Information confirmed by Elizabeth Ann Beaty Walton through personal knowledge - he is my father. History as told by Nugent to his sister Norma Mae Beaty Crye. Some of Nugents recollections was of Hamilton, TX. I was born in Ft. McKavett in 1916, but I remember going to school the first time in Hamilton. We lived there on the Leon River about ten miles from Hamilton. I remember walking to school the first year. And during the first year I remember one time there was snow on the ground, and it was cold as the duce. Me and Iva went to school there, and Iva and I walked down the road at least two miles and maybe three, I guess. We got to school and I was about froze to death. I remember that and the teacher. We had this old pot bellied heater, and it had a big shield aroudn it, a tin shield throwed the heat out over the room. All the school had coal to burn, and around the stove it would get red hot. The shield was probably to keep the kids away from the stove, and of course the tin got hot and more evenly distributed the heat around the room. I was in bad shape, I guess, cause the teacher started slapping me and put a coat around me then got me up close to the fire. And I got the cramps. I got warm too quick and I got the dearn cramps. I thought I was going to die. But I recall walking to school quite a bit. I recall that about that school. Nugent remembered reading a story about that school. It had to be that school. There was an Indian raid, before I started going to school, some years before. The story was in the TRUE WEST STORIES, and it told about that little school outside Hamilton. He said, It's bound to be the same school that I went to. They said that teachers took the kids and made them crawl under the building - the Indians came. It's been a while back. But, the Indians left and nobody was harmed. We ahd to carry water from a well out in the pasture, oh about 200 or 300 yards. I remember we used to have a fit about who was going to get the water and bring it to school and put it in those old wood barrels for drinking water. And I remember the first graduation, I guess it was. I can't recall what we done, but seems like we had a Maypole where we walked around it with crepe paper. Or, whatever it was hanging down that pole. And the kids walked around it in and out. That was during the graduaiton that night. That's about all I can recall about the school. I remember me and Iva at that old seciton house right on the river. Our house was the railroad section house. It was about 150 yards to the river and mama and dad wouldn't let us go down there to fish by ourselves. They told us we had to stay away from the river. So me and Iva went down there one time, and we caught us a grasshopper and got us a line fixed. And we cut us a willow pole and stuck it in the bank. Throwed the line out in the river under the bridge. We had an old pumper there. We had an old pump house - He lived in Hico, TX. I don't remember his name, but I think he was a one armed man, the best I remember. He had a little trickle of water. He pumped the water up to the tower where the train stopped to water every day. And he had a little hole in the back of that place and it drained off in the river. I remember them old Model T's. You'd slow up and the magneta furnished the electricity for your running and the faster you ran the brighter the lights would get, and if you got too fast it would blow the bulb out. I blowed a many a head light bulb. You'd have to slow up at night. Nugent related the above history to his sister Norma aftger he had had his stroke. Nugent liked sports and liked to hunt and fish. The handle he had as a CB radio ham was Buckshot. What more can one say than that. He was especially fond of going to the river with his brothers and sisters and his wife or other members of the family. He was smaller in stture than his brothers, probably about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was dark complected with brown eyes and dark hair. When one looks at the pictures of his uncles they can readily see that he favored his dads brother, Marvin. Nugent spent some time in the CCC's as a young man. When he left McGregor, he drove the truck in which we rode. He left behind his first sweetheart, Gracie Gilliland, better known as "Sweetie". He worked at Sloan's Feed store after his marriage to Elva. He was employed later by Kimballs Wholesale Grocery in Del Rio. He was in management later on in his life for the Fast Food Shrotstops. That is where he was working when he had his stroke which left him paralized on the Left side. Nugent had several heart attacks during his lifetime but survived them all but the last one when he lived in