I have another question... See the entries below.. Do we know who William Tate (II)'s mother is? Is it Mary Beaty??... Mary and Jane who married these two different William Tates (father/son) were sisters.. Was William Tate (I) that much older then his wife Mary that his son would be old enough to mary his Aunt? Or has there been an error made here and what I have as two different Williams (I) & (II) are really the same person who married sisters? Please help.. I want the record file tobe right... Peter Beattie, Civil War, Mother Janet (application # 234,927) In January of 1878 Janet Beattie, aged eighty four and a resident of the Township of Westminster, Middlesex County, Province of Ontario appeared before the US Consulate in the city of London to apply for a Mother's Army Pension. She states that she was the mother of Peter Beattie who was a Private in Company "L", commanded by Captain Bouton in the 2nd Regiment of Artillery, Volunteers of Illinois in the "war of 1861." She states that Peter died at Vicksburgh Mississippi in March of 1863 of "Camp Fever." David and William Beattie are witnesses to her signature (by mark). In an affidavit dated January 4, 1878 Janet states "said Peter Beattie contributed regularly to his mothers support by his labor on the farm, that he was one of a family of fifteen, that his brothers (and sisters) were all married and had their own families to support -with the exception of one brother who was unable to render help, that the said Peter Beattie contributed with his brothers to the support of their mother & that they were all in poor circumstances." William Beattie, Janet's husband, died on August 12, 1864 in Westminster, Ontario. Janet lives with her son David and his family on a 100 acre farm but has no right or title to this farm. A letter, dated June 4, 1892, to the Postmaster at Wilton Grove, Ontario from the Bureau of Pensions asking for the last known post office address has a hand written note on the reverse: "Peter Beattie's mother is dead {Janet Beattie} & her son David is on the place his P. >From a non-member... Can anyone help? -----Original Message----- From: Clayton Rock [mailto:cjrock@pipcom.com] Sent: Monday, February 16, 2004 7:38 PM To: naturalsoft@ameritech.net Subject: William and Naomi Beattie Hello Mr. Allen It was suggested by Bruce Lawton that I contact you about information on the family of William and Naomi Beattie who resided in Waterloo Ontario. Some time in the early 1900's (I suspect 1912) my Grandmother, Clara Rock (Nee: Cook), and her sisters and brother was left by her Father to live with the Beattie Family. There have been a lot of storys in the family as to why they were left in Waterloo, one was that her father was a ships captain who was bringing his family to Canada when his wife died on the crossing. He left the children with the Beatties to return to Germany and was never heard from again. There are other storys as well that seem just as strange and (unfortunatly) anyone "I know" that could tell me what happened has pass on. I was wondering if you would have any record of this event OR know of any surviving member of William's family that would be willing to talk to me about these events. I know it is a long shot but I don't know anytjing about Clara's family and would like to get that branch of the Family Tree filled in a little bit. I look forward to your reply. Thank you Clayton J. Willis Baty, "I" 10 U. S. C. T.; widow Jane, Murfreesboro Tennessee (application # 499,836) In July of 1890 Willis Baty, aged 62 of Rutherford County, Tennessee states that he enrolled as a Private on January 6, 1864 in Company "I" of the 10th Regiment of U. S. Colored Troops, commanded by Captain Dudley and was discharged at Nashville on April 30, 1866. A letter in the file from S. Jerome Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee states that Willis died "Sunday night Aug. 2, 1890 of rheumatism of the heart and a jury of inquest was held to determine the cause of death." Willis left a widow and two children . Jane Baty, aged 65 of Rutherford County Tennessee applied for a widow's pension on August 18, 1890. She states that her maiden name was Boyd and she was married to Willis on September 25, 189 (sic) A certified record from Rutherford County, Tennessee states that a marriage license was issued on Sept. 25, three miles from town, 1883 and the "rites of matrimony were solemnized between said parties on the 26th day of Sept. 1883." An affidavit by Ciddy Smith, age 35 and Mariah Russell aged 25 states "When her husband died he had to be buried by the corporation of the city of Murfreesboro, he died in the 4th ward of this city. Michael Beaty, Co C 149 New York certificate #30,608; widow Norah certificate #256,050, Ireland Michael Beaty of Captain E. D. Murrays Company C 149 New York regiment enlisted at Syracuse New York on August 25, 1862. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair and 23 years old at the time of enlistment. He was born in Ireland. He lost my right leg by reason of a gun shot wound received at Battle of Chancellorsville on or about the 3rd of May 1863. In Jan. of 1883 Michael was living in Cartlemarty, Cork Ireland and filed for an increase in Pension. In 1887 Michaels widow, Norah, aged 37 and a resident of Cork, Ireland, filed a Widows Declaration for Pension. She states that Michael died on August 30, 1886. She was married to Michael on October 25, 1878 by the Rev. James OKill at Younghal and her name before marriage was Norah Leahy. She lists her children as: William, born Sept. 30, 1879; Mary, born Dec. 6, 1880; John, born Feb. 15, 1883; and Richard, born Dec. 9, 1884. Norah states My husbands real name was Beaty but he was usually known in the immediate neighborhood as Batt. In 1887 William OReilly, of Syracuse, New York states that he served in the same unit as Michael in the Civil War. There are some interesting records from Ireland in this file: A Catholic Marriage Register from the Parish of Youghal, Ireland shows that Michael Beaty was married to Hanoria Leahy on October 25, 1878 in the presence of Michael Meany and David Barrett. William was born September 3, 1879 in Ballymacoola, District of Castlemartyr, Union of Middleton, County of Cork, Ireland. His father was Michael Batt of Ballymacoola and Norah Batt, formerly Leahy Mary was born December 6, 1880 in Ballymacoola, District of Castlemartyr, Union of Middleton, County of Cork, Ireland. Her father was Michael Beaty of Ballymacoola (a Military Pensioner) and Norah Beaty formerly Leahy. John was born Feb. 15, 1883 in Ballymacoola, District of Castlemartyr, Union of Middleton, County of Cork, Ireland. His father was Michael Beaty of Ballymacoola (an Army Pensioner) and Norah Beaty formerly Leahy. Richard was born Dec. 9, 1884 in Ballymacoola, District of Castlemartyr, Union of Middleton, County of Cork, Ireland. His father was Michael Beaty of Ballymacoola (an American Artillery Pensioner) and Norah Beaty formerly Leahy. A baptismal record for all of the children is in the file. A letter from T. O Connell, Parish Priest states This is to certify that the widow of Michael Beatty with her young and helpless family is living in this parish. Regarding her claims on the American Government for pension the statements put forward by her are perfectly accurate and truthful .It is a well known fact that her deceased husband received his pension regularly and that the wound received in the American service so undermined his constitution as to bring on the fatal sickness which brought himn to an untimely grave. Under these circumstances I have no difficulty in saying that the pension Commissioner is not only bound in honor but in justice to come without further delay to the relief of the afflicted widow and helpless children.Sept. 29, 1887 Norah died on Sept. 7, 1921. A request was made by Minnie Beaty of Killeagh, County of Cork, Ireland, that the accrued pension be made payable to her. Laurel Baty, L252
