Dear Researchers of the BOYLE Surname, Having just subscribed to the BOYLE Mailing List, I will describe my reason for joining. John BOYLE was born in Garrard County, Kentucky in 1825, a son of Samuel BOYLE and Barzilla MURPHY. From about 1833 to about 1843, Samuel BOYLE made a go of it in Clinton County, Indiana, during which time his son John BOYLE was NOT always at home with his parents, and may have been "working the River". About 1843, Samuel BOYLE returned to Kentucky, to Lewis County, on the Ohio River. John BOYLE, wherever he was before that, appeared in his parents' home in the 1850 Census of Lewis County, Kentucky. John BOYLE was enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky. In 1860, John BOYLE was a "Tradesman" in partnership with Henry MCKEE. John BOYLE married Catherine HACKWORTH about 1865, and they had a son Samuel. Sometime before 1870, Captain John BOYLE took my third-great grandfather William COOPER into his home and looked after him. Mr. COOPER had been wounded in the Civil War. About 1875, John BOYLE moved to Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio, and set up as a saloon-keeper. In March of 1880, John BOYLE was one of two witnesses to my ancestor William COOPER's Invalid Pension Application. John BOYLE died in 1901, and was buried in Ironton, Ohio. His obituary stated that he had been a STEAMBOAT CAPTAIN in antebellum days, but did not mention the rivers or vessels associated with Captain John BOYLE's steamboat days. If you have researched Captain John BOYLE, or could lead me to more information on his steamboat days, or on his son Samuel BOYLE after 1880, please contact me! Thank you so much. I do appreciate it.