San Antonio, TX. Nugent was loved by famiy and friends alike. He doted on the special atgtention he always recieved from Elva. She took good care of him. He was a diabetic from early manhood, and he probably owed his long life to his wifes specialized care. It grieved him that his health problems would not allow him to serve his country in World War II as his three brohers had done. Nugent was a good and gentle man, although stern at times with his children. He was faithful to all whom he loved. He could be counted on when needed by family. He paid his debts and was honest in his dealings with his fellow man. He was baptized a Baptist and attended church for some time while he worked for Kimballs. Elva was shrot and blue eyed. She fought a battle all her life with the "Cookie Monster". She is talented and smart. She is a very capable artist and likes to keep the crochet needles dancing. One always felt loved and wanted when they visited her home. Visitors never left her home hungry. Told by Norma Mae Beaty Crye. She was short, probably about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches tall. She kept her small figure in shape with a corset in her senior years. She was a good homemaker and arose early to see that the chores were taken care of. She liked listening to the early day radio soap operas, such as Maw Perkins and Stella Dallas, as her nimble fingers crocheted a thing of beauty. She saved buckets of eggs at Easter time for her grandchildren and made multi-colored ones for the small fry to hunt after they had been hidden by the elders. Walter Simpson was also short and on the hefty side all his life. He liked going to the pool hall and gambled many happy hours away there. He was good at his craft, for he came home with the proverbial bacon. In his last days in Austin, he liked to 'con' the members of the family into playing with him, the game called agrivation. They lost their precious daughter of one of the simple child hood diseases, when they lived in Junciton, TX. At some point in time, they built a home at 301 East Third Street. They had moved to Del Rio in the intervening years where they lived many of them north of town on Hiway 90 East. They sold all their belongings and spent the remainder of their lives near their daughter, Etta Mae, in an apartment in Austin, TX. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Burial: 26 Aug 1958, Memorial Cemetary, Austin, Texas Record Change: 17 Jun 2004 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 108. Notes on Etta Lee Beaty Notes History by Norma Mae Beaty Crye Etta Beaty Williams was short and of medium build. She had the blue eyes of her father and short wavy hair. She was a very gifted lady who enjoyed the beautiful things in life. She surrounded herself with order and never did anything unless she tried, with all her being, to achieve perfection. She was a good cook and homemaker. All who came to her home feasted on her wonderful home cooked cuisine. If nothing was readily available, she could kill and dress a chicken with the best of chefs. She once said that there was no difference between love for child and love for grandchildren or great grandchildren. There was great wisdom in her words. Etta lost one of her eyes early in life due to the difficult delivery of her first baby. Her strong spirit never let this be a liability to her or her family. She read and crocheted and did all the other fine tasks that go into the making of a good 'Homemaker'. Jessie Williams was a great man. If any could meet the criteria of meekness, it shall be the ones like him who will fit the bill. He was a hard worker who tried to win his families approval in all that he did. He was a blue-collar worker, as most of his contemporaries, in whom hte cliche 'True Blue' and the 'Salt of the Earth' appropriately fit. Their daughter, Lucile, was always pretty and likes to be well groomed at all times. She has a rare gift for art in almost any field one can name. She sews beautifully and meets anyones expectations of the finest. Her art work in oils, acrylics and water colors is in great demand. They have won her many blue ribbons in the art shows in the surrounding communities. She took care of her mother and father as long as humanly possible. She is now doing the same for her good husband who had a stroke. Mark was a credit to his profession as a career soldier in the Army. He was in the calvary and won many trophies and ribbons for excellence in horsemanship. He met, loved, and married his true love at a very tender age. They have raised a nice family to whom any could point with pride. Have e copy of 1930 census Del Rio, Val Verde, TX where Etta Lee was shown as