Joe, Thank you for the answer. Is this your lineage?? In the N.J. Marriages 1684-1895 there are 3 listed John, Charles and Catherine (mine) Beaty in Hunterdon, N.J. The dates are so close 1811, 1812, 1817 that I was hoping there was some connection with the families. I am having trouble getting started with any type of research as there does not seem to be any early census listed on ancestry.com for N.J. Also would be good to have more information on L.127 as it is rather abbreviated on BP2000. If this is not your lineage will see if the names with the lineage are still connected with the group. Not certain how common the names John and Esther McCay/McCoy would be. Her age cir 1711 would point to Walter being the father of Samuel Pretty hard to prove. They went to Bartholomew Co., KY, but I believe they may have had relatives in the St. Louis area. I was just reading something about this in a history of Frederick Co., VA. Basically, before the Mason-Dixon Line was established, right about the time of the RW, no one was absolutely sure exactly where PA began. I believe Augusta Co. would have been the western area of VA below Pittsburgh, if I'm not mistaken, at the time. You have to watch out for people who lived along the border of PA with MD, of PA with VA, because they could have been in either state. Fellow Members of the Beatty Project 2000 and GenMatch, Donations to the Beatty DNA Fund have paid for all or part of the cost of the basic Y 25 DNA tests for some of our cousins who couldn't invest the money but who provided their DNA. The results of those tests have helped to piece together some of the puzzle of our genetic relationships, one to another. Our DNA tests have been on Americans, Canadians, Irish and a few English, but no Scots. We have strong historical evidence that the western Borders area of Scotland is where our earliest ancestors originated, but we don't have any DNA evidence so far to prove or disprove it. We are anxious to obtain results of living descendants of the Beattys (any spelling) who have lived in that area for as long as surnames have existed. Recently some of our Beatty group visited the western Border area of Scotland. We found that the idea of doing DNA tests to establish links to ancestors is new to residents of that area and not considered to be very important. But as a result of that trip we have the possibility of receiving ten sets of cheek swabs from Beattys who live in that area. Those ten are willing to contribute their DNA but probably aren't willing or able to pay for having it tested. We have $729 in the Beatty DNA Fund at this writing -- nearly enough to pay for five Y 25 tests at $148 each - and $89 in the General Fund for the Beatty Surname Project at Family Tree DNA. Donations to augment and replenish either fund would be extremely welcome and helpful as we prepare for this unprecedented opportunity to learn more about our genetic relationships to our ancestors who did not emigrate to Ireland or America. The information from these tests could potentially anchor our understanding of our early roots as well as showing new genetic links among us. We hope you can help. Baty, aged 30 and a resident of Morgan County, Missouri, filed a widow's claim for pension. She is the widow of James Beaty who was a Private in Company "F" commanded by Captain Moore in the 18th Regiment of Iowa Infantry. James Beaty died on April 15, 1864 at Poisoned Springs, Arkansas. Mary's maiden name was Mary Francis Houchen and she was married to James Baty on January 13, 1856 in Morgan County, Missouri. A certified copy of this marriage record is in the file. At the time of James Baty's death he had 2 children under the age of sixteen: James Baty born Oct. 13, 1857 and Cordelia Baty born Sept, 5, 1862. James Beattie's cause of death is listed on this form as "wounds received in battle." On August 17, 1870 Joshua A. Chilcoat, aged 32 and a residing "near Florence" Morgan County, Missouri files a claim for pension as guardian of the minor children of James Beaty. He states that he married Mary F. Beaty on March 6, 1870; a certified copy of this marriage record is in the file. I truly don't want to step on any toes with this. First a little history about how I became obsessed with L-9. Many years ago (we are talking eons here) my sister and I came to realize that L-185 Wm Alexander Beatty was probably the son of L-3 John. It was totally frustrating to find he had been named as the "unnamed" son of L-9 in DAR records. Probably the unnamed child had died at or shortly after birth. I doubt Sarah forgot the name of her child. He was just not named because he had died very very young. So in order to prove Wm was the son of John of L-3 we had to first disprove he was the son of L-9 John. Posted 2002 (below) -------------------------- Several of the descendants of William Alexander Beatty of L-185 have joined the DAR saying he is the son of John Beaty and Sarah Whaley Beaty of L-9. I would like to prove he is not their son. First using common sense, William Alexander Beatty per census and family ledger was born in 1811 in Harrison county, West Virginia. John Beaty of L-9 married the widow of his brother George Beatty in 1801 in Montgomery Co., KY. In 1819 he filed for a revolutionary war pension in Montgomery County, KY. His widow Sarah filed for pension on her first husband George Beatty and listed all