    1. [BOYLE-L] POSTING ADDRESS
    2. Pat Connors
    3. There seems to be some confusion on how to post a message to our list. When sending a message to post, use the following address: [email protected] Do NOT use "request" when posting to the list. You only use "request" when subbing or unsubbing. If you are like me, you will need to change the address in your Address Book. We now are over 65 members and today I received three posts that were addressed wrongly. I wrote to the addressees and hope to see them posted shortly. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pat (Patraigin) Connors, California Siochain Leat (peace be with you) Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:[email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    1. [BOYLE-L] BOYLE in NY
    2. I have traced my gggfather, Christopher Stephen BOYLE, back to NY through a copy of his Michigan death record. Christopher S. BOYLE was born somewhere in NY around Dec 26, 1829. His parents were John and Bridget BOYLE. Bridget's maiden name is probably QUIRK. Christopher had at least one son, William C. BOYLE, who was born in Benton Harbor, MI probably in the time frame of 1858 to 1865 since he married on Nov 25, 1885. Christopher operated a store on Main St. in Benton Harbor from around 1873-1889. If anyone has links or ties to my BOYLEs, please contact me. Thank you. Francis William (Bill) Boyle, Jr. [email protected]

    1. [BOYLE-L] Jonathan BOYLE
    2. John & Nancy Malmquist
    3. Hi! Looking for info on Jonathan BOYLE and Elizabeth HUNT. They apparently lived near the Pennsylvania/ Virginia state line in 1790. Census records say their son John BOYLE was born in 1790 in Virginia. They moved to Knox County, Ohio about 1806 and Jonathan BOYLE died in 1808 in Knox County, Ohio. I have been able to trace some of the children and slowing adding more to the family. History books tell of the settlement of Scot/Irish in the late 1600's and early 1700's as gradually coming west across Pennsylvania into Ohio, then into Indiana & Illinois. These were people who had left Scotland after loosing everything to England and going to Northern Ireland. Most of them were farmers and protestants, mostly Presbyterian. With crowded conditions they then came to America in search of land. Most of them were sturdy, hard working people. Thus they were originally from Scotland. This sounds like how my BOYLE's came to America. They were farmers and connected with the Methodist or Presbyterian Church. History books also tell of the early settlers (including BOYLE & HUNT) coming from Greene and Washington Counties in Pennsylvania. I am interested in info as to who Jonathan BOYLE's and Elizabeth HUNT's parents were, where Jonathan & Elizabeth lived, when & where they were married, and someone who is researching this family. 1. [BOYLE-L] 'Royal BOYLEs'
    2. Dave Rossiter
    3. Hi List, Pat, has suggested that I mention a 'Royal BOYLE' gedcom file I have on the list. It starts with (from memory) the first Earl of CORK in 16 something and proceeds to the early 20th century, including lots of other Earls of Cork, Viscounts Orrey and miscellaneous other nobility etc. I extracted the information from a number of sources when my wife thought she might be related to a BOYLE at Catsle Fraser, nr Aberdeen, Scotland. I remember hearing that these BOYLEs originally came from England and their name was adopted by local people on their estates, how true this is I have no idea. However, if anyone would like a copy of this file drop me a line & I'll gladly send it to you - probably next weekend, when I get some time. 2. Donald Boyle
    3. While looking for my family in Stormont County, Ontario I came across the following family and thought it might be of interest to someone. The names Oly and Doly are interesting and I understand that sometimes if the child had the same name as the parent they were given these names to distinguish them but in this case there are two children with the same names as the parents. So they are unusual names. Also as all the children born in Ireland they must have just arrived in 1849-1981 period >From the 1851 Census for Finch Township, Stormont County, Ontario. BOYLE, John, age 32, Margaret, age 30, John, age 11 Oly, age 9 Margaret, age 7 Eliz, age 5 Doly, age 2 All born in Ireland, and religion Scotland Donald J. Boyle Brantford, Ontario, Canada

    3. Pat, I just did a double take!! Your post about Maurice Boyle sure got my attention, even though I cannot connect any of the names to my family. My father's name was J. Maurice Boyle, which he didn't like and changed the Maurice to Morris after an incident with a teacher in high school. Some day I hope to find a Boyle that actually fits into my family. Nancy