age 44, married to Jesse Lee Williams also age 44, who was a freighter in the transfer business, and had a daughter Lucile who was age 12. He was the nineth child of John Patrick Beaty and Mary Thomas Wilhelm. He was one of thirteen children who was born to this strong and gifted family. Daddy was known as "Bee" to family members, and later in life he was called "Pete" Beaty by his friends. His father was an old time Methodist Minister as well as a farmer. Daddy's father was known near and far for his powerful and stirring sermons. His mother was an exceptional homemaker. Their doors were always open, and the pot continually boiled for their many interesting visitors. Traveling gospel preachers, of all denominations, found a haven of comfort in their home. Daddy used to exchange notes with his childhood sweetheart, my mother, Vina Mae Wadsworth. Dad's sister, Ethel, played cupid for their clandestine love affair. She was emissary by carrying the love notes to mom and dad after they had hidden them in an old hollow log. Grannie Beaty was a dark headed, dark eyed brunette, and a bery beautiful woman. She was extremely strong willed and had a firey temper. She most likely picked up the genes of her Jackson forebearers. Grandpaw Beaty was stocky, good looking, and blue eyed, with light brown hair. Most of the Beaty children appear to exemplify the Beaty side of the family in appearance. Daddy was no exception. He had the same square and stuborn jaw line of his progenitors. Mom once said that dad's hair was mousy gray colored when he was young. He had his father's steel blue eyes and a strong muscular frame of five feet nine inches tall. He fell in love with his childhood sweetheart. When he was 18 years old and she was 15, they eloped in Comanche, TX on the 15 April 1913. They became the parents of four sons and four daughters. In order of birth was Iva Pearl, Eddie Nugent, Elbert Wayne, Otha DeWitt Norma Mae, Harold Eugene (Preacher), Hazel Monette adn Joyce Virginia. Mom's beautiful brunette coloring and dad's predominant Irish genes blended in a melting pot appearance in all their children. Some were tall and some short. Some brown haired and some very dark headed. Likewise were their eyes. Iva, Joyce and Hazel each had dad's blue eyes, while Nugent, Wayne, Otha, Eugene and I had the brown eyes of our mother. Daddy spent his firstyear or so farming, then he and mama got a job in a candy factory at Brownwood TX. Their mode of transportation was by bicycle. Since no self respecting lady woud straddle a bike, Mom sat in front of dad on the main frame while dad pumped the two wheeler. In the twenties dad worked as secton formean for the Cotton-Belt RR in Hamilton and Oglesby. Joe Draper, of Oglesby TX told me several years ago, that they made home brew in the tool shed behind the section house on the RR at Oglesby. That was done in their more prosperous times. They capped it for a time until they realized that it was being consumed as fast as it came off. During the depression years dad was unemployed and suffered the agonies of deprivation as millions of others. He made boot leg whiskey to augment the income of his large family. Later in McGregor dad rigged u a hot pit bath in which to scald pigs as they were slaughtered. He did this for others as well as the family. I shall never forget watching as they raised a goat high in the air as it bleated out "mama" as clearly as a child. This testifies of his creative ideas and abilities ot keep his family from starvation. In McGregor, on the 1st of January, 1933, they lost their beautiful little 3 year old daughter, Hazel, of pneumonia. I stood in the room as she drew her last gasping breath. I also lay in the same room while she was born. I 'm sure that Aunt Etta and mama thought that AI was fast asleep on a cot as Hazel made her entrance into the world. It was in the 30's that dad sent mom and his children to Del Rio to stay for a time with his sisters. We stayed on hi way 90 for a few months with Aunt Birdie and Uncle Walter Simpson. Later we stayed in town with Aunt Etta and Uncle Jesse Williams. Nugent was yet in his teens and was the one who drove the old truck in which we traveled. He left behind his teen aged sweetheart, Gracie Gilliland, better known as "Sweetie" to Iva and all her friends. He ventured forth as duty called by his family. It seemed a very long journey to Otha, Preacher and I who rode atop the household goods in the back of the old truck. At sometime in the intervening years, we moved into a rented house down the road form Uncle walt's and Aunt Birdie's. Across the road was the windmill and water tank. We used to have to bring the cow across the road from the