Katherine, Thanks for your reply. You are right, there are some inconsistencies. I typed the way it read. I am looking through some of the other obits to see if there is additional mention of the sister, Mrs. Morton. Randy
Hi, Elle, > > * Most researchers in the US are _not_ descended from William (b. > 1605), but from his brother. Maybe that's a case of the grass is greener ... I've felt just the opposite, being a descendant of John, and hearing from so many of William's offspring. <G> Both brothers left gobs of descendants. > > * Nobody seems to be working on New York State lines. > > * And nobody, but nobody, seems to be working on an Ari T. or his > (probable) father Olivet! > See the messages last evening from Randy Ortwein and Felicia Hazelton. If you subscribed too late to get them before the next archive is prepared, I'd be happy to forward them to you, along with my comment on an obituary of Ari T. that Randy keyed in. Olivet was apparently Ari's brother, not his father, at least according to the 1897 Boynton genealogy book that is considered quite good (but not perfect). In it, Ari T. & Olivet's parents are given as Justus Boynton and Rhoda Bennet. The last name seems to jive with your information, anyway. I especially appreciate the fine way you sourced all your information -- good job!! Hi, all -- I've done a bit of poking about in the BOYNTON-L archives, and in the various BOYNTON Web sites available (thanks, Katherine, for your very nice page!), and I've come to a few conclusions: * Most researchers in the US are _not_ descended from William (b. 1605), but from his brother. * Nobody seems to be working on New York State lines. * And nobody, but nobody, seems to be working on an Ari T. or his (probable) father Olivet! Austana Loring BOYNTON was born 11 Jun 1833 in McGrawville[1], Cortland County, New York. She had two younger sisters: Louisa (m. William French), and Mary (m. Martin Davis). Austana married Edward Justus Angell 5 Sep 1855 [2], in McLean, Tompkins County, NY; they had five children, including Austana Loring ANGELL, from whom my spouse descends. Austana (BOYNTON) Angell died 12 Aug 1877 [3] in Waverly, Tioga County, NY, after a long illness[4]; she was 44, and her youngest child was only ten. Her sister Mary brought her two daughters to Waverly to take care of the children.[5] Austana, Louisa and Mary were all born to Ari T. and Calista (LORING) Boynton. Calista was a passenger on the first train that ran in the U.S., the "DeWitt Clinton", which made its first official trial with passengers 9 Aug 1831 [6]. Her background and ancestry (born 27 Aug 1810 in Petersham, MA, Calista was the ninth of eleven children born to Israel and Hannah (JONES) Loring) is fairly well-researched. She was married to Ari 17 Sep 1832, by Rev. Luther Wilson of her hometown[7]. Ari T. [*] BOYNTON was born in Bern, Albany County, NY, 16 May 1806, and migrated a bit: in 1832 he was presumably in central Massachusetts getting married, and the following year in McGrawville, Cortland County, NY, where his first child was born; he later published a newspaper called _The McGrawville Express_[8]. He spent a while in Greene, Chenango County, before settling in McLean, Tompkins County.[9] He was ordained 14 Nov 1855, and became pastor of the McLean Baptist Church.[10] Ari died, in McLean, 30 Jan 1888, "while shovelling snow in the great blizzard."[11] But who was Ari? We have only a few clues: * His mother may have been named Rhoda; an 1856 letter addressed to "children and grandchildren," and datelined "McGrawville," appears to be signed "Rhoda Boynton." * We have calling cards addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Boynton" from Edna and Levi Thompson, identifying themselves as "your cousins." (On whose side of the family?) * I can't locate the source of this information, but we believe that Ari's father was named Olivet. (If the New York State Dept. of Health ever gets back to me with Ari's death certificate.... sigh.) * A family album collected by the husband of Ari's granddaughter claims: Ari Boynton was descended from William Boynton (b. 1605), who joined an expedition organized by Sir Matthew Boynton and emigrated to Massachusetts in 1638, where he settled at Rowley, Essex Co. Sir Matthew stayed in England and joined Cromwell in the Great Rebellion. And that's all we have on our BOYNTONs so far. Anybody have a good lead? -- Ellen Keyne Seebacher elle@pobox.com ===== [1] Family album claims her birthplace was "Cortlandville," but an earlier, handwritten family register lists "McGrawville." [2] Married by Rev. Chauncey Darby according to same register. [3] "Frank, truthfulness, sense of humor, loved flowers -- verbena, rose leaf geranium. Desire to make others happy. Reserved. Feeling of timorousness (prayer meeting); suffered without complaint. Went to school in McGrawville -- had many friends. A fine sense of spiritual things. 'Ever ready to pass over ones imperfections if he tries to do the best he can' --E.J.A." (Probably a note by her husband for her eulogy.) [4] Edward Angell's eulogy, written c. 1900, says "Mention of him recalls his noble, brave, sweet-spirited, sainted wife, whose presence in the home gave it sweetness and light, and whose long and trying illness attested to the sufficiency of divine grace to turn suffering into blessing..." [5] They "found her a thorn in the flesh and were happy and relieved when she left after about a year." From the family album, by the husband of one of the long-suffering children! [6] Family album, and newspaper clippings. [7] From the handwritten family register. [*] And what on earth does that "T." stand for? [8] 1938 letter from Loring French to his cousin Austana (ANGELL) Pierce. [9] Various letters addressed to Ari. His name is given as BOYINGTON on several letters. [10] Pamphlet titled "History of McLean Baptist Church," apparently written between 1903 and 1905. It adds, "In the six years of his pastorate God had abundantly blessed his people, and great good had been accomplished." [11] Handwritten note on back of church program for First Presbyterian Church, Cortland, identifying Ari and Calista as "Grandpa and Grandma." (Snow note is from family album.)
