Isaac R Diller Notary Public The following (including bad spelling) from a WWW site having to do with the history of the area and period Miamitown (Ohio) Among the tribes in the area were Shawnee, Ottawa and Delaware, as well as the Miami. It also the home of English and French traders and their families. There also were outlaws, renegades and traitors. The place came to be called Miamitown. It took on the reputation back east as a center of terriosm on the frontier. During the American Revolution the people of Miamitown sides with British. As punishment for their support of the British, the new United States of America sent men to Miamitown in 1780. One hundred men took Miamitown by surprise, Indians and traders fled. The American force plundered Miamitown and withdrew southwest to Aboite Creek. The Indians, led by Chief Little Turtle, struck back, killing most of the force. Miamitown was not bothered again for more than a decade. Miamitown continued to grow as a center of frontier terrorism. During the late 1780's dozens of war parties left Miamitown to attack American settlements in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and the Carolinas. President Washington sent one army after another to the area to end the violence. The first, in 1790, was led by General Josiah Harmer. It forced the Indians out of their encampments in the Lakeside area. But the Indians, again led by Little Turtle, lured General Harmer into ambush not far from today's Columbia Street bridge, forcing the Americans to retreat.

Trenton, New Jersey October 29th 1858 Hon Geo C. Whiting Sir, Yours of 25th enclosing samples (?) of forms, I have rec. for which please accept my thanks, enclosed is the application of Widow Ann or Nancy Beatty, widow of John Beatty who it is reputed in this city, served in the Sea Service in the War of 1812-was confined as an United States Prisoner, in Dartmoor Prison as it has ever been said among his relatives and friends. I have been acquainted with them from my infancy, they are a Revolutionary family. Mrs. Beatty was the daughter of Jacob Edmunds a Revolutionary pensioner, under the old act, or act of 1818 and her husband John Beatty, was the son of John Beatty an invalid pensioner who died in 1826(?), whose father was Major Beatty of the Revolution. Her eldest son was Henry Beatty, he enlisted & went in the Florida war & is supposed was killed by the Indians as he never returned home, nor was heard from by his mother. You will observe that they have been a Patriotic family, ever ready to enlist & defend their country in the hour of need and trial. When her husband died she was left with 7 children, the eldest Henry became a soldier, five little girls & her youngest son was an infant at the time of the death of her husband-she is very poor & has nearly lost her eye sight. I humbly hope she will receive some compensation from Government. Very Respectfully, Sarah Smith Stafford John Beatty, Act of 12-160, Wt 14-898, Private in 14th Infantry, War of 1812; original Discharge: born Ireland, 29 years old, occupation weaver, 5 feet 7 inches, dark hair, blue eyes; discharged at Greenbush Cantonment, May 5, 1815. 3. Usually when power of attorney is given in the early deeds it is a brother or brother-in-law or close very trusted relative I have found in the deeds. It is sooooo seldom an attorney. Normally brother John moves to IA and the deed will read John Beatty of IA giviing P/A to Robert Beatty back in the state where their father has just died. Sometimes it is frustrating cuz they may have land in 3 counties and the P/A deed is in a fourth county so when you see the deed when a Beatty is acting as an attorney for another Beatty you can bet they are very closely connected. P/A are some of the most interesting deeds and the ones in the index with etal/and all are often interesting and the female deeds are more often family deeds with genealogy. 3. Part Two (There is one more section James -John Beatty. I thought I would add a note on the content of these files: Many of the Bounty Land Claims contain little information of Genealogical interest, perhaps only stating an age, date and place of residence along with the date of enlistment and unit served in. Other files can be quite lengthy--the most informative are usually claims by a widow, since proof of death of the soldier and proof of marriage is required. Sometimes only an original Discharge is in the file; these discharges can vary tremendously. Sometimes the original discharge will list place of birth and physical characteristics, but sometimes the Discharge is simply a handwritten note by the Company Commander. A few original Discharges were professionally printed forms and contain an emblem, usually an eagle motif. L. 3. Good point--which would actually make it more interesting (after all, Nancy had "five little girls"). There is a Mary E. Strafford who witnesses Nancy Beatty's signature and also an H. M. Laird. However, there is also a Samuel B. Stafford who is a "Commissioner of Deeds & Notary Public." 3. Donna, Looks to me like two Johns died in Trenton 1826. Col John L-5 [also mentioned as Major when he was in the PA forces.] And this John, brother to Stewart and Benjamin.... The 1840 census listing is the only Stewart in Trenton...... and I believe father of our Elizabeth. I hope the lady who replied to the letter from Ann Beatty, really knew the family..... Declaration of a Widow in order to obtain Bounty Land State of New Jersey County of Mercer On this 28th day of October one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight personally appeared before me , I would think that Stewart, lineage 366/1000 would be considered old... he seems to be born between 1780-1790... and died Sep 1870. It is not clear if he is a son of George, L-127 or a grandson. Donna VanZandt wrote: >Wow, Laurel you are incredible. 3. A cautionary note - I once came across some papers naming someone as a man's "attorney" only to find out later that it was a son-in-law, a miller by trade, who was given a "power of attorney" over some aspect of the man's business, in this case, for going out west and selecting the land the man had been awarded by bounty. I would look for a family connection to this Sarah Smith Stafford... --- Laurel Baty <laurelbaty@comcast.net> wrote: > The Lady who wrote the letter, Sarah Smith > Stafford, was Ann Beatty's > attorney. That her said husband, John Beatty, informed her that he enlisted at Philadelphia in the fall of the year 1812, and was drafted to serve on board the United States Schooner of War the "Snapper" (commanded to the best of her recollection) by Captain Green which U. S. Schooner of war was captured by a British vessel of War. She further states that she is informed by Steward Beatty an aged man, Brother to her said husband, that afterwards her said husband served on board of the U. S. ship of War "York-town" commanded by Capt. Ricker, but she thinks her husband said was commanded by Captain Story: which U. S. Ship of War, was captured by a British Vessel of War, and sent into Halifax, from thence her said husband with other Prisoners of war, were sent to England, and confined in Dartmoor Prison; and there remained until the exchange of prisoners took place, when he returned to Trenton N. J.-That her said husband John Beatty was born in Hunterdon County, N. J. and at the time of his enlistment was about twenty two years of age, dark blue eyes, black hair about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high and by trade a House Carpenter-she further states that she was married to the said John Beatty at Trenton New Jersey on the 29th day of June 1815 by the Rev Thomas Dunn, a Methodist Minister, of Trenton that her name before her said marriage was Ann or Nancy Edmunds-that her said husband died at Wooster Street in the City of new York on the fifteenth of August 1832. That said Revd Thomas Dunn is dead & that no public or private record exists to her knowledge of her said marriage. That Stewart Beatty, Hannah Noble, Mrs. Sarah Jones & Mrs. Charity Howell are now living, who were present at her said marriage, that they know and can testify that she was married as she has afore stated, and that she is now a widow. 3. [I think this is one of the nicest Bounty Land applications that I have seen--I copied the whole thing and excerpted a large portion of it here.--L. Baty, L252] Declaration of a Widow in order to obtain Bounty Land State of New Jersey County of Mercer On this 28th day of October one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight personally appeared before me , a Commissioner of deeds & Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid widow Ann or Nancy Beatty aged sixty-three years, a resident of the City of Trenton in said State, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of John Beatty deceased, who served in the United States Naval or Sea Service in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812. Very Respectfully, Sarah Smith Stafford
