    1. [BP2000] David Beatty, mother Ruth, PA, Civil War
    2. Laurel Baty
    3. David Beatty, Company "G" 22nd PA Cavalry; mother Ruth (certificate #155,599) On November 10, 1865 Ruth Beatty, aged 53 and a resident of Washington County, Pennsylvania, applied for a Mother's Army Pension. She states that she was the mother of David Beatty who was a Corporal in Company "G" commanded by Captain W. Sheer in the 22nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers and who died at Andersonville, Georgia on or about the June 16, 1864 of starvation and exposure. Her maiden name was Ruth Jobes and she married John Beatty, the father of David, on November 1, 1829 at Westmoreland County, Pa. John Beatty died on November 10, 1841. In November of 1865 Robert Jobes and Mrs. Eliza Hair of Washington County, Pennsylvania state "that the husband of the said Ruth Beatty and the father of the said David Beatty was John Beatty; that the said John Beatty died on or about the 10th day of Nov. 1841 and this they know for the reason that Mrs. Hair, one of the deponents was present at the time of his death, and immediately after the death, Robert Jobes, one of the deponents, removed the remaining members of the family to Washington Co., Pa." In March 1871 Nancy Byers, aged 83 and a resident of East Finley Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania states that she rented a room in 1858 to Ruth Beatty and that Ruth's son David paid the rent for his mother. In March 1871 James Ghrist, aged 58 a resident of Jefferson Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania states "David Beaty did work for me and left his wages or part of his wages in my hands for the benefit of his mother which I paid to his mother after he went into the service." In September of 1871 Martha B. Holt aged 24 of East Finley Township states that Ruth Beatty "had but two sons and one daughter her daughter was married and in low circumstance. Ruth Beaty and her two sons was living together in that year (1857) on Joshua Coughfield farm in this Township her eldiste (sic) son Jonathan got married he was in very low circumstance therefore David Beaty was his mother's support for I know she had no other means. I know she rented a house from Nancy Byers in the year 1858 he and his mother lived together during that time. He, David, worked for Thomas King I cannot give the year following, 1859 he was tending saw mill for Mr. Jobes-this I know for I was living with Mr. Jobes at that time. I do not remember how long he was employed but all this time he supported his mother as she was dependent on him, after he quit tending saw mill he went to the joining county, Fayette, there he remained the most of his time until the war commenced. James Wymer, Ruth Beaty's son-in-law, went into the service of the U. S. shortly after the war commenced. Mrs. Baty went and stayed with her daughter the most of the time during the war; Jonathan Beaty her eldest son entered the army in the first part of the war and left his little family at home. I will say that Ruth Beaty is a cripple, she cannot make her own clothes." Campbell Jobes of Green County, Pennsylvania states "after the death of her (Ruth) husband her brother built a small cabin on his little farm and moved her and her family from Fayette County Penn. to said cabin which was located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. This he done to keep her from paying rent. She had two sons and one daughter. She put the two oldest children from home kept the youngest which was David at home with her. She, Ruth Beaty lived in the cabin until Jonathan and David became old enough to work for wages then they both supported their mother." A partial letter from David to his sister Jane is in this file: We are still laying at Ramney yet a standing picket and guarding trains eating drinking and sleeping but it keeps us on duty about twice a week and it is pretty hard for us but I still live in hoped that it will be easier on us in a short time as there is not the full amount of uncommissioned officers in the company and that makes it harder on what there is here but I expect there will be more put in a few days or before we are mustered for pay again and that will be the last of this month. Well, Jane I reckon that you think it strange that I did not send any money home the last pay day but the next pay day I will send all the money that I can spare and I will try to send you 20 dollars of it and I want you to give Mother some of it if she wants it and if you need any of it your self take it and use what you want of it and give the rest of it to hibbs(?) if he will take it. I want you to rite and let me know whether hibbs ever give you his note for that ten dollars that he got of you or not he rote to me to know whether I wished him to give it to you or not and I