pasture. One day they didn't get along quite as fast as they should have. so a soldier form Ft. Clark, in a fast moving auto, totaled out our milk supply. Dad worked for some time as a butcher in the Piggly Wiggly store on Main St. in Del Rio. At the time we lived on 3rd St in the old house that Uncle Walt Simpson had built many years before. The house was just across from the Osgood place. Many years later Robert and I bought the house, and we moved mom's trailer into the back lot. Mama and Daddy and family moved from there to the Moegelin acreage and built a tent like home. It was framed like a house but was covered in parafin treated ducking. Dad applied parafin to water proof the material. One of the most exciting wvents, while we lived there was when a rattle snake stole into the house. It was also while we lived there that they lost their daughter, Iva Pearl. She was so young and the light of her brothers and sisters eyes. They recieved word by telegram that Iva was sick, so Nugent, mama and daddy left right away for McGregor. She was already dead when they arrived thereon the 6 November 1936. She was still living with her husband, Jack Polston, and their two small children, Bernice and Gladys. Mama and daddy got in touch with the Moegelins and asked them to bring the rest of the children to McGregor for the funeral. But times were hard and Bill and Etta Mae didn't feel that they could make the long and arduous trip. Thus our dear sister was put to rest without us being able to attend her funeral. How grieved Otha and I were. Preacher was probably too young at the time for him to know a lot about what was happening. She was such a special sister to all of us, and we lved her very much. Bernice had jsut started to school and her mother had made her such pretty dresses, so she could change her twice a day. gladys, who was younger has few memories of her mother. What a tragedy for this young husband and family. Jack never got over the loss of his young wife even though he married a nice young woman by the name of Mildred Norman. It was about 1937 or 1938 that dad started cutting cedar posts for the surrounding ranchers. He eventually bought him a couple of trucks and hired two men to help him. One of the young men, Carl Farless, who seemed like family was afflicted with epilepsy. The hired hands lived with us when they made their many visits home form the cedar brakes. The ranches, which the cedar was on, were in the Nueces River area outside Brackettville. The family helped dad with these endeavors. Otha helped with the cutting, and I helped by carrying the posts through the undergrowth to the truck. Preacher helped at times also. I don't ever remember a time when I worked harder than when I had to carry the hevy poles up and down the brushy ravines. I would often balance them on my shoulder as I had seen Daddy and Otha do. It was about 1944 that the family lost all their belongings from a fire which quickly razed the dwelling. Dad built the house from the ground up. He went to the tankform, which was behind our house, and pulled out of the rubble the oil soaked 1X12's. When the house ignited into flames, it became a raging inferno. The home was located just down the road from Bill Moegelins house on Highway 90. After the house burned, they moved into the Moeglein place which Otha had purchased. Eventually mom and dad moved to Baytown, TX where he and Wayne pursued a vocatin of fishing in the coastal waters. Under the pressure of the family who were concerned with daddys safety, mom and dad moved back to Del Rio to the East AHighway 90 home. The house was situated just west of the old Bill Moegelin place. Our family built the place in their declining years. It was an attractive, lumber frame with white asbestos shingles. Nugent now owned this acreage after having bought it from Otha. It was a comfortable house but had deteriorated some what while it was rented. Elva and I helped them to remodel after they returned. We decided to paint the living room pink. While w e were mixing colors we kept adding red to the small swatch we were doing for a sample. When we got through we had the most shocking rose pink any one had ever seen. It was blinding and almost as bad from the street as from the interior. Poor mom and dad had to live in that awful living room until they sold the house. It never occurred to us to repaint it. Dads favorite color was orchid, so we painted their bedroom a beautiful hue. I guess when dad got tired of the living room he could go to the bedroom to rest his eyes. Nugent sold his house to Sheriff Richter. That was when dad and om moved to the old house just below our farm. We owned fifteen acres that