Hi Laural The Charles Beaty and Agnes Lawson m 14/o6/1802 at Ewes is a match for Charles Beattie b. circa 1781 at Lanacleughside Cannonbie d. circa 1873 at Woodside Middlebie (detail from Sue Harding coordinator for L-503). It is confirmed that L-503 and the GEDCOM from Bruce McCartney (Heritage Centre Langholm) are the same family probably originating from Cannonbie area during 1600s (descent from John Beattie b. 1701 (parish unknown) d. circa 1769 at Thorniewhats Cannonbie. Hope this of interest to you! This is of interest to anyone interested in L-1 George and new info to me. Donna L-3 This Was the Life, Excerpts from the Judgment Records of Frederick County, Maryland, 1748-1765 About this book Source: Original data: Rice, Millard Milburn. This Was the Life: Excerpts from the Judgment Records of Frederick County, Maryland, 1748-1765. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2002. Description: This book is composed of extracts from the Judgment Records of Frederick County, Maryland, from the county's formation in 1748 to 1765. Since the Frederick County Court was the sole governing body of the county, as well as its civil and criminal court, the record of its actions covers every phase of colonial life. Here is reflected not only laws and customs, but humor and tragedy, compassion and cruelty-a daily record, in fact, of events in the life of the inhabitants of this important Maryland county. The records of the proceedings of the County Court (the Judgment Records) deal with a wide range of activities and issues, and therefore a substantial number of Frederick County residents appear in the records, which include orphan, bastardy, and custody cases; civil and criminal suits; and a host of petitions for apprenticeships, articles of indenture, appointments, surveys, and licenses. Few books dealing with the early residents of Frederick County provide such insights, and fewer still give accounts of such a large number of persons. The thousands of individuals who are referenced in these pages are not easily forgotten, neither by the genealogist nor the general reader, and it is thanks to the meticulous researches of the compiler that such a clear picture of these people emerges. -------------------------- pg, 34-35 March Court 1749-50 The follow ing two cases are of interest not only because a member of the Beatty family is involved, but also as one of the few instances in which a man was accused of bastardy, or in this case fornication. The first case involves George Beatty and Alice Dorsey. The charge against Beatty is "that he was guilty of fornication with a certain Alice Dorsey .... Beatty in his proper person in Court here comes and says that he cannot gainsay but that he is guilty of the premises above to him in form aforesaid imposed and thereof submits himself to the Grace of the Court here. " "Whereupon the premises being seen and by the Court here fully understood, it is considered by the same Court that the said George Beatty be fined 30 shillings current money for his offense aforesaid and give sufficient security to keep Alice Dorsey's bastard child off the County and hereupon the said George Beatty in Court here pays to George Gordon, Esquire, 30 shillings current money for the fine aforesaid." "At the same time, to wit, the third Tuesday in March aforesaid, the said George Beatty and also Thomas Beatty of Frederick County, Gentleman, and John Kimbol of the same County, farmer, in their proper persons in Court here acknowledge themselves to owe and stand justly indebted unto His Lordship the Lord Proprietor in the full and just sum of £40 current money which they and every of them yielded and granted should be made and levied of their respective goods and chattels, lands and tenaments into whosoever hands they shall come to the use of His said Lordship, his heirs and successors, on condition that the inhabitants of Frederick County aforesaid from time to time and at all times hereafter be well and truly saved harmless and indemnified from any charge, cost or expense in the maintenance of the bastard child of the aforesaid Alice Dorsey and which was sworn to him and the said George Beatty is dismissed. " Alice Dorsey was accused as follows: "That a certain Alice Dorsey was guilty of having a bastard child .... The said Alice Dorsey by Daniel Dulany, Jr., her attorney, comes ana says that she cannot gainsay but that she is guilty of the premises and submits herself to the Grace of the Court here," "It is considered by the Court here that the said Alice Dorsey be fined 30 shillings current money for her offense aforesaid according to Act of Assembly." She paid her fine through her attorney and was dismissed.

