    1. Re: [BP2000] Hunterdon, N.J.
    2. Joe, Thank you for the answer. Is this your lineage?? In the N.J. Marriages 1684-1895 there are 3 listed John, Charles and Catherine (mine) Beaty in Hunterdon, N.J. The dates are so close 1811, 1812, 1817 that I was hoping there was some connection with the families. I am having trouble getting started with any type of research as there does not seem to be any early census listed on ancestry.com for N.J. Also would be good to have more information on L.127 as it is rather abbreviated on BP2000. If this is not your lineage will see if the names with the lineage are still connected with the group. Is this the lineage that has Daniel, the organ maker?? Julie L.39 and ????????

    3. Thank you, my question like always was not very clear. I really wanted to know if the land was in VA. So this is Samuel of L-103. Right? and the land would be in VA or OH? Augusta co., VA grantees May 24, 1771 -Samuel Beaty from Mathew Thompson, Sr. B&S vol. 17 pg. 268 May 24, 1771 -Samuel Beaty from Mathew, Sr. & Rachel Thompson Release vol. 17 pg. 270 Nothing in the grantors so the land became a different county or possibly Wm, John, Samuel and the rest inherited it. They would have been born cir 1740-50 I suspect. Just something to keep in mind if we run into deeds where some of them are selling. I still can't decide if Walter was the father or bro of Samuel. One of Walter's dau's may have been in Cecil co., MD. Folks on ancestry give her to the John who died in Cecil co and left a will. Not certain how common the names John and Esther McCay/McCoy would be. Her age cir 1711 would point to Walter being the father of Samuel Pretty hard to prove. Some of them show a descen Ezek Beatty McCoy in NC and TN but it just all seems to be speculation. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2007 10:06 PM Subject: Re: [BP2000] Old land record Virginia and Donna, This is one of those tidbits of history that fascinate me, so I did a little poking around. Here's what I found. When Augusta Co., VA was created from Orange Co., VA in 1745, it was one of those frontier counties that went west 'forever' and north 'forever,' if you know what I mean. In other words, there was no defined western or northern boundary. Most, perhaps all, of the original colonies had those kind of counties. At that time, 1745, the southwestern part of PA was not part of any PA county boundary. Basically, it was Indian Country. In 1750, PA created Cumberland County out of part of Lancaster County and the southwestern Indian Country. But, the extreme western part of the southern boundary was apparently left up in the air. When the Mason-Dixon line was surveryed between 1763 and 1767, it settled the boundary dispute between Pennsylvania and Maryland, which it was supposed to do. But, even though the surveyors extended the line westward, it really didn't do much to settle the matter of the land in southwestern PA (and it wasn't supposed to - the surveyors just took it upon themselves to extend the line. The Crown was just interested in settling the PA-MD boundary dispute.). In 1773, Virginia actually created a "Western Augusta District," part of which was in southwestern PA. Then, in 1776, VA created three counties in that area. About the same time, PA created a county out there overlaying the VA counties. (Do you see a dispute brewing here?) I guess someone talked some sense into them because in 1786, VA formally terminated county jurisdiction in southwestern PA, the state boundary was accepted along the Mason-Dixon Line, and everybody went home happy (well, except for the Indians). However, I don't think any of this has much to do with Donna's question about Samuel Beaty. It looks to me like someone patented the land in Augusta Co., VA in 1759 and then sold it to Samuel Beaty of York Co., PA in 1771. York Co., PA was far enough east so it wasn't involved in the area dispute described above. So, that's the story as I understand it. 3. Donna, thanks for all your fine research. I believe you must be right on the Montgomery Co., Missouri Beatys of 1830. Now we still have to contend with the Andrew in Saline Co. We'll just have to keep on huntin', won't we? With the name Andrew being so popular in the Beaty/Beatty/Batey, etc. clan, we will probably always be mixing them up. The name Andrew is so definitely Scottish that it will be interesting to see where they finally show up in Scotland. Again, thanks. 3. I was just reading something about this in a history of Frederick Co., VA. Basically, before the Mason-Dixon Line was established, right about the time of the RW, no one was absolutely sure exactly where PA began. I believe Augusta Co. would have been the western area of VA below Pittsburgh, if I'm not mistaken, at the time. You have to watch out for people who lived along the border of PA with MD, of PA with VA, because they could have been in either state. I know I am not understanding something. This is the father of L-103 Benjamin. According to L-78 the Walter of the will below is the father of Samuel. Could there be a reason Walter did not name his 7 yr old grandson, Benj. but just 3 granddau's? 2. Donna VanZandt