lay between the Cinegas Creek and the Rio Grande River. Dad did much of the farming, and one year we had several acres of tomatoes which put on pounds of tomatos to the vine. They were the talk of the Quemado Valley farmers. One farmer came out to the frm to try to fin out hwat we didto make such a profuse crop. We had put about a table spoon of phosphorus to each plant. Then we prayed for the devine intervension of a kind creator to help us. The farm prospered under the hands of my able and capable father and thsoe of my husband Robert. The family loved to visit the farm where they enjoyed a feasting from mamas ample table. They were able to follow their favorite past time of fishing in the murky watgers of the Rio Grande. Their house and ours were ocfortably situated on the banks of the Cinegas Creek. We had an irregation pump on the creek to nourish the dry sandy loam. I planted yellow and orange varigated canna flowers on the banks of the creek and they rewarded us with their profuse blooms in summer months. Eddie Don, my sister Joyce's son who lived with his grandparents and our son Larry, loved playng on the banks of the creek. They spent many days in the company of their best friend, Don Tody. Don Todt was tghe son of an aor force officer at Laughlin AFB and a member of the L.D.S. Chruch to which Robert and I belonged. While living in this choice country setting, my father passed away on the 19th of Feb 1962. I noticed him holding his left arm for several days as though in pain. It is now obvious to me that his heart was in trouble. He had a sick spell, which no one took too seriously, and then a brief time later he had a full fledged heart attack. He continued to suffer some heart damage with each small occurrence. He spent about two weeks in the hospital before he passed away. Gone was my father but not forgotten Of his flesh and blood, I was begotten Tears flooded my eyes, as I felt the grief Consolation was a stranger and there was no relief. It's a pity and shame we rarely share our love 'Til it is too late and our kin called above. Written by Norma Mae Beaty Crye 1984 Her address in '84 P.O. Family records in possession of Birdie Idella Simpson. Birth, marriage and death records Tombstone records Census Records John Patrick Beaty, who was born 19 October 1855 in Jackson Co, TX, was born to a Methodist couple by the name of Edward Beatty and Sarah Jane Pearce. Edward and Sarah Jane, daughter of Jesse Pearce and Nancy Williams, were married 11 June 1840 in Jackson Co, TX. (Marr. Recds. of Early Texas 1824-1846, Ft. Worth Genealogical Society 1971) John Patrick's father, Edward Beatty, was a large land holder near Edna, Jackson Co, TX. He managed his huge acreage with the help of his many negro slaves. He may be found in the 1850 slave schedule census with his many blacks who belonged to him. They are designated by sex and age only. It was said that Edward Beatty was also a shoe cobbler, and that he made the families shoes. John Patrick was the fourth child of seven children. He was of medium to stocky Scotch-Irish stature, good looking with a regal bearing. He was about 5 ft 9 or 10 inches tall. He had kind steel blue eyes and had the respect of his contemporaries including those of his family members. He was married 18 Jan 1877 in Jackson County to Mary Thomas Wilhelm, daughter of Jeremiah Monroe Wilhelm and Emilie Jane Rogers. Willard Beaty, one of his sons, was about 6 weeks old when John Patrick and Mary Thomas moved in 1888 from Bell Co, TX to Comanche Co, TX. There were three families who moved to Comanche at the same time. They were Matilda (mattie) and Will Wilhelm, Harriett, and Edward Beatty and Mary Thomas (Mollie) and John Patrick. John Patrick became interested in the ministry and was ordained a Methodist Minister when he was about 28 years of age. One of his first churches was in Milam Co. Others, where he was pastor, were in Indian Creek, Lampkin, Pettit, Hebron, Fellowship and Harmony Communities in Comanche Co. Ministers, at that time, usually had two or three churches which were commonly known as their charges. They were evangelists, and in John's era, they traveled by horse and buggy. John Patrick often traveled when it was very cold and carried a bottle of hot Peppersauce to drink to keep him warm. He retired from the ministry when he was in his sixties and moved to Brown Co, TX. John was an active Mason as well and serving on school boards as trustee. Two of John Patricks sons, Willard and Willis followed in their fathers footsteps and became preachers. Willard was ordained a Methodist Minister, and Willis became a Pentacostal Preacher. Willard stopped preaching and moved to Ardmore, OK. where