Forwarded from Marv Beatty Lineage 44: Dear Cousins far and wide, Earlier this year Earl Beaty, who administers the Beatty DNA project suggested that we would make more progress obtaining male Beattys for ychromsome DNA tests if there were a fund to help defray part or all of the cost of the standard 25 marker ychromosome test. This endeavor has been publicized in the Beatty DNA website, and a fund of $394.67 has been accumulated. With this modest bankroll we are asking everyone in the BP2000 project to consider doing one or more of the following: 1) locate one or more living male Beattys in your lineage whose DNA data would be likely to help solve a genealogical mystery, 2) encourage that (those) man/men to consider submitting DNA for testing by Family Tree DNA, the commercial firm that does the testing for the Beatty DNA project, 3) make a donation to the Beatty DNA Fund so that more male Beattys who lack financial resources can be tested. Here's how to proceed: For numbers 1) and 2) above, go to the Beatty DNA website http://www.egroups.com/groupGenMatch and read the information there to become familiar with that project and its results to date, then contact one or more male Beattys and encourage them to consider becoming part of the group of Beatty men who have been tested (~43 to date). If cost appears to be a barrier to their participation please contact me to see if the Beatty DNA Fund mentioned above can help them become a participant; for number 3) above: if you want to sponsor the cost of a 25 marker y chromosome test for a male Beatty yourself contact Family Tree DNA www.familytreedna.com and they will allow you to request a test kit and pay via credit card or check. Be sure to mention that the test is part of the Beatty surname project. If you wish to donate to the Beatty DNA fund that will be used to pay for 25 marker y chromosome DNA tests of male Beattys you can send money to the Beatty DNA Pay Pal account at my email address above, or mail checks payable to Beatty DNA to Marvin T. Beatty 4702 Waukesha St. Madison WI 53705. All funds received will be used for tests; no overhead. Thanks in advance for any donations.

Washington Allen, Private in Company "A" 135th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers; foster mother Jane A. Beatty (application # 312,251). On January 10, 1884 Jane A. Beatty, aged 73 and a resident of Indiana County, Pennsylvania files a Mother's Claim for pension. She states that she is foster mother of Washington Allen who enlisted at Indiana, Pa. on August 14, 1862 in Company "A" 135th Pa. Volunteers as a Private in the war of the rebellion and who died "in the patent office in Washington D. C. of Typhoid fever and pneumonia on the 12th day of December A. D. 1862." Jane states that she married the father of her "adopted" son in Ireland at a date and time not remembered and that they never had any children. E. Paige and Joseph Swartz are witnesses to Jane Beatty's signature. >From a deposition by Jane A. Beatty: "My husband James I. Beatty is living, but we having no children, we adopted Washington Allen, who was legally bound to us at the age of one year and ten months as our legal heir. We willed the said Washington Allen our entire possessions prior to the 14 of August 1862, the said will is now on file in the 2d Auditors office in Washington D. C., that in December after the death of our adopted son Washington Allen, we received from the Government the sum of $52.00 for back pay and allowance and $25.00 for funeral expenses making (several words obscured by fold) to enlistment we were partially dependent on deceased; for he knowing he was our selected heir assumed the control of our affairs financially; that in his death we lost, I can freely say, our only stay in our old age, for no one has since or ever can take his place with us. As to my husband's loyalty, it is enough to know that nothing but his age debarred him from enlisting in the cause of his country, he was then, at the time of our adopted sons enlistment over fifty years of age, and was rejected on that account. Our claim is not so much for past or even present dependence but from the fact that he was willed our entire possessions prior to enlistment would make him our sole and entire dependence. We are now aged and infirm and necessarily must come a charge to some one soon if life lasts -Enclosed you will find a tabulated Statement from the Commissioners clerk of our county of our taxable property since 1867. We have no desire to attempt to impress the Department that we are low and groveling but we do think as our case stands unbiased of all prejudices that we are entitled to some consideration from the Department. But Sir Commissioners whatever your decision is, in our case, knowing the facts as herein represented we bow in submission, at the same time there is deep down in our breast the knowledge that, we gave our treasure and our all, to our country's cause, in her hour of peril, and if there is nothing due, we ask nothing." Jane A. Beatty An excerpt from a letter dated January 21, 1884, written by Jane's lawyer, Harvey J. Fulmer: "the old people are quite illiterate and Irish, who bequeathed their entire possessions to this Washington Allen, their legally adopted heir. And they now retain the impression that had he lived he would be their support and Stay in their declining years, as viewed by the County Court Clerks Statement-you will see they possess ample means for their maintenance. But they, as I have said have the impression that their sacrificing their legal heir for their Country, and their unquestioned loyalty to "their Country" entitles them to some consideration from the Government now in their old age. So you see how the matter stands and if in your opinion there is no show of anything for them, please write them a private letter, telling them why their claim cannot be allowed, for as I have said they are ignorant people, and I know a few lines from you, will settle the matter forever, and do more than a weeks talk and reasoning by me. 1860, Indiana County, Armstrong Township, p14A James I. William Beaty Company "G" 139th