We have uploaded another "Success Story" to our beattydna.org website. You can read it at http://www.beattydna.org/Connections3.html This is the story of Marv Beatty's search for his genetic roots. The DNA Project has brought about some unexpected results. His is truly a remarkable, and yet unfinished, story. As he said about searching for his genetic roots, "Its fascinating detective work, especially if youre prepared for surprises." Les Beaty, L-20
In honor of our DNA sample that will arrive soon from a man born in Montrose, Scotland, I copied the following Border Crossing card of John Beatie from Montrose, Scotland, resident of Guelph, Ontario Canada. I traced John Beattie's lineage back to David Beattie who was born Oct. 19, 1783 in Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, Scotland and died in 1868 in Montrose, Scotland. Don Beattie, L510 ([email protected]) passed this on to me and asked me to share it. --Laurel Baty, L252 Hi Laurel and Nelda, Please share with whomever you wish. Don Beattie I forget who is doing Bauldy Beattie but David Johnsone Beattie in his book, LAND SYNE IN ESKDALE (1950) has this to say about Bauldy and the Common Riding on page 136-37. Maybe others have seen this book. It was given to me by David's son, Kenneth, Beattie, in 1974. "Just previous to the year 1778, when, as we have seen, Meikleholm Farm was being dismantled and the Duke's surveyor engage in pegging out the broad meadows preparatory to the erection of dwelling houses and other property in furtherance of the new scheme outlined by His Grace, there might have been seen a certain day in July, the familiar figure of Bauldy Beattie, town drummer and fair crier, making his own way on foot up the Kirk Wynd to the hill ' to see gif a' oor marches be clear.' The Parish Kirk up the brae would at that time be in process of rebuilding and we wonder whether 'Bauldy' lingered for a crack with the masons on his way by. The present forlorn and weather-beaten ruin in the Auld Kirkyard is all that is left of the freshly-hewn stone kirk that Bauldy would see slowly rising from foundation to belfry, for he lived nearby, and would doubtless be a frequent visitor to the mason's shed in the Auld Kirkyard. It is said that for more than fifty years he walked the marches and 'cried the Langholm Fair' on the steps of the Cross, which at that time stood in the Market Place." "Since the stranger or incomer in our midst may not yet be initiated into the mysteries of the "Muckle Toon' and the Common Riding, here is the story." "The Award of the Court of Session in 1759 recognised that the burgess of Langholm hd certain legal (136) rights in the Commonty. Consequently it became a public duty om their part to see that these rights were maintained. The boundaries were set forth in the Award, and in order that these might be maintained intact, the inhabitants engaged a man to go out on ce a year to inspect the boundaries, report encroachments, and generally protect the interests of the people of Langholm. This duty of policing the Marches was assigned to Archibald Beattie, the town's drummer, and this worth walked the Marches annually, pointing out their boundaries to all who cared to accompany him. Up to the year 1814, 'Bauldy,' as he was popularly called, went over the Marches on foot. In 1816, the year after Waterloo, Arciv Thompson, an inn-keeper in the town, who succeeded Bauldy Beattie went over the boundaries on horseback alone, but soon he was accompanied by other townsmen. Since then that tiny stream of horsemen, going out once a year to the Common Moss and Kilngreen to protect the interests uphold the rights of the people, has swollen to a cavalcade sometimes numbering over a hundred and more,* led by a Langholm lad bearing aloft the town's standard." (137) There are a few other citations in this book as well about Bauldy Beattie. These are on pages 140 and 141 but I will just quote, here, the main section which appears on page 140. BAULDY BEATTIE "In his day--fully a century and a half ago--there was no more popular personage in the Muckle Toon that 'Bauldy Beattie, the Town Drummer and Fair Crier. On these festal occasions while performing his duty, 'Bauldy' wore a very fancy suit of clothes. His head was adorned with a three-cornered hat, while he was dressed in a drab coat with red plush knee breeches, a vest of the same colour, white stockings and broad-nebbed shoes. He lived in a thatched house at the foot of the Kirk Wynd, and he died in 1825 at the ripe age of 90 years. 'Bauldy' Beattie is buried in the aulds Kirkyard, and his tombstone may be seen nearby the south end of the kirk ruin. General Sir Charles Pasley, one of Langholm's distinguished soldier sons of that period, has commemorated 'Bauldy' Beattie in these lines:-- First 'Bauldy' Beattie, glorious chief appears, Who joins to youthful force the sense of years; Majestic! how he moves, born to command; Heather his brow adorns, a sword his hand. While other men by Fashion led astray, He, against all her gaudy tricks secure, Preserves the manners of our father's pure. (140)
There is a lot of great information to be found on Border Crossing Cards for points of entry to the US, microfilmed in a number of series by the National Archives. Several series are now available on Ancestry.com. The following series is not on Ancestry but is available at the National Archives. I believe the card transcribed is from L515. The microfilm is arranged by soundex code [Beattie all spellings is B300] and then alphabetical by first name. It takes a bit of time to go through the cards and I need to go back and look at this series again. I copied 1 other record for a John Beattie from Montrose Scotland which I will post separately. -- Laurel Baty, L252 >From M1480 Manifests of Alien Arrivals at Buffalo, Lewiston, Niagra Falls & Rochester NY 1902 -1954, B300 Elizabeth - B354 Henry[Soundex index] Buffalo, NY 9/11/18 Beattie, Emily Place of Birth: Glasgow, Scotland; age 55, sex F, Occupation Cafeteria; Read, Yes Race: Scotch; Nationality Canada; Last Permanent residence: Toronto Name and Address of nearest relative in country whence ?? came: Daughter Violet Fry, 83 Roach Ave. Richwood, Toronto Ever in US: Yes, from 1902 to July 1915, Where: NY; Passage paid by: Self Destination and name and address of relative or friend to join there: friend Bessie Wakeland, 159 St. & 3rd Ave. NYC Money Shown: $40 Head tax station [??]; M.