he was a police guard in a prison. In 1921, Willis Beaty was connected with The United Pentecostal Church in Zephyr, TX and he was also a pastor in 1957. They lived in the Harmony community, where the PFJC Pentecost later became the United Pentecostal. It was the 21st of March 1921 when John and Mary's farm home was razed by fire and destroyed all they owned. This resulted in them spending their last years living with first one then another of their children. John died in Del Rio, TX on May 26, 1936 while living with his daughter. His daughter and son in law, Birdie and Walt Simpson, lived at the time on Hiway 90 East. Mollie died at the same residence and they are both buried in Del Rio on the same plot with their son, Hilton, who preceeded them in death. Members of Osage Chapter DAR plan to pay tribute to a Revolutionary soldier, Robert Beaty, who died in Pettis County 120 years ago this June. A plaque will be placed on the grave marker at Providence Baptist Church cemetery northeast of Smithton on Highway 135 Sunday afternoon, June 30, at 3 o'clock. Mrs. L. H. Hodges, chapter regent and her committees have planned a service which will include an address by Judge Dimmitt Hoffman, a sketch of Robert Beaty's life and an appropriate color guard ceremony by one of the local war service groups. Robert Beaty's son, Napoleon Beaty, was one of Pettis County's earliest businessmen. He and a relative of his wife, W. L. White, had a store near the Providence church site. Napoleon and his wife, Cornelia F. Beaty, were the parents of five daughters and two sons. The youngest daughter, Glorvinia, was the wife of Adam Ittel, a banker in Sedalia in the 1880s. Col. David Walker Wear of Binghamton, N. Y., is the son of Laura Beaty. His boyhood was spent in Booneville. Descendants of Sally Beaty who married Samuel Tanner are living in Alabama and Texas. Cornelia Beaty was the wife of William Young. A descendant of the marriage of Mary Ann Beaty, who married John C. Cobb, is Mrs. Fred L. Jackson of Mexico, Mo. Robert Beaty married Mary Palmer. William N. Beaty probably married in California, as he was living there at the time of his mother's death in 1890. This is the second Pettis County grave of a Revolutionary soldier to be marked by the Osage Chapter DAR. The other soldier was Benjamin Mason whose grave is in the old Hickory Point cemetery near Green Ridge. The two stone markers at the entrance of Memorial Drive at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia were placed in tribute to Capt. George Cathey and Lt. Adam Calhoun Scott, two Revolutionary War soldiers who died in Pettis County. Their place of burial is unknown. Osage Chapter DAR extends an invitation to the public to attend these services. [I found this clipping in the Surname file at the Alabama Archives in Montgomery, Alabama. A portrait of Robert Beaty accompanies the article-I would be happy to send a scan to any interested researchers. There is another clipping describing the ceremony and stating "His [Robert Beaty's] parents, Edward and Ann Beaty, were in Bedford Co., Pa., (later Huntington County) as early as 1772. They came to America from Ireland or Scotland. They had a family of eight sons and one daughter." Several letters from Mary E. Mason of Athens, Alabama, are also in the file. In one letter she states "Robert Beaty was born in Ireland. I have his traveller's map of Ireland, soiled from use." Mary Mason also included a list of the children of Robert Beaty and Sallie Parrott with their dates of birth and death as well as date of marriage. The Surname file at the Alabama Archives is on microfilm-there are many Beaty clippings-I wish that I had time to copy them all! -Laurel Baty, L252] 87. Sarah E. She had long been in feeble health, and in visiting her old home in Missouri, last summer, hoped as did her many friends, that the change would again restore her to health; but on returning she grew worse, until death relieved her of her sufferings. Now that she has gone from earth, it will ever be a consoling thought to those who loved her, to know that she was fully prepared for the great change, and spoke as calmly of passing away, as though she were starting on a pleasant journey, and we are assured by those who were with her in her last moments, that they have never seen a happier or more triumphant death, and when, just before the final scene, she was asked, "Do you feel that you are nearing your happy home?" she, with a pleasant smile which seemed more Heaven born than of earth, wreathing her face, pointed upwards, where perchance, in the dazzling path, illuminated with a streaming Heavenly light, which alone met her gaze, stood, marshaled the Angelic throng ready to bear her to the portal of the skies-the realms of enduring bliss. Let the stricken husband, whose devotion went even to the brink of the grave, and the six children, who now seeing a vacant chair in the once happy household, feel the truth thrust home, that, "I have no mother now." Be consoled that she has found a Heavenly rest. Let them ever keep fresh and green in their hearts, the sweet memory of her whose love for them knew no bounds, and in her last moments was made to feel that "It is not all of life to live nor of death to die." The triumph was complete - peace and eternal rest secured, and "She who bore the Cross, Now wears the Crown." 