her children with George and John Beatty. None was a William Beatty. The last child was listed as unnamed but normally this is an unnamed child who died at birth. The following is the will of John Beatty of L-9. He names all his children with both his wives. Again there is no William Beatty. William Beatty of L-185 at the time of this will was alive and well in Ohio. He had married in 1832 in Meigs co., OH and in 1840 was on the census in Athens co., OH. I think we have sufficient proof to say he was not the son of John Beatty of L-9. I would like to remove him from the L-9 file. Now to prove he was the son of John Beatty of L-3. R. county 11 May 53 State of Kentucky, Montgomery County; On this first day of October 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justice of the Montgomery county court now sitting John Beatty a resident of Kentucky in the county of Montgomery aged 75 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following statement in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. He states that he has been previously on the pension roll under the act of Congress of March 18 1818 and that he had received on half years salary and that his pension was discontinued under the act of May 1820 in consequence of his not furnishing a schedule agreeable to the terms of the last recited act. He resided in the state and county aforesaid when he made his first application at which place he now resides. He states that in the year 1778 he entered the service of his country in the Revolutionary war as a private in the regular service in Capt. Biscows company in the 3rd Virginia regiment commanded by Col. Heath stationed at Valley Forge and continued in the regular service for the term of 12 months at the end of which time he received a discharge for farther particulars he refers to his former declaration made in pursuance of the act of 1818 now filed in the war office department. In addition to that declaration he states that he performed a tour of two months as a sergeant in the militia service in Capt Hancocks company and Col George Wests regiment of Virginia militia that the said tour was ended about the time that Corn Wallace surrendered to the American Army and that he was at the siege of York on the Glosster side in cannon shot. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not at this time on the pension roll of the agency of any state. She further she further states that she has heard her last husband and Matthew Adams frequently say that her first husband was in the same company and the same mess? With John Beaty her last husband who drew a pension of forty dollars per year. The above named Matthew Adams is dead she refers to the evidence that give John Beaty his pension prays that be taken as she dose not know of any person that is living that knows of his service. She states that her husband George Beaty had a discharge but it has got lost, she has heard him say that he had a verry sevies? Spell of sickness whilest he was in the service which impaired his health so that he was not a healthy man after it. She knows that he did not enjoy good health after she became acquainted with him, she says that he said he was healthy when he enlisted form the exposure? in the army. He said he never recovered from the sickness he had in the army. The past of a leaf is the record of my children that I had by my first husband, the youngest one that I had when I was married to him is not down owing the the dea?? the of his father when he was small. The record is in my first husbands hand write the leaf from the new testament is the record of my children that I had when I was married to my last husband John Beaty. She also declares that she was married to the said George Beaty the fifth of February seventeen hundred and eighty six, that her husband the aforesaid George Beaty died on the latter part of October on the first of November seventeen hundred and ninety nine in was married in the county of Lowden state of Virginia his death took place in the county of Montgomery state of Kentucky. She further declares that after the death of the husband aforesaid she was married to John Beaty on the sixteenth of July eighteen hundred and one in the county of Montgomery state of Kentucky, that he died on the nineth day of June eighteen hundred and thirty nine in the county of Montgomery, Kentucky and that she is still a widow. I know that she is the same woman that was living with George Beaty when he died. I knew her children. I believe ?? ?? the ages set forth on the family record which I believe is a genuine family record of her family. I have frequently heard John Beaty and Matthew Adams say that George Beaty was in the war of the revolution and had a sever attack of sickness while he was in the army. I have examined the declaration and believe it contains the truth. I Matthew Adams aged fifty four years and a resident of the above written county and state, state that I have frequently heard my father Matthew Adams and John Beaty say that George Beaty was in the war of the Revolution and served as stated by her declaration. It is believed that a warrant did issue and that it fell into the hands of an unscrupulous individual who appropriated it on its proceeds to his own use. She was the widow of George & John Beaty who were both soldiers of the revolution. I wont to know if a warrant ever issued & if