Mike, Thanks for responding - it's good to hear from another Boyle even if we find no connection. John refused to talk about his mother and father or any siblings. As I mentioned he didn't go to church and according to my Mom (who I just lost this past January) had even more aversion to Roman Catholics. As a Roman Catholic, it has been my experience that some of those most hostile to us Catholics are former members. Why? Well, that's another story. At any rate, John Boyle married my great-grandmother, Mary Eliza Olden) and had four sons, in order of their births: Evan, Charles, Jay and Gale (my grandfather). Via the Net I connected with Evan's great-granddaughter some of whose people have settled in the Bellingham, Washington area. Great-grandfather remained on the farm in Muscotah, Kansas until he suffered a stroke and came to Kansas City to live with my Grandfather, Gale, and his family. Mother said that though the subject of his family of origin was completely taboo, that on all other scores he was a man of gentle nature and kind disposition. I just wish he had left a few more crumbs along the way to track him by. This is about all I know about John. No brother or sister information available either. If he were an orphan-train child he just might not have ever know. So, other than the fact that he left Cork (was that where they lived or just where they departed from?) and his time in Ohio, that is about all I know. Warmest Regards, Jan Stevens P.S. At the end of August my son, Michael, and I are going to Ireland. Wish I knew where the Man came from it sure would enhance the trip. -----Original Message----- From: Michael Boyle [mailto:Boyle18@msn.com] Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2003 10:25 AM To: BOYLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Boyle] John Boyle - Born April, 1863 Jan, I'm having some trouble connecting the dots on the Boyles as well. Would you happen to have the names of any siblings or parents? Here's what I have... Michael Kevin Boyle (me, b.1952, Kansas City, MO) William Dennis Boyle Jr. (my dad, b.1927, Kansas City, MO) William Dennis Boyle Sr. (grandfather, b.1878, KY?, d.1938, Kansas City, MO)) brothers: Thomas Boyle Jr. (b.1875, ?, d.1931, Kansas City, MO) Henry Boyle-farmed in Missouri Jack (John?) Boyle-a Kansas resident Thomas Boyle Sr. (b.1828 in Ireland, d.1888 in either KCMO or ?) Henry Boyle (1804-1874, Ireland) It's weird, but I have more information on distant relatives than the nearer. Since grandpa died in 1938, I was unable to make any contact with him-and as his dad died in 1888, my dad never knew him! The connection seems to have been lost among the men who waited until they were 50 to have kids. Evidently, Thomas Sr. had 6 sisters (my gr-gr-aunts), 4 of whom immigrated and became nuns in KY-just across the river from Ohio. One of them, Margaret (Sr. Boniface) immigrated in 1865-but they seemed to have all arrived separately-in waves. 2 sisters married in Ireland, 1 stayed and died there, 1 married (Connor or O'Connor) and emigrated to Australia. The immigration for the "sisters" was from Co. Waterford-but my grandfather had indicated to my father that his family originated in Cork. There does seem to be some secrecy among family members as to where they were born, lived and died-and some distance in the relationships. In those days...there was a pioneer mentality-and when you had gotten through the 8th grade, you were on your own-often meaning the end of family relationships. My grandfather William and brother Tommy were close-and were buried next to Thomas Sr., but his death year (1888) may have meant that his body was "moved" to KC-but who knows? This is further complicated by second wives and whose children belong to whom. All very mysterious. Let me know if any bells are rung. Best to you and your family. He immigrated in 1865 when he was only two years old from Cork to the United States. From there is a big blank span of time, though we know he came from Ohio to Atchison County, Kansas when he was between 16 - 20 years of age. I believe I have located him on the 1880 census in Harmony, Clark Township Ohio - minus his parents. He married my great-grandmother, Mary Eliza Olden, in Kansas and they farmed and raised a family in Muscotah, Kansas. According to family lore, John would never talk about his parents (I suspect he may have been an orphan-train child) and disavowed religion of all kind. So there it is, mostly a blank wall. If this triggers a suspicion of connection with any Boyles who may read this, please get in touch.
