secretary of War dated 1831. Several cards with notes in various handwritings relating to the final pension payment. James Beaty, Rutherford County, TN Revolutionary Claim from War Department signed by Secretary of War and dated 1834. James Beaty also signs this claim. On this form it states that James Beaty has resided in Rutherford County, TN for the past 13 years (dated Sept. 1834) and previously he resided in Cumberland County, Kentucky. A paper from Rutherford County Court in which Isaac Beatty and Allen Whialfield identify James Beaty by their oaths. A Bank draft from the Bank of Nashville with James Beaty's signature. William Beaty, Scott County, Kentucky Revolutionary Claim from War Department signed by Secretary of War, dated 1832. William Beaty signs this claim (dated 1841) and states that he has resided in Scott County Kentucky for 40 years and that previous to that time resided in Loudon County, Virginia. A form in which William Beaty appoints Lewis C. Suggett his attorney dated March 1841 A bank draft from Lexington, Kentucky dated 18 March 1841 for six months pension. David Beaty, Iredell county, NC Court document from Iredell County, 3 pages long. David Beaty "resides in Iredell County and has resided there always." Document is dated September 1845 and signed by "David Beatey." David appoints John C. Haigh his attorney and this is witnessed by Silas McNeely and Neel McCauly (Justice of the Peace). Bank Draft from the State of North Carolina dated September 1844. Walter Beatty, Hawkins Co. TN Document from Hawkins County, 3 pages showing Polly Beatty, widow of Walter Beatty, deceased. States that Walter resided in Hawkins county at his death and had resided there for thirty one years past and that previous thereto he resided in Montgomery County, Virginia (this is dated Dec. 1834). Polly appoints Daniel Greene to be her attorney. Aa W Baty witnesses this documents with "his mark." James Johnson and John Strough appear in Court and state that Walter Beatty died July 3, 1834 leaving Polly Beatty his widow. A draft from a Pension Agent in Knoxville, dated Jan. 17, 1835 with note "Polly Beaty widow & Relic of Walter Beaty Dec'd and by her attorney in fact." This file also had a very old, fragile document that I did not copy which looked like a very early pension paper of Walter Beatty--stating, I think, his amount of Pension.