    3. This is a MO census I did years ago in IA City from index books (before Ancestry) with the marriage records for MO. The whole idea was to write the L-number on each marriage and family. I have not been too consistent but some have been added. I posted this a long time ago but thought I would re-post it for new members. Donna L-3 1850 MISSOURI CENSUS ADAIR COUNTY Being 1st Dist. 1. [BP2000] Status report on our funds and a request for donations
    2. beatty
    3. Fellow Members of the Beatty Project 2000 and GenMatch, Donations to the Beatty DNA Fund have paid for all or part of the cost of the basic Y 25 DNA tests for some of our cousins who couldn't invest the money but who provided their DNA. The results of those tests have helped to piece together some of the puzzle of our genetic relationships, one to another. Our DNA tests have been on Americans, Canadians, Irish and a few English, but no Scots. We have strong historical evidence that the western Borders area of Scotland is where our earliest ancestors originated, but we don't have any DNA evidence so far to prove or disprove it. We are anxious to obtain results of living descendants of the Beattys (any spelling) who have lived in that area for as long as surnames have existed. Recently some of our Beatty group visited the western Border area of Scotland. We found that the idea of doing DNA tests to establish links to ancestors is new to residents of that area and not considered to be very important. But as a result of that trip we have the possibility of receiving ten sets of cheek swabs from Beattys who live in that area. Those ten are willing to contribute their DNA but probably aren't willing or able to pay for having it tested. We have $729 in the Beatty DNA Fund at this writing -- nearly enough to pay for five Y 25 tests at $148 each - and $89 in the General Fund for the Beatty Surname Project at Family Tree DNA. Donations to augment and replenish either fund would be extremely welcome and helpful as we prepare for this unprecedented opportunity to learn more about our genetic relationships to our ancestors who did not emigrate to Ireland or America. The information from these tests could potentially anchor our understanding of our early roots as well as showing new genetic links among us. We hope you can help. I got excited when I saw records from Buchanan County, MO, 1891-95. I did not see the names that I recongnized. My gg grandfather George W. Beatty, Sr. (b. 17 Jan 1822) lived in St. Joseph, Buchannan County, MO, at that time and died in 1901. He was born in Morgan Co. KY. and married Susan Catharine Dinwiddle in Morgan Co., KY, in 1849. There were eleven children born from 1850 to 1873. Frances J., George W., Jr., William Andrew, James M., Infant (not named), Sarrah Nancy , Charles M., Robert S., Newton S., William Heddens, and my grandmother, Mollie Price. Several of the sons did not marry. I have James M. Beatty married to Laura M. Johns. In your research have you found anything of this family. I only have what was given to me by my mother. Beaty (certificate # 116,576) and J. A. Chilcoat, guardian (minor's certificate #150,694) On April 20, 1868 Mary F. Baty, aged 30 and a resident of Morgan County, Missouri, filed a widow's claim for pension. She is the widow of James Beaty who was a Private in Company "F" commanded by Captain Moore in the 18th Regiment of Iowa Infantry. James Beaty died on April 15, 1864 at Poisoned Springs, Arkansas. Mary's maiden name was Mary Francis Houchen and she was married to James Baty on January 13, 1856 in Morgan County, Missouri. A certified copy of this marriage record is in the file. At the time of James Baty's death he had 2 children under the age of sixteen: James Baty born Oct. 13, 1857 and Cordelia Baty born Sept, 5, 1862. Both children reside in Syracuse, Morgan County, Missouri. A previous application had been filed on March 19, 1867 by Mary Baty in which sates her children are "James Baty or Beattie born June 20, 1857 and Cordelia Baty or Beattie born Dec. 27, 1862 and she further states that she cannot furnish baptismal record of the birth of said children for the reason that none was ever made, and she herewith furnishes the Affd. Of Dr. E. M. Carr who was her attending physician at the time the children were born." An Inventory of the effects of James Beattie dated Camden Ark, Mar. 19, 1864 states that James was 33 years old at his death, a resident of Florence, Missouri and born in the State of Missouri. James Beattie's cause of death is listed on this form as "wounds received in battle." On August 17, 