Do you know where she was born? (Otherwise, where was the date discovered?) I looked through the Boynton genealogy, and only found two girls who were born close to that date: Sally, b. 13 Jun 1772 (Stephen5, Stepher4, Benoni3, Joseph2, John1) Sarah, bapt. 12 Jul 1779 (Amos5, Ephraim4, Joseph3, Joseph2, John1) While Amos lived in or near Worcester Co., he had moved to NH and possibly to GA before this Sarah was born, so she's not a likely candidate to be yours. The families who moved to Canada are not as well covered in the genealogy as their American cousins, unfortunately. However, the fact that your Sarah "Sally" married a man from the western part of Massachusetts reinforces my theory that several related families of Boyntons may have migrated out there between 1750 and 1776 (since she doesn't seem to belong to any of Ephraim's descendants). This was a time of lots of migration, with the coastal areas filling up. Maybe we can help narrow the field by discovering who some of the other westering Boyntons were. 1. [BOYNTON-L] Early Westering Boyntons
    2. Katherine Cochrane
    3. Hi, The list has been quiet for awhile (unless I'm still not getting messages from the list) -- I guess everyone is busy with the holiday season, etc. Me, too, but I thought I'd try to start a discussion before launching into another week of travel & work. Ephraim Boynton, great-grandson of Rowley, MA immigrant John Boynton, left Rowley with his family and relocated in a village called Sterling, near Worcester, MA. According to DeLorme's Street Atlas USA CD-ROM, there are several street names that are very familiar to Rowley researchers: Jewett Rd., Rowley Hill Rd., Gates Rd. To me this suggests that Ephraim Boynton was not the only Rowley export to the western frontier (as it was in those days). Does anyone know more about this exodus from Rowley in the generation before the American Revolution? Were there other Boyntons among the westering group? What about their neighbors & cousins, the Jewetts, and others? By the way, Ephraim's son, Amos, who fought in the Revolution, was born in Rowley but married "out west" to Sarah Snow, and they were later found in Fitzwilliam, NH before moving south to Georgia, possibly to claim veteran's bounty land there. The Boynton genealogy book says Sarah Snow's father's name was Jonathan, but nothing more is presently known about her family. If >he's right, I'm disappointed; I rather liked being descended from the guy. I have a copy of the Curfman article (somewhere!), and it did confuse me no end. It doesn't help that the J. F. Boynton genealogy is rather unclear about the generations between 1405 and 1614 or so, either. I thought at one point I'd figured it out, then read Curfman and decided that there wasn't enough hard data to make sense of. Obviously, having the head of the family executed for high treason puts a damper on one's wish or ability to commemorate one's lineage. As for "sinking" the Boynton book's line, I don't recall if Curfman did that precisely, or just called some assumptions into question. When I find my copy of it, I'll have a relook at it and report my conclusions (if any). > >On another note, does anyone know what the primary sources are for the >supposed Knapton/Wintringham origin of the immigrant Boynton brothers? >I've looked through the Wintringham parish registers, and there are plenty >of Boyntons, but none recognizable as ours. You're ahead of me there. But what about "visitation" records? Has anyone looked at them, if they exist? The Burton Agnes branch of the family ought to have had something along those lines, although I don't know if there are any descendants of Sir Matthew living. Y'all have a happy Thanksgiving! 3. My actual US Boynton line seems to be short by the standards of this list: John Boynton (the immigrant) +Ellen Pell Joseph Boynton (Capt.) +Sarah Swan Sarah Boynton +Samuel Tenn(e)y and from there on out they're all Tenn(e)ys. On the UK side, I understand from discussion over on ESSEX-ROOTS that there's a _Colonial Genealogist_ article by Robert Joseph Curfman that pretty much sinks the line to Bartholomew de Boynton given in the Boynton Book. I haven't read it (time constraints), and in any case I'm not well qualified to judge competing genealogical claims; I'd like to know if any of us have developed an informed opinion on Curfman's contentions. Among other things, he tells us that we aren't actually descendants the Sir Henry Boynton who was executed in 1405 for his role in the plot to overthrow Henry IV (but instead of his brother Christopher Boynton). If he's right, I'm disappointed; I rather liked being descended from the guy. On another note, does anyone know what the primary sources are for the supposed Knapton/Wintringham origin of the immigrant Boynton brothers? I've looked through the Wintringham parish registers, and there are plenty of Boyntons, but none recognizable as ours. NT