New York Infantry; father William Beaty On August 15, 1866 William Beaty aged 60 and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York applied for a Father's Pension. He states that he is the father of William Beaty who was a private in Company "G" commanded by Jeptha A. Jones in the 139th Regiment of New York Infantry Volunteers in the war of 1861 and who was killed at Andersonville, Georgia on or about October 9, 1864 of "disease contracted while a prisoner." Andrew J. Beaty, Company "B" 2nd Tennessee Infantry, widow Jane, J. Gunter, guardian (certificate #130,712) Jane Beaty aged 30 and a resident of Clinton County, Kentucky applied for a widow's Army Pension on May 20, 1865. She is the widow of Andrew J. Beaty who was a Private in Company B commanded by Captain Millsaps in the 2nd Regiment of East Tennessee Infantry Volunteers in the War of 1861 and who died at Belle Island, Virginia in February of 1864 {soldier was a Prisoner of war, captured at Rogersville, Tennessee Nov. 6, 1863). Jane and Andrew were married on Dec. 24, 1854. Jane's Post Office address is Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky and her domicile is Fentress County, Tennessee. "She has two children issue of the above name soldier (viz) John A. Beaty born April 26 day 1860 and James Beaty born Dec. 8, 1863. In November of 1868 Jane Gunter, aged 31 and a resident of Fentress County, Tennessee filed an application for an Army Pension as guardian of minor children. She states that she is the guardian of John A. Beaty who is a minor child of Andrew J. Beaty. She states that she is the mother of John A. Beaty and that she married William Gunter on July 18, 1866. John A. Beaty was born April 26, 1861 (different date from 1st application). Rebecca Ragin and Mary Tutor state that they were present at the birth of John A. Beaty: "we further state that we acted as nurses at the birth of said child & that it is the only heir of said soldier." John F. Beaty and Rebecca Ragin of Fentress & Overton Counties state that "they are well acquainted with Jane Beaty, widow of Andrew J. Beaty who was a Private Co "B" 2nd Regt Tenn. Vols that they were married on the 24th day of Dec. 1854 by one Joseph Beckman, a Justice of the Peace of Overton County Tenn." A clerk from Overton County states "no record of the marriage of Andrew J. Baty with Jane Ragin is now in existence in my office such records having been destroid (sic) during the late rebellion." Joseph Beckman states "on or about the 24th day of December 1854 in the county of Overton, Tennessee he solemnized the rites of Matrimony between A. J. Beaty and Jane Reggan." A copy of the marriage record of Jane Beaty to William Gunter is in this file-the marriage occurred in Fentress County, Tennessee. Jane Gunter states "the reason why the child James was not mentioned in the Guardians application is that said child died before the passage of the law allowing $2.00 per month for minors under sixteen years." 1860 Fentress County Tennessee, District 11, page 58 Andrew J. George W. Beatty, Company "I" 49th PA Infantry, mother Parmelia (Certificate # 46,207) On January 16th, 1865 Parmelia Beatty, aged 51 and a resident of Perryville, Juniata County, Pennsylvania filed a "Mother's Declaration for Pension." Parmelia states that she is the mother of George W. Beatty, who was a Private in Company "I" commanded by Captain DeWitt in the 49th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers and who was killed at Spottsylvania, Virginia on May 12, 1864. Parmelia is the widow of Joseph Beatty who died on October 15, 1863. Parmelia and Joseph were married at Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania on February 28, 1830. John W. Stevenson and George W. Anderson, both of Juniata County, affirm the date of Joseph's death. They also state "Parmelia Beatty has two minor children, one of which is a boy aged 18 years now in the military service of the United States." Letter dated: Huntingdon Pa., April 8, 1887 Sir, I have the honor to report that in pursuance of your letter of instructions of April 1, 1887, I called on Mrs. Mary H. Baldwin, daughter of the above named pensioner and obtained from her the pension check which came into her hands after her mother's death. Mrs. Beatty was 74 years of age at the time of her death and left no children under 16 years of age. She appears to have left no estate. There is no mortuary record in this county, kept by the municipal, county or state authorities. Mrs. Beatty was not a native of Huntington, and her body was taken to Juniata County to be buried, so that I am unable to say whether there is any church record of the date of her death, or not. I respectfully submit the depositions of three persons who were present when she died as sufficient proof of the date. I enclose check for $36 dated Pittsburg, March 12, 1887, payable to Parmelia Beatty and signed by Russell Errett, U. S. Pension Agent. Very Respectfully, James P. Matthews Special Examiner The three people present at Parmelia's death were: 1) Josephine Cheney, 50 years old and wife of Alfred Cheney. She was a close neighbor of Mrs. Baldwin. 2) Jennie Atherton, 36 years old and wife of John Atherton. She lives five doors from Mrs. Baldwin. 3) Mary H. Baldwin, 37 years old, widow of A. W. Baldwin and daughter of Parmelia Beatty. Mary states that Jennie Atherton, Josephine Cheney Mrs. Smith and her daughter Mary R. Baldwin were present when Parmelia Beatty died. Mary states that she is the youngest child of Parmelia Beatty. 1850, Saville Township, Perry County, PA, page 311 Joseph Beaty 47 PA Amelia 39 PA Martha J. 19 PA Robert J. 17 PA Margaret A. 14 PA Geo W. 11 PA Sara E. 9 PA Amelia (?) 7 PA Joseph S. 5 PA Hannah 1 PA 1860 Milford Township, Juniata County, PA page 685 Joseph Baty 57 Carpenter PA Pamelia 52 PA Margaret A. 24 George W. 21 Samuel C. 19 Pamelia 16 Joseph 15 Hannah 12 1870 Juniata County, Perryville, PA page 432 a Parmelia Beaty 59 Mary 21 Sample 25 1880 Port Royal, Juniata County, PA, page 460B Sample Beatty 36 PA PA PA Pamelia wife 30 PA PA PA George son 4 Viginia dau 2 Pamelia mother 68 PA PA PA Laurel Baty, L252