1870 Joshua A. Chilcoat, aged 32 and a residing "near Florence" Morgan County, Missouri files a claim for pension as guardian of the minor children of James Beaty. He states that he married Mary F. Beaty on March 6, 1870; a certified copy of this marriage record is in the file. 3. I truly don't want to step on any toes with this. First a little history about how I became obsessed with L-9. Many years ago (we are talking eons here) my sister and I came to realize that L-185 Wm Alexander Beatty was probably the son of L-3 John. It was totally frustrating to find he had been named as the "unnamed" son of L-9 in DAR records. Probably the unnamed child had died at or shortly after birth. I doubt Sarah forgot the name of her child. He was just not named because he had died very very young. So in order to prove Wm was the son of John of L-3 we had to first disprove he was the son of L-9 John. Posted 2002 (below) -------------------------- Several of the descendants of William Alexander Beatty of L-185 have joined the DAR saying he is the son of John Beaty and Sarah Whaley Beaty of L-9. I would like to prove he is not their son. First using common sense, William Alexander Beatty per census and family ledger was born in 1811 in Harrison county, West Virginia. John Beaty of L-9 married the widow of his brother George Beatty in 1801 in Montgomery Co., KY. In 1819 he filed for a revolutionary war pension in Montgomery County, KY. His widow Sarah filed for pension on her first husband George Beatty and listed all her children with George and John Beatty. None was a William Beatty. The last child was listed as unnamed but normally this is an unnamed child who died at birth. The following is the will of John Beatty of L-9. He names all his children with both his wives. Again there is no William Beatty. William Beatty of L-185 at the time of this will was alive and well in Ohio. He had married in 1832 in Meigs co., OH and in 1840 was on the census in Athens co., OH. I think we have sufficient proof to say he was not the son of John Beatty of L-9. I would like to remove him from the L-9 file. Now to prove he was the son of John Beatty of L-3. Donna L-3 Microfilm # 0252361 Montgomery County, Kentucky Wills Book E page 45 (L-9) In the name of God, Amen. I, John Beatty of Montgomery County and state of Kentucky being weak in body, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life but being of sound mind and perfect memory. Blessed be Almighty God for the same do make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner and form following, that is to say, first I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah Beaty the farm whereon I now live including about one hundred acres with all the appurtenances thereinto belonging and also my two Negroes, one woman named Juner and one boy named Squire together with all my personal estate, household and kitchen furniture to have and to hold for her use and benefit during her natural life, except such things as shall be hereafter named. And secondly to my beloved children which I had by my first wife, to wit: Patsy Adams, Joseph Beaty, Polly Moore, and whereas I have heretofore given to each of them as they married and left me so much of my estate as I think will be their proportionable part, I give unto each of them as first above named one dollar. And thirdly, unto each of my beloved children which I had by my last wife I give and bequeath unto each of them. First unto my son Daniel Beaty, George Beaty, Elizabeth Conley and Cyrene Beaty it is my wish and desire and agreeable to the will each of the four as last named shall have an equal part of all my estate which shall remain at the death of my beloved wife Sarah Beaty, except one bay mare and yearling calf, one cow and calf and two beds and furniture I give and bequeath unto my daughter Cyrene Beaty. Fourthly, I give and bequeath unto Robert Beaty, the son of George Beaty, deceased, one sorrell mare and colt. Also after the death of his mother, which is now my wife Sarah Beaty, he, the said Robert is to have the above named Negro boy named Squire. And if in case the aforesaid Negro boy, Squire, should not come into the possession of said Robert being prevented by death or otherwise, then and in that case he is to have one equal and proportionable part of the land and other property as spoken of at the death of my wife, as above, that is with Daniel and George Beaty, Elizabeth Conley and Cyrene Beaty and not otherwise. And lastly, I declare this to be my last will and testament revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this eighteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two. John Beatty {seal} Signed, sealed and published and delivered by the above named John Beatty to be his last will and testament in the presents of us who have hereunto subscribed each of our names on the day first above written.