1. [BP2000] John Beatty/ Northumberland, PA> Scioto, OH
    2. Donna VanZandt
    3. I ran into this in the early Portsmouth paper and thought others might enjoy the pioneer tale. I've wondered about descendants of that John Beatty (listed in Ohio Wills & Estates to 1850) for many years so even though this is a thirdary source it is interesting and I will put it in a file. Donna L-3 The Portsmouth Times (Portsmouth, OH)-2 August 1873 THE EARLY SETTLEMENT OF SCIOTO COUNTY. (Prepared to be read before the Pioneer Association of Scioto county, by James Keyes) THE FIRST FAMILY IN SCIOTO COUNTY. Samuel Marshall, his wife and four children, were the first to locate and settle permanently in Scioto county. They left Pittsburg in the summer of 1795, and passed down the Ohio as far as Manchester, where they remained until Wayne made his celebrated treaty with the Indians. Mr. Marshall had observed the mouth of the Scioto and the fertile lands on the border of that river as he went down, and as soon as it was distinctly understood that there would be no more Indian wars, he immediately returned up the river in the same boat he moved down in, and landed about three miles above the mouth of the Scioto, opposite the mouth of Tygart's Creek, where he built the FIRST LOG CABIN In Scioto county. His family consisted besides himself and wife, of Polly Marshall, Sabina Marshall, Jesse Marshall, and Samuel Marshall, Jr. This was in the latter part of February or first of March, 1796. Nancy, the eldest daughter, was married to William Rollins, and came the next year. Samuel Marshall, Jr. and Sabina, who married a Mr. Pyles, are living yet in Madison township, the oldest inhabitants of Scioto county at this time. When Mr. Marshall built his house just above Lawson's Run, it was the only house on either side of the river between Gallipolis and Manchester. They were not without neighbors very long. THE SECOND FAMILY To locate in this county came up from Manchester also, in a few months afterwards, and settled a little further up the river. John Lindsey and wife and eight children constituted the second family. The names of the children were Beulah, who was married to George Edgington, John H. Lindsey, William Lindsey, Oliver Lindsey, Lemuel? Lindsey, Peter Lindsey, James Lindsey, and Sally Lindsey, who married Samuel Perry. These two families consisted of grown up sons and daughters, and of course, they had to marry one another, as they had no choice outside of the two families. Consequently John A. Lindsay and Polly Marshall concluded the best thing they could do for themselves was to get married. How that was done where there was no organized society, no court to grant license, no preacher or justice of the peace to marry them, does not appear, but, at all events, John A. Lindsay and Polly Marshall were the first couple married within the limits of the county. Whether they were as happy as they might have been if they had had a large circle of acquaintances to choose from, history is silent. But they built a cabin near where the Scioto furnace stands, and reared a large family, as all respectable married folks are expected to do under similar circumstances. Mr. Marshall's youngest child was five years old when he came here, but thinking that would not do for a new country, his wife gave birth to a daughter shortly after they came, and Fanny Marshall, as she was called, was the FIRST CHILD BORN IN SCIOTO COUNTY. Fanny grew up to be a fine young woman, and married George Shunkwilder, raised a family, and died a few years ago at an advanced age. There are several of Jesse Marshall's children living in and around Sciotoville, and othe descendants of the Marshall family living in different parts of the country. THE SECOND ARRIVAL Of settlers in Scioto county, who came to stay, consisted of five families, who came from Northumberland county, Pennsylvania, they built a boat at Redstone, on the Monongahela and floated down the Ohio and landed in the mouth of Little Scioto on the 10th day of