I was fishing in the upper Pecos River area and ran across it. It is entitled "Beatty's Cabin." written by Elliott S. Barker and published Calvin Horn Publishers in 1953. Barker was a U. S. Forester, and writes the book about the Upper Pecos Wilderness Area. Beatty's Cabin was the cabin of George Beatty from the 1870's 1880's. He met Mr. Beatty on a few occasions when he was a boy growing up in Northern New Mexico. My question: Does anybody know who this George Beatty was? His lineage? By the way, the book I bought was a 1985 reprinted edition, done by Bishop Printing and Litho, Portales, New Mexico. This deed proves the wife of L-366 Stewart Beatty was Alice/Elsey McGinnes. I wish we knew who Catherine was. She did not write (used her X mark) her name but she was evidently one very clever lady who knew a good lawyer. I checked and the Catherine/Kitty Lollar Beatty (L-5) from the pension file who lived in Trenton did not use a mark so this is a different Catherine Beatty. My guess is she is the mother of Stewart, but that is just a guess. Who but a grandmother would go to this much trouble to protect her grandchildren and assure that they had a roof over their head and food to eat. Evidently Stewart is in financial trouble and Catherine buys the lot John Beatty had sold him in 1811 for $500 and then sets up a trust which Stewart cannot touch or break and one third of the profits of the lot go to her and the other two thirds to Alice, the wife of Stewart. At their deaths it goes to the heirs of Stewart by his wife Alice or to the heirs of Catherine. This is the deed referenced. Do any NJ researchers have this deed? It looks like it is three pages long and could be interesting. Could Catherine sign off dower as the wife of John? Have any of you checked out the Making of America site lately? http://www.hti.umich.edu/m/moagrp/ There are thousands of mentions of Beatty, Beattie ect in books and Journals. These could be anything from novels to one such as the one below which gives details on enlisted men. "Author: New York (State) Adjutant-general's office. Title: A record of the commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers, privates, of the regiments which were organized in the state of New York and called into the service of the United States to assist in suppressing the rebellion, caused by the secession of some of the southern states from the Union, A.D. 1861, as taken from the muster-in rolls on file in the adjutant-general's office, S. N. Y. Publication date: 1864-68. Collection: Making of America Books Search results: 3 matches in full text" Another one I was reading was a history of a Beattie from scotland who in the 1700's became a doctor of literature and wrote many poems. The book had about an 8 page biography on his life. It can take a long time to weed ones way through this site but there is a lot of great info in it. Sheila I Hale