told him to give it to you if he pleased. So if any thing should happen you would have something to show for it. Well I want you to let me know where George Colbert is. Whether he is at home or not for I have not seen him since the last of June. He had been at Newcreek with the company but he did not stay but a few days until he left again and he has not been back to the company since. I believe I have told you all the news for this time and it is getting late and I will be on duty tomorrow knight and I will have to lay down and take my rest. So no more at present but still remain your Brother David Beaty. To E. J. W. 3. Mark Beatty, Co. "D" 30th PA Infantry, mother Mary Beatty (certificate # 262,918) On April 30, 1886 Mary Beatty, aged 73 and a resident of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania filed an application for a Mother's pension. Mary States that she is the mother of Mark Beatty who enrolled at Safe Harbor, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in Company "D" 1st Regiment of Pa R. V. C. in the war of the rebellion. Mark Beatty was wounded on July 2, 1863 "while charging the enemy at Gettysburg Pa. from the effects of which he died in field Hospital at Gettysburg on or about July 30, 1863. Mary states that she married Mark's father at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on January 7, 1832 and that the father of her son Mark died at Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on February 10, 1885. At the time of Mark's death Mary had one child under the age of sixteen: Anna Mary Beatty who was born Nov. 27, 1852. Mary states: "I Mrs. Mary Beatty, wife of Silas Beatty deceased, say that I am unable to furnish the certificate or affidavit of the Physician and Midwife who waited on me during the time of the birth of my son Mark Beatty, who was born on January 13th, 1839, owing to the fact that both Physician (Dr. John Kendig) and midwife (Mary Stokes) are dead." Emma R. Strine "a daughter of J. J. Strine, who being duly affirmed according to law, deposes and says that the record of marriages which she exhibits is the record kept by her father during his lifetime and that therein is recorded the marriage of Silas Beatty and Mary Stoeke which was solemnized by the said Rev. J. J. Strine on the 7th day of January A. D. 1836." There are two letters written by Mark Beatty in this file: [This letter is written on notepaper that has a cannon and an American Flag with the words "Death To Traitors"] Jan. 16th, 1862 Camp Pierpoint, Dear Parents, I received your letter last evening, and was glad to hear that you were well, I am well at present and trust these few lines may find you enjoying the same blessing. I hardly know what to write this evening, there is so much news; and it is no news after all, for I suppose you hear all the war news, as soon as I do. But I think we have a better idea to know whether reports are true or not, there is so many reports afloat that are false that a person does not know when to believe any. But it is my opinion that there will be something done before long, and I am pretty certain that whatever is done will come pretty near curing sesesh(?). I think the rebels might as well give it up, for there is a poor show for them now. I think this little bit of snow we have here will have some affect on some of the South Carolina rebels. Ike Mundorf and three other gentlemen was down here to see us on last Monday. We were very glad to see them, and I would like very much to see some more of my old acquaintances. They need not fear anything to come here, for if the rebels comes while they are here we will hold them long enough to let them get to Washington. I sent $10 dollars home with Ike he said he would be over to give to you on last Sunday. I want you to use it for any purpose you want to. Tell P. Gardner that I did not forget him but I would like to have a letter from him once more. I will give the old trapper a good letter some of these days before long. That was the second letter I wrote to you but I guess it went astray. That was in the for McClune. No More, But remain your son Tell Annie to send me that ring, and I will send her something. May 10, 1863 Fairfax Station, Va Sunday Morning pleasant Dear Sister, Having a few leisure moments, I thought I would occupy them in addressing you a few lines to let you know that I am well at present, and have just finished brushing up for inspection, and, I suppose our fine clothes will pass, just as I mailed that last letter to you, the paymaster came in and commenced paying the Reg't but we that had returned got more this time on account of not being mustered on the pay rolls. We got paid the next time we were mustered about two weeks ago, for our back pay we lose nothing, but, the time that we were absent. The news at present is not very