Randy, This is great! Thanks for keying these in for us. According to John Farnham Boynton's 1897 Boynton genealogy, there are a few inconsistencies in this obituary (as frequently happens): >.... Many of the older >residents of this county will remember the venerable father and brothers, >Olivet, Deacons, Bennett, Adno, Nathaniel, and one sister, Mrs. Morton, all >long since passed away. Edwin, the youngest of that respectable family is >living at Winnetka, IL. Rather than being the son of Olivet Boynton as this implies (somewhat ambiguosly), Ari Turner was his brother. All of those named are children of Justus Boynton and Rhoda Bennet. Also, there should not have been a comma after "Deacons" since that was the title held by Justus Bennett, Adno and Nathaniel rather than another brother. However, J.F. Boynton does not list a sister, Mrs. Morton. Is she in the other Boynton book, the Directory? I don't have that one. I am sending along as I input them. You should have one for Rev. Ari Turner Boynton. Randy
BOYNTON - At his home in McLean, NY, Jan 30th 1888, Rev Ari Turner Boynton, age 82 years. Elder Boynton had been in poor health for some years, and while shoveling snow from his walk, he died suddenly of heart disease. He was born in Berno, Albany Co., NY, May 16, 1806. While a small boy, his parents moved to Coventry, Conn. When about 21 years old, he with his parents, moved to the farm now owned by John Kenfield, about two miles north of McGrawville. In 1832 he married Carista Loring of Petersham, Worchester Co., Mass, and they occupied for a number of years the farm now owned by Zenas Freeman. He moved to McGrawville and published the McGrawville Express, and subsequently moved to Greene, Chenago Co., and published the Chenago News. While residing at the latter place he had a call to preach the gospel. This call he could not resist and moved to McLean, preaching for six years. He was pastor of the Baptist church at Sempronius for four years and at Solon for three years. He then returned to his first pastorate at McLean, where he preached two years. His health failing him, he was unable to preach longer, except that he supplied the church at Etna about two years. Elder Boynton was an honest man, much respected by his neighbors for his sterling qualities. He was a sincere and devoted Christian and will be greatly missed by the church he loved so well. Through his efforts a bell was placed at the church at McLean, and with his own hand a fence was built and these beautiful trees were planted. He leaves a wife and two daughters - Mrs., French of Groton and Mrs. Davis of Kingsville Ohio. His eldest daughter, Mrs. Angell of Waverly, died some years since. Many of the older residents of this county will remember the venerable father and brothers, Olivet, Deacons, Bennett, Adno, Nathaniel, and one sister, Mrs. Morton, all long since passed away. Edwin, the youngest of that respectable family is living at Winnetka, IL.

Do you know where she was born? (Otherwise, where was the date discovered?) I looked through the Boynton genealogy, and only found two girls who were born close to that date: Sally, b. 13 Jun 1772 (Stephen5, Stepher4, Benoni3, Joseph2, John1) Sarah, bapt. 12 Jul 1779 (Amos5, Ephraim4, Joseph3, Joseph2, John1) While Amos lived in or near Worcester Co., he had moved to NH and possibly to GA before this Sarah was born, so she's not a likely candidate to be yours. The families who moved to Canada are not as well covered in the genealogy as their American cousins, unfortunately. However, the fact that your Sarah "Sally" married a man from the western part of Massachusetts reinforces my theory that several related families of Boyntons may have migrated out there between 1750 and 1776 (since she doesn't seem to belong to any of Ephraim's descendants). This was a time of lots of migration, with the coastal areas filling up. Maybe we can help narrow the field by discovering who some of the other westering Boyntons were. Hi, cousins, I've just spotted a new GENWEB project page for Sterling, MA. There are several Boyntons listed in the various Vital Records pages. Check it out at http://genweb.net/Sterling-Ma/ and drop a note to the volunteer who is doing these pages to thank her for the outstanding job!
