    1. [BOYNTON-L] New Rootsweb Feature
    2. Katherine Cochrane
    3. This announcement was in the Rootsweb Reviews email newsletter this week, in case you missed it. I will set up our lists today, so we can start taking advantage of it right away. ---< begin Rootsweb announcement >--- THREADED LIST ARCHIVES ARE NOW AVAILABLE. Now you can read 122,813 messages from 877 mailing lists using your Web browser by visiting <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/>. All those messages are from just three months of beta tests -- watch this archives grow with its public debut. This is a remarkably comfortable way to browse through the posts that have been made to the lists. Be sure to use the integrated search engine to find what you are looking for. To use the Archiver you will need to pick a user name and password and you will need to accept a cookie. The reason for passwords and cookies is to keep spammers' e-mail address harvesters *out* of the archives. Because of this password-and- cookie feature, listowners can set up lists to be archived with confidence that they are *not* exposing posters' addresses to spammers. We encourage all RootsWeb listowners to visit the Archiver and then include their lists in the archives. The next step is to start making old list messages available. Thanks to Marc Nozell for implementing the threaded archives. It's great work. ---< end Rootsweb announcement >--- Cheers, Katherine <katherine@cd-info.com> listowner for Boynton, Cashion and Hackworth surname lists on Rootsweb

    3. Grace, I should have also mentioned that Helen M. Boynton married George Bliss in 1850. That might help you find a marriage record, presumably in Walworth, NY. You might find that easily in a marriage index CD-ROM. Family Tree Maker/Broderbund Software have such CDs, which you can find in many genealogy retail websites. 1. [BOYNTON-L] BUSH, SWEET, BOYNTON > NY > MI
    2. Well, this is a new year and I will toss out my names and see if a new year brings forth new leads. I am researching Content BUSH who married George Wesley SWEET. They had a daughter, Mercedes ( Mercy ) who married Albert Latham BOYNTON. Albert Latham BOYNTON (1837 - 1902 ) Married ( 1868 ) Mercy C. SWEET ( 1849 - 1912 ). They were married in Pompey, Onandaga County, NY. Albert was the son of Olivet BOYNTON and Abby BRIGHTMAN. He was born in Cortland Co., NY Content BUSH may have been the daughter of Content (GRIMES) and William Watson BUSH. Mercy SWEET had a brother Charles. Many of the BUSH family moved to Livingston Co., Mich. in the mid 1850s. She lived in Pompey and Cortlandville. Does anyone have additional info that could cast some light on these families ? Thanks for any help, Randy Ortwein

