McClelland, Samuel J., Company "F" 10th & Company "F" 58th Indiana Infantry; widow Julia Batey (Certificate # 550,091) and minor's certificate #550,092, Julia Batey guardian. This is a rather long file-I did not copy much of it because the Batey name appears only because of the second marriage of Julia McClelland to Thomas O. Batey. On Sept. 12, 1916 Julia Batey applied for a remarried widow's pension. She states that she is 70 years old and was formerly the widow of Samuel J. McClelland who was a Private in Company "F" 10th & Company "F" 58th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. Julia Halsted and Samuel J. McClelland were married on November 22, 1866 in Boone County, Indiana and neither had been married previously. A certified copy of the marriage record is in the file. Samuel J. McClelland died in 1875 at Eagletown, Indiana. Samuel had one child, Mary Myrtle McClelland born September 20, 1871. Julia McClelland remarried on June 13, 1878 to Thomas O. Batey in Hamilton County, Indiana. A certified copy of the marriage license is in the file. Thomas Batey died April 5, 1916 at Wilsall, Montana. A previous application had been filed by Julia in 1891; she was 45 years old at that time and a resident of Vermillion, Illinois. On October 16, 1916, W. C. Vance and Elizabeth Vance of Hamilton County, Indiana state: "We have known Julia Batey nearly all our lives and we know personally that she has not remarried since the death of her last husband Thomas O. Batey and we also know that her last husband Thomas O. Batey was not in the service of the U. S. Army or Navy. W. C. Vance is a Brother-in-law of claimant Julia Batey and his wife is a sister of claimant." A copy of the Death Certificate of Thomas O'Coner Batey is in the file. It gives his date of birth as Sept. 21, 1841 and his age at death as 74 years, 7 months, 14 days; he died on April 5, 1916 in Wilsall, Pack County, Montana. Thomas O. Batey was born in England. His father's name was John Batey and his mother's maiden name was Marjorie Robinson. Both of his parents were also born in England. His occupation is listed as Minister. Thomas O. Batey was buried April 7, 1916 at Livingston, Montana. On June 23, 1898 Mary M. McClelland a resident of Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana, aged 26 years filed a declaration for a minor's Pension. She states "she is the only child ever born to Samuel J. McClelland now living, and the only child living at the soldier's death; that she was born Sept. 20, 1871 and that her father Samuel J. McClelland died May 25, 1876. She also states "about July 1891, the mother of this claimant Julia Beatey, made application for pension for this claimant as her guardian, which claim was given 521,530. This claimant respectfully asks that this application be considered in connection with said declaration filed by her mother as guardian, and in connection with her mother's claim which has been filed for many years." Mary McClelland states in an affidavit dated July 5, 1898 "I can not remember but very little concerning my above named soldier father, except something concerning his remains after they were placed in the casket for burial and I remember something of being called to his death bed. I have a family Bible before me which belongs to my step-father [Thomas O. Batey] and has been in his possession ever since he married my mother. I have seen a date on the Bible in print at the bottom of page 4, under the heading of "introduction", which results as follows: "London, August, 1861." In said Bible I find my name recorded M. Myrtle McClelland, born Sept. 20, 1871. It has been there ever since I lived with my step-father, it is in my step-father's handwriting. I think it was put there about the time he married my mother." On June 28, 1898 Martha E. Harmon, aged 57 and James Harmon, aged 47 residents of Zionsville, Boone County, Indiana state "we were well and personally acquainted with Samuel McClelland in his life time, we know that he died about May 25, 1876 and that he was buried at Pleasant Hill Graveyard southwest of Zionsville about 4 miles. We have this day visited his grave and find a tombstone erected on the same which was put there in our judgment more than twenty years ago, by his widow. It is a flat stone about 2 ½ feet high, we found the following inscription on it Gone Home Samuel McClelland Died May 25, 1876 Age 38 years 3 months and 20 days Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." On June 28, 1898 Christian Long, aged 74, and Mary Long, aged 69, both residents of Indianapolis, Indiana state "we knew the above named dead soldier when he was quite a young man before the war. We knew his wife Julia whose maiden name was Hallsted, ever since she was a small girl, in fact all her life. We know that they were married at our home at Zionsville Ind. Nov. 22, 1866.We know the widow remarried about two years later to a man by the name of Thomas Batey a Methodist preacher. We know there was two children born to the soldier and wife who are older than Mary Myrtle and both died before their father did." 1880 Helt, Vermillion, Indiana p89A Thomas O. A historical sketch from the History of Bond and Montgomery Counties, Illinois, Edited by William Henry Perrin and Published in 1882 follows the pension information. On October 25, 1890 William A. Beatty, a resident of Raymond, Montgomery Co., IL filed a Declaration For Invalid Pension under the Act of June 27, 1890, stating that he was enrolled on June 21, 1864 as a Private in Company 'I', 26th KY Infantry. He was