    3. Well, we have been an official list now for one week and have close to 50 members. I have seen some posts and as the list continues to grow, those who have posted in the past, may want to re-post for the new members. I will give you reports on the number of members so you get an idea about how many newbies we get. We are being advertised by Rootsweb, so I look forward to more members. To start off our second week, I would like to share this poem that I found on another list. It certainly speaks to the many frustrations of us genealogists. The Elusive Ancestor I went looking for an ancestor. I cannot find him still. He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will. He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences. He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. census. He always kept his luggage packed, this man had no fame. And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name. His parents came from Europe. They should be upon some list, of passengers to the U.S.A., but somehow they got missed. And no one else in the world is searching for this man. So I play "geneasolitaire" to find him if I can. I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed; but the weather took the engraving, and some vandals took the rest. He died before the county clerks decided to keep records. No family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts. To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans - Just to give me one more problem, betrothed a girl named JONES. by: Merrell Kenworth -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pat (Patraigin) Connors, California Siochain Leat (peace be with you) Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:[email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    2. John Mellon
    3. Samuel BOYLE, born abt. 1830, Ireland, possibly Donegal, arrived in NYC in 1850 with wife Catherine McCAULEY. The family left in 185l to join two brothers in Philadelphia. The brothers names are currently unknown, but one brother's name may have been Charles Boyle. All were employed as stone cutters. Samuel died in Philadelphia in 1857 leaving his widow and two sons: The oldest was JOHN J. BOYLE (1851-1917) famous Phila. artist known for his statues of Ben Franklin now on the U of P. campus along with other statues in Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington D.C. He married Elizabeth Carrol in Philadelphia in 1882. The youngest son, my grandfather, WILLIAM D. BOYLE, (1852-1905) was the owner of several taverns, one at 21st and Passyunk Ave. in Philadelphia. He married Ellen Connor in 1881. I would be happy to hear from anyone researching the Boyle line and particularily those in Philadelphia or elsewhere who may be related to the two Boyle brothers whom Samuel joined in 1851. 3. Pat, When I discovered the List for BOYLE, I was excited as I have hit a 'brick wall' in my research. The messages that have come through so far, are of no help to me and they appear to be Catholic for religion. My BOYLE family is Methodist as far back as I go. Names in my research are BOYLE, HUNT, MERRITT, OLIVER, RUMMEL and etc. Jonathan BOYLE and Elizabeth HUNT lived near the PA/VA border when son John was born in 1790, They moved to Knox County Ohio in the early 1800's and Jonathan BOYLE died in 1808 leaving a young family of seven (7) children. I have a copy of his will from Knox County, Ohio. History books state that Jonathan BOYLE & wife were natives of New Jersey. I cannot or have not found anything before 1790 on this family. John BOYLE married Nancy MERRITT (date unknown) and they lived in Marion County, Ohio in what would be Morrow County, Ohio today. They moved to DeKalb County, Indiana in 1837, as did several of their children (maybe all). They are buried in Concord Twp, DeKalb County, Indiana. Their son, Jonathan BOYLE b 12 Feb 1815 in Knox County, Ohio married Elizabeth Oliver, 25 Feb 1836 in Marion County, Ohio and moved to DeKalb County, Indiana in 1837. He married (a second time) 30 June 1850 in DeKalb County, Indiana to Susanna Rummel. He had a family by both wives. Jonathan & both wives are buried in Concord Twp, DeKalb County, Indiana. This second Jonathan Boyle is my gggrandfather. I am still excited about this list and hope that someone else is researching these same people and can be of help in breaking through the wall. I might add that BOYLE has been spelled BOYLES in some records. Nancy

I will try to give a little history on my O'Donnell Family. As far back as I can go, we come from County Donegal. A short biography was written for a county history book for Yellowstone Country, Montana in 1907, about my Grandfather Ed O'Donnell. He provided all the information about his life in Ireland before coming to Montana in 1884. His grandparents were Louis and Mary O'Donnell. His parents were John O'Donnell and Ann Boyle, daughter of Neal Boyle and Miss Sharkey. He listed her as Miss Sharkey so he must not have remembered his grandmother's first name. He told of going to school in County Donegal and working on his parents farm. His birth place was listed and Dungloe of Tubberkeen. He was born April 5 1855. We know he had a sister Bridget born about 1859. She was married in the Catholic Church in Dungloe, Tubberkeen on Feb 16, 1882 to John O'Donnell son of Daniel. They had 8 children, Mary, Annie, Condy,Edward, Cassie, Bridget, Lizzie and Daniel. Some of these children came to the US. They were brought over by my Grandfather Ed. Some stayed in Ireland, and we still have Lizzie Kelly's family living there now. Bridget's daughter Mary had a daughter, Minnie born 16 Dec. 1911. We have a copy of the birth certificate and it does not list a father. Mary came to the US in about 1912 and Minnie was raised by her aunt Cassie, in Dungloe. Minnie married a John O'Donnell. He was deceased at the time of her death in 1977. Her address is listed on her death certificate as Quay Rd. Dungloe Rd. We think Ed had another sister Mary, born about 1867. There may have been other brothers and sisters. We are searching for those now. Ed became a prosperous rancher and farmer in Billings Montana. He met and married Mary Loftus, daughter of Patrick Loftus and Bridget ( Delia ) Sullivan in May of 1891. Mary Loftus was born in Bellmullet, County Mayo and came to Montana with her family in 1883. Please note that Montana did not become a state until 1889. They were some of the first pioneers and have pioneer status in the State on Montana. My grandfather also operated the city cemetery also known as O'Donnell Cemetery, now Mountview Cemetery Ed and Mary O'Donnell had 17 children. My father is the 17th. Ed died in April of 1916. Some of our family has been to Ireland and we do know we still have some family living there. It is my hope to visit there in a few years. I am anxious to learn more about the family that stayed in Ireland. Thanks for letting me tell my story. Patty O' Donnell Dietz, Billings Montana --part0_911687761_boundary--