Here's what I had in my database from that source: 1. Amos Boynton b. 1742 Rowley, Essex Co., MA, d. 1810 Wilkes Co., GA + Sarah Snow, b. (probably) MA, d. 1801 Wilkes Co., GA 2. Moses Boynton, b. 1770, probably FitzWilliam, NH, d. 1852, Talbot Co., GA + Tabitha Chapman, b. NC 3. John C. Boynton, b. 1801, Baldwin Co., GA, d. 1845 + Rebecca Stinson 4. Ann E. Boynton + James Cook Additional documentation is from the FTM CD #226 (Marriage Index, GA 1754-1850) for family #3. I'm descended from Moses' brother, Elijah Snow Boynton, who also had a granddaughter named Annie Elizabeth Boynton (my gg grandmother). My Annie Elizabeth was born, lived and died in Texas, though. 3. Hi, all, Here's a website URL one of our members sent to me: http://members.tripod.com/~Scott_Michaud/Boynton-history.html You won't want to miss this one. It has an excellent summary of the English history of the family, and pictures of the manor house at Burton Agnes. By the way, as a point of detail, Burton Agnes was never occupied by members of the American branch of the family. The manor was acquired by Sir Matthew Boynton, who was our cousin, but not our ancestor. I believe Sir Matthew commissioned the house (designed by Inigo Jones, one of the greatest architects of all time). Be sure to follow the link to the Yorkshire directory. It has some valuable info, including descriptions of East and West Heslerton (East Riding, under "H"), where our John and William Boynton were born. Thank you VERY much. My first reaction was, WOW, here we go! But I am of the cautious and suspicious breed, when it comes to genealogy, so I took a closer look, and came up with the following comments: ---------- Edmund Tarbell you have b. 17 Jun 1767 I have b. ca 1767, unknown place you have d. Nov 1854 I have d. 11 Sep 1843, prob. Mt. Holly, VT Comment: I believe there were more than one Edmund/Edmond Tarbells in Vermont during this period of time, from census indexes. I'll have to recheck that. you have Betty (Elizabeth) (Boynton) Tarbell I have Polly (Boynton) Tarbell you have b. 29 Aug 1761 I have b. ca 1773, unknown place you have d. 10 Mar 1808, VT I have d. 10 Mar 1808, prob. Mt. Holly, VT Comment: I have not seen "Polly" used as a form of Elizabeth; usually it is a form of "Mary." The name "Polly" is well-documented for my Edmond Tarbell's wife; also for their first child. None of their children is named with a form of "Elizabeth." ---------- My tentative conclusion, unfortunately, is that the 10 Mar 1808 death date has been applied to the wrong person. The 1767 birth date for Edmond has also been misapplied, or it is a simple coincidence. Otherwise, we are dealing with two different marriages for four separate people. Please accept my thanks for forwarding what you have. The search continues! Darrell Darrell A. Martin formerly of Springfield, Vermont currently in exile in Addison, Illinois darrellm@sprynet.com

    2. Hi Darrell. I have been reading a recent message regarding Nathaniel Boynton. I am looking for information on a Jacob Boynton who lived in Ohio around 1846, his wife was Candias Spiniar and they had a daughter named Celia born maybe in May 1847. The family later moved to Michigan, near Ionia. The name Candias Spiniar is very possibly misspelled. I found the name on a death certificate and it was difficult to read. Celia their daughter d. 8-11-1909, she married a Pellington Buxton. Thanks for any information you might have. Virginia Cox

If you aren't familiar with Rootsweb's list archives, see http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl. Very useful! The BOYNTON list is reasonably new, so there isn't much there yet, but we have had some interesting discussions. Naturally, if one wants to get off-topic or send attachments, private email is preferred for that, but this is an "open" list in the sense that nobody's going to get thrown out for long, detailed postings. >My web searches have turned up a PILE of Nathaniel Boyntons, but the one >you suggest as a possibility looks as good as any. Exactly right. Around 1750 there was a lot of new territory opening up. That's when my grandfather Ephraim Boynton left Rowley with his family for the "Western Frontier" north of Worchester, MA (present-day Sterling). His son Amos moved further north after 1766, which is probably when he married Sarah Snow (probably in Sterling or nearby in Shrewsbury -- the Sterling VRs were lost in a fire, so we don't have a record of that marriage), to FitzWilliam, New Hampshire, and a lot of Boyntons wound up in VT when it split off from NH. As in most cases of this kind, the hardest part of the problem >will be to prove by a preponderance of credible evidence "which" Nathaniel >Boynton settled in Cavendish, then Mt. Holly, Vermont. Using the new Early Essex Co. MA Vital Records CD-ROM might help you decide which Nathaniel is yours, too. It's available from the NEHGS (http://www.nehgs.org/SalesDept/cdrom.htm#vitals), among other places. > >Even if this doesn't pan out, I appreciate the effort on your part. You're quite welcome. If this is not the case, I will be perfectly happy to adjust. My web searches have turned up a PILE of Nathaniel Boyntons, but the one you suggest as a possibility looks as good as any. The timing is certainly right for a young man in eastern Massachusetts to be setting his sights on newly opened territory, like the upper river valleys of eastern and central Vermont. As in most cases of this kind, the hardest part of the problem will be to prove by a preponderance of credible evidence "which" Nathaniel Boynton settled in Cavendish, then Mt. Holly, Vermont.
