Looking for any information on John Boyle who was born in April of 1863 in Ireland. He immigrated in 1865 when he was only two years old from Cork to the United States. From there is a big blank span of time, though we know he came from Ohio to Atchison County, Kansas when he was between 16 - 20 years of age. I believe I have located him on the 1880 census in Harmony, Clark Township Ohio - minus his parents. He married my great-grandmother, Mary Eliza Olden, in Kansas and they farmed and raised a family in Muscotah, Kansas. According to family lore, John would never talk about his parents (I suspect he may have been an orphan-train child) and disavowed religion of all kind. So there it is, mostly a blank wall. If this triggers a suspicion of connection with any Boyles who may read this, please get in touch. Regards, Jan Stevens
Jan, I'm having some trouble connecting the dots on the Boyles as well. Would you happen to have the names of any siblings or parents? Here's what I have... Michael Kevin Boyle (me, b.1952, Kansas City, MO) William Dennis Boyle Jr. (my dad, b.1927, Kansas City, MO) William Dennis Boyle Sr. (grandfather, b.1878, KY?, d.1938, Kansas City, MO)) brothers: Thomas Boyle Jr. (b.1875, ?, d.1931, Kansas City, MO) Henry Boyle-farmed in Missouri Jack (John?) Boyle-a Kansas resident Thomas Boyle Sr. (b.1828 in Ireland, d.1888 in either KCMO or ?) Henry Boyle (1804-1874, Ireland) It's weird, but I have more information on distant relatives than the nearer. Since grandpa died in 1938, I was unable to make any contact with him-and as his dad died in 1888, my dad never knew him! The connection seems to have been lost among the men who waited until they were 50 to have kids. Evidently, Thomas Sr. had 6 sisters (my gr-gr-aunts), 4 of whom immigrated and became nuns in KY-just across the river from Ohio. One of them, Margaret (Sr. Boniface) immigrated in 1865-but they seemed to have all arrived separately-in waves. 2 sisters married in Ireland, 1 stayed and died there, 1 married (Connor or O'Connor) and emigrated to Australia. The immigration for the "sisters" was from Co. Waterford-but my grandfather had indicated to my father that his family originated in Cork. There does seem to be some secrecy among family members as to where they were born, lived and died-and some distance in the relationships. In those days...there was a pioneer mentality-and when you had gotten through the 8th grade, you were on your own-often meaning the end of family relationships. My grandfather William and brother Tommy were close-and were buried next to Thomas Sr., but his death year (1888) may have meant that his body was "moved" to KC-but who knows? This is further complicated by second wives and whose children belong to whom. All very mysterious. Let me know if any bells are rung. Best to you and your family. If you want more about orphan trains see this site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/7446/orphantrains.html There are other sites where people can communicate if they feel their ancestor was on an orphan train. Thank you.