    3. Hi, cousin! Welcome! Don't worry about covering old ground -- there isn't much. This is a new list, just a few weeks old, so almost anything you post would be new. Going over genealogies to clear up misconceptions is what the list is for, and can provide new answers (and questions) for others as well as one or two in a private message, so please do post them to the list. I think that's why the internet has been such a boon to genealogists, that we see things we weren't necessarily looking for, and they can sometimes make something else click into place. 3. Hello, I just subscribed, and have not seen any postings. I descend from John and Ellinor (Pell) Boynton, but would like to get a definitive handle on the Boynton ancestry. I've seen several variations, and do not know which to accept. I'd like to post what I have, but do not know if this would cover old ground. If someone has the ancestry with some degree of confidence, perhaps you could contact me off-list to share it if it is inappropriate to do so on the list. My line of descent goes through son Joseph and Sarah (Swan) to their daughter Sarah, wife of Samuel Tenney. I'd be happy to share more if anyone is interested in that line. Gordon Kirkemo

    1. [BOYNTON-L] BUNTON/OTTERSON of Essex,Co,MA and Allenstown,NH(late 1600's-early 1700's) (BUNTON is sometimes written BOYNTON)
    2. Brian C.Page
    3. Can anyone out there tell me anything about the ancestors of Robert BUNTON/BUNTEN and Martha OTTERSON? They were married in Haverhill,Essex Co.,MA on 8 Dec 1737(VR 2:48). They had a son Andrew born there 8 Sept 1738(VR 1:51). I have no birthdates for the couple, but due to the date of marriage and assuming it is a first marriage for both..... date of birth say 1715-1720. To those on the BOYNTON list, their daughter Mary who married Samuel ALEXANDER of Londonderry,NH has been shown as BOYNTON and others may appear that way. OTTERSON can not be a very common name, nor BUNTON for that matter. 3. Hi, cousins, This is a bit weird, but for some reason, although I started this list at Rootsweb a month or so ago, I haven't been getting any messages or announcements from the system. I just happened to do a search of the subscribers on the list maintenance page today, when I was testing a new subscribe/unsubscribe form (more on that later), and discovered a whole bunch of you have been using it!! That's wonderful, but I'm a bit disconcerted about having missed out. I'll have to see what's going on and get the backfiles if I can. So, a belated welcome to you all! <G> As mentioned above, I've just installed a new form in my website to make it easier to subscribe or unsubscribe to this list. That's at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~kwc/boynton/list.html I'm going to put a link to that page in the site's homepage and the Boynton directory index page, and will add this info to the taglines for list messages to make it easier to find. Cheers, Katherine Sorry for neglecting to answer any queries I missed seeing up to this point! http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~kwc <-- NEW location genealogy/family history http://www.cd-info.com <-- The CD Information Center http://www.cd-webstore.com <-- Information products about CD Technology HACKWORTH-L & BOYNTON-L surname discussion lists at http://www.rootsweb.com (list subscribe/unsubscribe forms available in genealogy website) Glad to be a Rootsweb Donor