August, 1796. The names of these were Isaac Bonser, Uriah Barber, John Beatty, William Ware, and Ephraim M'Adams. This last did not stay long, but went on down to Cinncinatti. Of the other four families, some of their desendants are scattered through the county to this day. Mr. Barber went down to what was called Old Town, west of the Scioto, and lived near where George Davis' distillery is. Mr. Bonser built a house on the east side of the Little Scioto, which was the third house built in the county. He also cleared and fenced a small field that fall and winter, and the next year being 1797, raised THE FIRST CROP OF CORN IN SCIOTO COUNTY. That crop of corn must have been a welcome harvest to those few isolated families, who were cut off from all intercourse with the outside world, and had no other provisions but such as the woods afforded and their trusty rifles procured for them. Mr. Ward went up the creek and located on Ward's run, a tributary of the Little Scioto. It was not called Ward's Run until he went there. It was the custom of that day, where a creek had no name to give it the name of the first man who went to live on it. Mr. Ward lived there long enough to give his name to the creek, but, unfortunately, got drowned, and was the first man buried in Scioto county. They buried him in the graveyard where the bridge crosses the creek, near the mouth, and it was consequently, the first graveyard in our county. We hear no more of Mr. Ward's family since that time. John Beaty went up towards Wheelersburg and located, but he soon fell a victim to the malaria of the county, and was the first man to die a natural death in Scioto county. His widow was left with four small children in a destitute condition, but, as is always the case in every new country, men are much more numerous than women, and much more necessity existing for entering the state of matrimony. Therefore, she soon married a man by the name of Alexander Burnside, a man who came a short time afterward. Mr. Burnside had some means, and had been distilling on the Monongahela river, and had brought a small copper still down with him. He bought the land where Wheelersburg has since been located. He built THE FIRST HORSE MILL. And the first distillery, on the ground at present occupied by Cranston's woolen factory. He raised his step-children, and one of the girl's married a man by the name of Leary, and one, Susan Beaty, married Joseph Thompson. Alexander Beaty married Ruth Drury for his first wife, and Cecilia Lecroix, by whom he had three children, who are living near Haverhill at this time. Mr. Burnside had three children, Jane, John and Martin. Jane married Pontius Wheeler. Mr. Bonser, seeing the necessity for a mill, in 1798, after being in the county two years, discovered a seat for a mill on a small tributary of the Little Scioto, which he named Bonser's Run, being the first man to settle upon that stream.

    3. I remember at one time reading about a MARTIN Beat(t)y in northeast Texas, maybe Red River County and he too was a politician. When I discovered that he was not in my line, I sold the book to someone else. Armond ----- Original Message ----- From: "Willie R. 3. I know of, and have driven through, Beattyville in Kentucky but am not aware of other Beatty/Beaty towns in Kentucky. The subject made me curious as to where other Beatty towns might be located. There is a Beatty, Nevada. And there once was a Beaty in Adair County in Missouri, but that's about it as far as I know. Any others? There is also a small Beaty village in Eastern Canada (Quebec?). Beatty Collins (L-071)

    3. Don't forget Beatty, Oregon. It's in the far south near California, and apparently is very small. 3. Donna, Beattyville, KY is the county seat of Lee County KY. If you will go to this link, http://www.beattyville.org/ you can learnr more about Beattyville. It was formed from several counties including Owsley County, which is where Martin Beaty and others settled. Martin was in the Kentucky legislature, and I think his lineage is either 10 or 12 (Edward, progenitor). For a long time it was thought that Martin Beaty was a brother or at least closely related to the Beatys that went on over to Cumberland County KY, and became identified as lineage 2 (later, sub-divided). I found the above link by going to the Kentucky Gen Web site and Owsley County, then subsequently to Lee County by looking on a Kentucky Road map. By the way, I didn't know about another Beattyville, in Greenup County. That's way up there on the south bank of the Ohio River, across the river from Portsmouth, Ohio. Looking at a map of Kentucky, however, I don't find Beattyville or Springville in Greenup County.
