Were other Boyntons moving to upstate NY too? Anybody know why?? > Hi, Sara, and welcome to the list. I don't have any direct info on why NY, but the timing is pretty obviously connected to generally existing conditions. Other descendants of early settlers were starting to migrate west and south in that timeframe as well. Some causes were undoubtably the availability of newly-opened areas, and other things like population pressures and possibly Indian troubles could have been behind it. My grandfather Ephraim Boynton left Rowley with many of his younger family members (including his son Amos, who is my last ancestor born in Rowley) around 1750 as well, although he stayed in Massachusetts (Chockset, present-day Sterling, near Worcester). At least, I think he did. I have no record of Ephraim's death date or place. After his marriage to Sarah Snow, Amos lived in NH and possibly VT before the Revolution, then moved his family to Georgia around 1790. My only other known New England-originating family moved south at about the same time, the Penningtons who left eastern PA around 1750 for North Carolina.