    1. BOYNTON line - Rowley, MA
    2. It's great to see the different Boynton lines popping up from everywhere - thanks to Chuck Seyfert, and great to have some lines from Maine at last - though we all evidently originated in Rowley - ancestors that is. Sarah, I don't think there is an error in the beginning of your line - it looks as though you are in William's direct line, John's older brother. John Boynton who married Ellen Pell had a son named Caleb in Rowley in 1649 who married Hannah Harriman. Your Caleb who married Mary Moore(s) was born in Rowley in 1650. Here's a URL for a website that has a lot of information (a lot from John Farnham & Caroline Boynton's 1897 book): http://members.aol.com/drquine/boynton.html There's some interesting history there as well as a link to Kathryn Cochrane who is from John Boynton's line who has some more interesting history of Rowley at her site. It looks as though John Stafney's line is also from William as his Caleb Boynton was born in 1650 but only he can confirm that. I don't have the Boynton book but there is a website that gives a lot of info from it, Mike Pluvoy's American Boynton Association website. I sent a list of these above websites and more to the Boynton List Digest on November 6th which was published on the Digest if you have access to it. I've heard more than once that all Boyntons (and all variant spellings) in the U.S. came from William and John Boynton of Rowley. If that's true we are more fortunate than most, even though we still can come up against brick walls (especially with regard to female ancestors). Will send in my line soon as I can firm up some more wives' names but briefly it's: John and Ellen (Pell) Boynton; Capt.Joseph and Sarah (Swan) Boynton; Sgt. Richard and Sarah (Dresser) Boynton; Nathaniel and Mary (Stewart) Boynton; (all the foregoing from Rowley); Richard and Susannah (Williams) Boynton (from MA and N.H.); Nathaniel and Hannah (Humphries) Boynton of Lynn, MA primarily; William Pickering Boynton who married Harriet K. Brown - Lynn and Marblehead, MA; William Frank Boynton who married Emma Potter - Marblehead (my grandfather and grandmother): (these last three generations - in Lynn and Marblehead were in the shoe manufacturing business; my father George Potter Boynton of Marblehead who married my mother Agnes (Porter) Boynton of Cutler (Washington Co.), ME; and myself Mildred (Boynton) Laurine who married Anthony J.Laurine, Sr. of Manhattan,N.Y.( Anthony, Sr. now deceased). I find it easier to keep the generations straight if I add descriptive data - sorry it's not as brief as I intended. Have only just started my genealogy website so it's not ready for a link yet. If anyone in any Boynton line could shed more light on where Hannah Humphries came from I would really appreciate the info - think she was from Marblehead but have not yet been able to confirm her parentage. Thanks. Mildred Laurine cascobaylife@worldnet.att.net

Although I start with a Caleb Boynton, same as Chuck Seyfert, I have different parents for him, and also a different wife. My mother and grandmother did a lot of the family genealogy, so I don't know where they got some of this information. Chuck, where did you get your information? I think there is an error in the beginning of my line. Sarah

    3. Chuck, Glad to meet you! Thanks for the kick-off. My wife, Nancy STOFFER, is descended from John as well: 1-John Boynton (1614-1670) of Knapton, Wintringham, Yorkshire, England, married Ellen Pell (-) of Boston, MA 2-John Boynton born 17 Sep1647, a weaver and husbandman in Rowley, and later, Bradford, MA, married 1675 Hannah Keyes, who died in Bradford, MA 11 Apr 1717. John remarried Mary of Bradford 19 Feb 1718-19. 3-Zachariah Boynton born 16 Feb 1689, married 19 Feb 1718 Mary Boynton (-) of Bradford, MA, where they resided until 1746 4-John Boynton (26 Dec1719-29 Oct 1787) married Ruth Jewett (1745-1812) of Rowley, MA 5-John Boynton born 11 Aug 1754 in Hollis, NH; died 29 Dec 1807. He married 1784 Sarah Woods (1758-1849) My question is did Zacharia and his father both marry women named Mary on the same date? Could they have been members of a Quaker society? I know that the Quakers held monthly meetings where births, marriages, and deaths would be recorded, and issues of importance to the members would be discussed. I found that many of my Quaker ancestors had been "disowned" by the society for fighting in various wars including the Revolutionary War.