honorably discharged at Louisville, KY on June 10, 1865. He was partially unable to earn a support by reason of catarrh and bronchitis, which said disabilities were not due to vicious habits and that he had never applied for pension. On May 13, 1891 a Board of Surgeons located in Litchfield, IL stated that William A. Beatty was entitled to a disability rating. On the same date, Beatty certified that he had been in no military or naval service since June 10, 1865. On November 24, 1891, Beatty filed a second Declaration For Invalid Pension adding the name of his commander, a Captain William Knight and stating that he was honorably discharged at Salisbury, NC on July 10, 1865. He stated that he was disabled as follows. While on march from Wilmington, NC to Salisbury, NC about the month of March 1865 he was detailed to carry a medical knapsack, which was very heavy, and marching through the swamps with wet feet and clothing he contracted rheumatism. On December 14, 1891, Beatty testified again as to his disability. On April 28, 1892, a pension of $8 was approved. On May 16, 1892, Beatty applied for an increase in pension stating that he believed the pension of $8 per month was too low and not in accordance with the extent of his disability and that his disability has increased rendering it more difficult for him to perform manual labor. On May 5, 1905, an increase in pension to $10 per month was approved. This was after a series of applications for increase were filed over a period of 13 years. On February 3, 1909, an increase in pension to $12 per month was approved under the Act of February 6, 1907. On June 10, 1913, a new schedule of pension amounts was established as follows: $14 per month from November 1, 1912 $16 per month from January 29, 1913 $20 per month from January 29, 1917 $24 per month from January 29, 1922 Later laws allowed for increased pension amounts and William A. Beatty was receiving $72 per month at the time of his death on October 1, 1927. ****** >From the History of Bond and Montgomery Counties, Illinois, Edited by William Henry Perrin and Published in 1882: ZANESVILLE TOWNSHIP William A. More Lineage 39 Census Data: I must confess that I have never obtained copies of the census listings for the family of my great-grandfather, John Clinton Beatty, son of James Lewis Beatty/Beaty and Ann Maria Wilcox. My great-aunt, Hazel (Cowles) Beatty, family historian until 1989, had census listings that she copied in her own handwriting before the advent of copy machines, but I never noticed before that she did not copy all of the information! Now, it has become necessary that I round up those census reports, because I have met a man via e-mail, who is wondering if our Arthur Beaty, son of John Clinton "Clint" Beatty and Sarah Jane "Jennie" Haggerty, could have been his grandfather. It seems that the woman carrying his grandfather's unborn son did not want to marry Arthur Beatty, but later, she married a man with the last name of Fredrick, and Mr. Fredrick adopted the son. When the man told me a few months ago that his grandfather, Arthur Beatty, lived and died in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, I was thinking that it could not be our Arthur, because I believed my family, when they told me that he went back to Walkerton, Indiana, and that he married a woman by the name of Louise or Gertrude Rice. Now, I am not sure if our Arthur even married Louise "Gertrude" Rice. According to the man who is a grandson of an Arthur Beatty, their family had heard that Arthur did marry and had some children. People who were related to the mother of Arthur Beatty's son, who was later adopted by Mr. Fredrick, lived in Belle Center, Logan County, Ohio. I looked at the hand-copied census pages, and this is what I saw: our Arthur died in Grand Rapids! So, I took a couple of trips to the library last week to get copies of as many census listings as I could find, and it was a real ye-opener! All these years, our whole family has insisted that all 12 children were born in Claybanks, Oceana Co., MI, excluding Arthur. We have always known that Arthur was the only one born in Walkerton, St. Joseph County, IN, possibly while they were visiting relatives. Since the family of John C. Beatty and his wife Sarah Jane "Jennie" (Haggerty) were in the same township and county during the 1900 and the 1910 census, it could mean that the last two or three children were born in Manistee County. It could also mean that John Clinton Beaty was working someone else's farm, and they went back home to the second log house that John built in Claybanks Twp., Oceana Co., MI whenever a baby was going to be born. It could also mean that they were visiting during the 1900 census, as well as the 1910 census. None-the-less, I cannot find the family of John Clinton "Clint" Beatty and his wife Sarah Jane "Jennie" in the 1920 or the 1930 census, and we have always believed that all of the children were born in Oceana County. I have tried soundex and not putting a state or county, so their name must have been really spelled wrong, or they skipped giving info for a couple of census enumerations! ***** 1900, 12th U.S.Census, Maple Grove Twp., Manistee Co., MI, Enumerated 08 June 1900, District No. 40, Sheet No. 4, Enumerator, Robert E. Pepperman. The Beatys from 1840 on down are from L-139. Also, the Andrew Beaty in Cooper Co., Missouri. He is the same as the one in Morgan Co. in 1840. This Andrew Beaty was married to Jane/Jean Maddox in Floyd Co., Kentucky. See Marvin Beaty's website for this entire family.
