Dear Boyle listers: I'm setting up some Web resources for folks who are interested in the idea of taking a DNA test for genealogical purposes. This is an option for males with the surname Boyle ... it involves identifying markers on the Y-chromosome that don't change much over time. If you and another male-line Boyle descendant have identical markers, that could serve as an indication that you share a common ancestor some generations back. (For female Boyles interested in this sort of thing, you generally would recruit a male brother or Boyle-line cousin to take the test.) I'm setting up the project through Family Tree DNA, which would offer a discount on the test ... that involves receiving a test kit, swabbing your cheek at home, then sending the results in. With the discount, the most basic test costs $99, I believe (I'm still working out the details on this, so I'll have more precise numbers after next week).