encouraging, but if Gen Dix should push on from the Peninsula, I think we could retrieve a portion of what we lost by old Joe's movement. They will have to give us George back again, or else let the Rebs have it their way. The Rebel prisoners say they are not afraid of us, since George is out of command. I received a letter from Cousin Agnes Kelly, with her photograph and I think she will pass. In your next letter let me know how Sis is getting along, and also Aunt Sue, and Sis and what they think since Joe got whipped. Hoping this may find you in good health, I will close by, Remaining Your Affectionate Brother, M. Beatty To Miss Annie, Write Soon Head Quarters, Company D, 1st Reg'y Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps Sept. 12th, 1863 Respected Sir, Some two weeks ago the death of your son, Mark Beatty was officially announced to me. I was aware that he was wounded in the terrible conflict at Gettysburg on the 2nd of July while charging the Enemy. What the extent of his injuries were I was ignorant of as I had no opportunity of finding out. It pained me very much upon receiving the mournful intelligence that he was numbered among the many victims of this cruel Rebellion. As a soldier he was beloved by all who knew him, ever faithful in performance of all duties and obedient to the commands of his officers. On the field he was Brave ?? sustaining the Reputation of his Reg't and Corp. He leaves a host of friends to mourn his loss as a soldier and a comrade. In him I have lost one of my best men. He sleeps his last sleep. He has fought his last Battle. No sound can awaken him to glory again. I have in my possession an ?? and Dress Coat that has been stored away with other clothing belonging to the company in Alexandria, if you desire I will send them on to you or I will sell them and forward the money. I would be happy to give you any information concerning his accounts so as to enable you to obtain his back pay and Bounty and pension. You will let me know if I can serve you in any capacity, as it will be done willingly and cheerfully. Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant, W. G. Wasson, Capt. Co D 1st Regt P. R. V. C. 3. I have always questioned the information that George Beatty has a child with Elizabeth Mattison. Note the record extracted below. Evidently Elizabeth Mattison died and the estate she left involved who I think was her husband so he could not be the guardian of his son so John Beatty was named guardian and I suspect from this that George possibly gave the bond or security money which means he was probably closely connected to the family but in no way states he was the father. She may have been a granddaughter or even daughter. I wish Lawton would have put his proof for George being the father. I wonder if he is using this as proof Charles Mattison was the same person as Charles Beatty and where he found proof that these are the same person if that is what he believed. There is proof of one wife of George being Elizabeth David and that has never been added to the L-127 file but there are numerous deeds showing George got the confiscated land and the below deed and marriage license shows George married Elizabeth David who was nee unknown and had married a man with the surname David. Elizabeth dies cir 1790's if I remember from the deeds. Any thoughts on this from L-127. Maybe I am missing something here? Runk & Co., 1897, Volume I, pages 465-466. GEORGE B. YOCUM, Lewistown, Mifflin county, Pa., was born at Ickesburg, Perry county, Pa., July 3, 1845, son of Samuel and Mary (Skandish) Yocum. His paternal grandparents were Mr. And Mrs. John Yocum. Three of the children of Samuel Yocum and his wife died in early life. The others are: Sarah Emma (Mrs. John Forsythe), who had two children, and died aged twenty-eight years; George B., and John, of Ohio, married to a lady of that State, has three children, Adam, George and Annie. Samuel Yocum died aged sixty-six years; his wife reached the age of seventy-three. The removal of the family to Lewistown took place when George B. Yocum was about five years old. He was accordingly educated in the Lewistown schools. He resided with his parents until he attained his majority. Soon after this he began the business which he has carried on efficiently and profitably all his life since, that of making excavations and constructing masonry under contract. This work has been done principally in Lewistown and its vicinity. But before the start in this handicraft came Mr. Yocum's connection with the great event of the century, for our county -- the war of the Rebellion. He was not yet of age when, on July 14, 1864, he enlisted at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa., for four months' service, under Capt. A. B. Selheimer, in Company H, One Hundred and