it and to whom was it sent. If no warrant ever issued be kind enough to give me reason of the suspicion of the claim. Mrs Beaty was a resident of Montgomery county, Ky- is now dead and her children think there is a wrong some where and intend to ?? try an the matter. Can warrant ?? now under the act she being read? Searcy, 204 Second Avenue, Leavenworth, Kansas; January 20, 1932 Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter of recent date, relative to John Beatty, a soldier of the Revolutionary War. The data which follow are obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War pension claim, W. 2909 of Sarah Beatty of which it is shown that John Beatty enlisted in Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1778, and served as a private for one year under Captains Briscoe and John Peyton in Colonel Heth' s 3rd Virginia Regiment. His brother George Beatty, enlisted from Loudoun County for one year at the same time with him but no further details are given relative to George's service. John also served two months as sergeant in Captain Hancock's company, colonel George West's regiment of Virginia militia and during this time was stationed on the Gloucester side at the siege of York. George Beatty married Sarah ___. In Loudoun County Virginia, February 5, 1786 and he died in Montgomery County, Kentucky, November 1798 or 1799. George and Sarah Beatty had the following children: Thomas born November 24, 178?; James born February 5, 1788; Milly born April 12, 1791; Robearte born September 6, 1793; Andrew born February 12, 1796; one other the youngest, whose name and date of birth are not stated. Said Sarah married her brother in law, John Beatty in Montgomery County, Kentucky, July 16, 1801. He died in said county June 9, 1839. John and Sarah Beatty had the following children: Daniel born July 11, 1802; George born December 1, 1803; Elizabeth born May 26, 1806; Cyrene born December 23, 1808 John Beatty was allowed pension on an application executed September 11, 1819, while a resident of Montgomery County, Kentucky, aged sixty three years. She further states that both of her said husbands were soldiers in the American service, who served during the Revolutionary War. Her first husband George Beaty was a private soldier, and her second husband John Beaty was a sargeant as she has often ??? ?? ?? though she has no positive knowledge of the subject afirthus? She has heard said John Beaty say that he served and belonged in the third Virginia Regiment for the space of twelve months and was then ??? discharged, that he was drafted into the regular service in the year 1777 or 1778 in Loudon county Virginia belonged to the company commanded by John Peyton which was attached to said? regiment and said regiment was ?? and ? by a Colonel Heath that he joined the army at Vally Forge in Pensylvania & after serving said tour of twelve months he was finally discharged at a place called Middlebrook in the state of New Jersey that when he first joined the army at Valley Forge he was attached to Captain Bixos company but remain therein ?? a short time until he was attached to Captain Peyton's company. She has no knowledge ?? often branch after service to which her first husband George Beatty belonged. She has entirely forgotten and cannot now state the company or regiment with names of the officers by ?? the said was commanded. She furthermore declares and says that the said George Beaty her first husband never received any pension from the general? Or any state government or from any other service or any compensation ?? of any kind for his said service so far as She ever knew or claimed? That her second husband the said John Beaty received a pension ??? his death of Forty dollars per annum, this pension was allowed him she think in the year 1832 and he determined to ?? the sum so being then after as he lived. She furthermore states that previous ?? time that the seid John Beaty had drawn a pension of ninety six dollars per annum from government and she thinks ?? and act of Congress of 1818. She does not remember the year in which he first receive the sum or how many years he drew altogether. She also further declares & says that after her said husbands death she made a declaration which was f??? or caused to be ??? with after D???? to the city of Washington, under ?? ??? of which she obtained from government a pension of forty dollars per annum and this she supposes was under the act of Congress of April 1838 that she ??? pension for eight years and that the sum from ?? or other ??? to her was stopped or withheld from her during the last spring so that she has received nothing in the shape of a pension during the present year. Her pension is under the act of February 2, 1848. There seems to be some doubt as to whether the pension was not wrongfully allowed she having again married. The records as sent as sent her from the pension department said John Beatty was at the battle of York, told that he enlisted in Virginia, went to Kentucky following the close of the war and told of his marriage at Mt Sterling Kentucky to his brother's widow and of the birth of his children, naming each among them my husbands grandfather George Beatty. I do not know the county in Virginia from which he enlisted nor do I know his wife's first name. My mother in law used to go with her grandmother to Mt Sterling to get her pension.