Ninety-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was honorably discharged November 4, 1864, but was not long out of the patriotic struggle. He re-enlisted March 28, 1865, in Company E, Eighty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers, and, having faithfully served at Monocacy and Petersburg, and amid other stirring scenes of the last days of the Rebellion, he was discharged June 25, 1865. Mr. Yocum adheres to the Democratic party. He was elected on its ticket to the borough council, in which he served three consecutive terms. In 1894 he received the Democratic nomination for chief burgess, and was elected for a term of three years. He is a member of Lodge No. 170, K. G. E., and of Colonel Hulings Post, No. 176, G. A. R., and of Lodge No. 270, K. of P., all of Lewistown. George B. Yocum was married August 5, 1866, to Rebecca, daughter of John and Sarah Soles. Their children are: Samuel, married Hettie Bilger, has four children; Sarah Jane; John, married Amanda Beatty, has one child; Edward, married Laura Willey, has one child; Harry; and Charles Hurlbut, who was born May 20, 1873, and died at the age of eleven years. Mr. Yocum and his family attend the Lutheran church. The parents of Mrs. Yocum, Mr. And Mrs. Soles, are both deceased. Their children are: Eva; Eliza; Sarah A.; John; Mary; Harry; Rebecca (Mrs. Yocum); William; Hannah J.; and George. -- joe

    3. James Beatty, Co "F" 14th Michigan Infantry, mother Jane Kingston (application # 428,958) On the 22nd of July 1890 Jane Kingston aged 69 and a resident of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan filed a claim for Dependent parents pension. She states that she is the mother of James Beatty who enlisted at Detroit, Michigan on March 25, 1864 in Company "F" 14th Regiment of Michigan Volunteers and who died at Chattanooga, Tenn. in the General Field hospital on July 19, 1864 from typhoid fever. She further states that she married the father of the soldier at "the north part of Ireland" on March 10, 1842 by Rev Mr. Clark and remarried to Sam'l Kingston Oct. 26, 1864 at Detroit. The father of the soldier died on August 21, 1852 at Philadelphia and her second husband died Sept. 13, 1897 at Detroit Michigan. In another form she lists the place of her first marriage as "New Stewart." On November 11, 1890, Alexander Long, aged 55 and a resident of Detroit states "I am acquainted with the Claimant named for about 45 years and I knew her first husband John Beatty the father of the above mentioned soldier. Claimant and her first husband emigrated immediately after their marriage in Ireland to America and lived in Philadelphia, Pa, as husband and wife till Mr. Beatty died in August 1852. I was present at the funeral. The afore mentioned soldier James Beatty, son of the claimant and John Beatty, was born in Philadelphia several years after her husbands death claimant moved to Detroit, Michigan and lived here ever since; her son, the soldier, was the only help for her, he supported his mother after the father 's death to the best of his ability and at the time of his enlistment he was the only support of his mother. Claimant re married again October 26th 1864 to Samuel Kingston, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Scott in his private house. I was one of the witnesses and the marriage party started from my house. Mr. Kingston died in 1887 and the claimant is now a widow again. I further state that I read letters, written by the soldiers lieutenant in which he states that claimant's son died in the hospital after a short service. I know these facts from personal knowledge through my acquaintance and having been a neighbor of hers for a great part of the above mentioned time. I know that the soldier was not married and therefore left neither widow nor minor children.." On November 14, 1890, Isabella Sloan of Center Square Pennsylvania states "I am a sister of Jane Kingston. Jane Kingston was married to John Beatty and they lived together as man & wife until the death of John Beatty, which occurred in Philadelphia Pa. Between thirty & forty years ago. James Beatty was a son of Jane Beatty, now Jane Kingston the claimant." A letter stamped April 18, 1892: 125 Howard St. Detroit Mich April 11, 92 Hon. John Wanemaker, Washington, D. C. Dear Sir, I write at the insistence of Mrs. Jane Kingston, an old lady and a member of my church, who seems to think that if you knew she was an applicant for a pension, she would have no trouble in getting it. I have suggested to her that you are too busy to look after such matters, but she seems so anxious for me to write you, that I take the liberty to comply. It seems that her son, who would now be her support, was a member of your Sunday School in Philadelphia on 22nd and South Sts. His name was James Beatty, and the mother seems to think that you cannot have forgotten her James. He went to the war, was wounded, and died in a hospital in Chattanooga Tenn. The mother remarried again, but her husband soon died. She is now without relatives in this country and with very limited means. Her pension claim, which has received no attention, is Jane Kingston, mother of James Beatty, late of Co. "F" 14th Regiment of Michigan Infantry and no. 429,958. This letter may at least suggest to you the confidence and esteem with which some of the poor whom you tried to help in years past hold you in remembrance. 3. William Beaty, Co "B" 78th Illinois Infantry, mother Elizabeth (application #284,975) On June 9, 1881 Elizabeth Beatty aged 58 filed a mother's claim for Pension; she was a resident of Adams County, Illinois. She states that she is the mother of William Beatty who enlisted at Marcelline, Illinois on August 12, 1862 in Company "B" of the 78th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the war or rebellion and who was "killed at battle of Jonesboro Georgia, September 1, 1864 having received gun shot wounds or balls in breast or vitals, was carried off the field and died shortly afterward." She further states that she was married to the father of the soldier on August 8, 1841 at Marcelline, Illinois. Her husband was unable to support her family due to age and infirmity. At the death of William Elizabeth had two children under the age of 16: George Perry Beatty, born Dec. 3, 1849 and Frederick Beatty born Feb. 27, 1858. William Beatty and William Jenkins are witnesses to the signature of Elizabeth Beatty. In June of 1881, Rhoda Whitcomb states that "she is well acquainted with George Beaty and Elizabeth Beaty the father and mother of William Beaty who was a Private in Co B 78th Regt Ill Volunteer Infantry, affiant further states that she was personally present at the birth of the said William Beaty which occurred December 27th 1842." A certified copied of the marriage of George Beaty and Elizabeth Huberling shows that they married August 8, 1841 in Adams County, Illinois. William Jenkins and William Miller of Adams County state that they were in the same company as William and "saw the dead body of said William Beaty." Isaac Lee of Adams County, the attorney appointed by Elizabeth Beatty to prosecute her claim writes the following letter: Important Hon Commissioner of Pensions Washington D. C. Claim for Pension Elizabeth Beatty, mother Wm Beatty, Co. B. 78th Reg Ill Infantry. Dear Sir, I desire particularly that your attention be directed to this claim as one that after I had learned the facts I did not want sent to your office. The old Gentleman and Lady who made this claim I was informed, after the first paper was made out, is worth in property several thousand $10,000. I immediately wrote to these claimants stating what I had learned, told them I had withheld the claim, and requested them to call and get the papers, and the money they had paid me to cover expenses and that I could not send it if such was the fact. Beaty called on me denied his being worth so much and was angry that I had not "sent in the mother's claim." I then told him if he insisted I would send it but at the same time I would write also what I had been informed and that if it were true his or her claim would be rejected. I have since made inquiry from credible persons and do believe that he is worth from 3,00 to $15,000 and therefore do not think that he is entitled to a dollar of pension or the mother as a dependent. Of course I have no right to presume or Judge. But I want you to feel that I will not knowingly allow anything to leave this office that is not in every way worthy of your consideration and favor. The Bounty I think these claimants are entitled to but the pension as I told him I do not. I would not have sent the declaration had I been certain as now that they were not dependent in part. Most Respectfully, Isaac S. Lee William Hightower, Post Master at Marcelline, Illinois writes: Elizabeth Beaty and husband Mr. Beaty has a good farm the same farm he owned in 1864 and at that time as far as I know enjoyed reasonable good health and had a comfortable support for his family, it has always been about as it is now including 1864, good. He is a man in good standing here in comfortable circumstances and beyond want. 1850, Ursa, Adams Co., Illinois, p 314 George Beaty 34 TN Elizabeth 21 PA William 8 Ill Charles A. 5 Ill Rosealtha 3 Ill George P. 1 Ill 1860, Lima, Adams Co., Ill. p 377 Geo Beatty 43 farmer $4,000; $1,000, TN Elizabeth 36 TN William 17 Ill Charles 14 Ill Rosealtha 12 Ill George P. 10 Ill Frederic 2 Ill 1870, Lima Twp., Adams Co., Ill p249A George Batey 53 $4000, $1058 TN Eliz. 47 PA George 20 Ill Ford 12 Ill 1880 Lima, Adams Co., Ill p204D George Batey 63 TN, TN, TN Elizabeth Batey 56 PA, PA, PA Fredreic Batey 22 IL, TN, PA Laurel Baty, L252
