Hi, Looking for People that have a Boyle born in Canada that married to a Howard. Melvin E BOYLE married Barbra A HOWARD
Hi Nancy. My Boyle came directly to Michigan from Ireland because he knew a friend who had come over a few months earlier and he went to Michigan. We understood that he was from Mulnivatt (sp) Kilkenny, but that was where born. It is possible that his family lived in another part of the county after the kids were born. Pat Connors checked for me and he cannot find TOBIAS anywhere in Ireland with the info he has. I have tons of info on him in this country, just not prior to his coming over with his sister, Nellie. Good luck with your search and thanks for the info. I will make a copy of your e-mail and search some of the other areas. Maybe we will be related. I know they were land owners and farmers, their farm called the "Barracks". John, Tobias and Nellie were at least some of the kids' names. Borgans and Kavanaugh were other family names and those families lived in Mulnivatt. Another sister of Tobias' married a COSTELLO. The mother's name was Ivory-last name?? Thanks- Donna :-)

Hi! I have recently joined the Boyle List and I am looking for information about Editha Boyle (b. c 1770 probably in Virginia or Pennsylvania). She was married to a man named Smith, possibly James, who died prior to 1794 and they had at least one son, maybe named James, who may have been killed in 1815 at the Battle of New Orleans. Her second husband was James Walker of Kentucky who came from Pennsylvania and lived in Clarke Co., KY with his first wife. Editha and James were married in 1794 in Bourbon Co., KY and had children: Robert, Rawleigh (Rolley), Hiram, Elizabeth, Isabella, Matilda, Olive and Agnes. They later moved to Washington Co., IN. James died in c1832. Editha may have married for a third time and is supposed to have died c 1854 in IN. I would like to learn her parents' names and where they were from and about any siblings. Will look forward to hearing from a distant "cousin"!! Mary F Kelley email address: [email protected]
I am looking for more information on Thomas Boyle and his wife Nora Melvin. Thomas was born in 1852 in Ireland (I would love to know where) and in the 1880 - 1900 census he is in Ottawa County, Michigan with 8 of his 11 sons where he was working as a "section boss". I found this on another list, and believe it will help you understand the GV better. "For the researcher then, a distribution study of any particular surname can be used to prioritize research. It can also be useful as general background information for a family history, showing how common or scarce, widespread or restricted, the name is in Ireland. Sometimes a surname distribution study will yield some real surprises. For example, a recent study of the surname Huntley failed to locate even one citation for that spelling in Griffith's! Two variant spellings were found, but only one citation to each - a Huntly in County Kilkenny and a Hundley in County Sligo. If ones Huntley ancestor left Ireland after Griffith's then one of these would likely be the desired family. When the distribution is this small however, it is difficult to judge where the family may have come from if they left Ireland prior to Griffith's Valuation. Perhaps the whole family left an area, leaving no one of that surname. Even in this case though, some useful information has been garnered--you know that if you find a record of the correct name and time period for your Huntley ancestor in Ireland, it is very likely the correct person, rather than someone coincidentally of the same name. There are two general types of distribution studies possible using Griffith's index. One is a study showing the frequency with which a surname is cited in each of Ireland's 32 counties. This gives a good overview, and helps determine if the name is localized or widespread. The second type of distribution shows how often the name is cited in each parish. There are about 2500 parishes in Ireland, so it is usually not practical to do this type of study for the entire country. If however, the county of origin is known for an ancestor, this kind of study, for one county, can be very useful. A parish by parish distribution study can be especially useful when you know both names for a couple who were married prior to emigrating. Except among the wealthy, most Irish found their mates nearby--often from the same parish or an adjoining one. Comparing the distributions for two names within a county will often limit the area you need to search to just one or two parishes (depending how common the names of course). Once you know where to search, local parish records can be consulted. Distribution studies are not a panacea, but wisely used they may save you a lot of work. When used as general background information, they are always interesting. Now that studies are available at minimal cost, you might want to have one done even if you already know the exact place of origin for your ancestor -- knowing where other members of the family lived can help fill in the "big picture" for you. Remember that distribution studies will not give you the exact place of origin for your ancestors, they will only tell you which places are most likely, so that you can prioritize further research."
Sorry, but the url has changed. I should have checked it before sending. I apologize. Here is the correct url: http://www.exis.net/ahd/monaghan/irishlinks.htm
It has been suggested by a lister to relate where and how I obtained the above cd. It is produced by Broderbund for Family Tree Maker and can be bought from them on line for $60.00. I have found it invaluable in my Irish research and for helping others. It is not perfect, and many will be quick to point out at times it may be inaccurate. But I use it and it has helped me. I have just been corrected that you need to file some paper work in Ireland. The article did not metion that. Sorry Patty
Did you know that you could be an Irish citizen? I just found out today that I was. My parents received a St Patrick's gift Ireland and included is a newspaper article from Dublin. It states that " UNDER IRISH LAW, IF EITHER OF YOUR PARENTS, OR GRANDPARENTS WERE BORN IN IRELAND, THAT YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY AN IRISH CITIZEN.," Since both of my grandparents were born in Ireland, there is not question in my mind. This is called dual citizenship, since I was born in America. Happy St. Patrick's Day from Patty O'Donnell Dietz in Montana seaching O'Donnell, Boyle, Sharkey, Loftus, Sullivan

I am sorry that I gave you info that changed. When I left for work this morning I had full access to the new beta LDS Family Research site. When I got home, I couldn't believe all the email I got that said they were denied access because they didn't have a password or an ID number. This is what I have found out: "Over the weekend, I was able to get to the LDS site but all my queries resulted in "Could not process your request". Today, I was asked for a username and password. So I called the LDS today (at one of the 3 numbers given at http://www.lds.org/en/4_News_Update/19990304_FIGS.html ) to see if I could get in on the beta test. They said that the site had been changed to be "private" for now, and would be open to the public later this month. (Don't know why they couldn't have explained that on the site and saved probably thousands of people from retrying over and over...)" I found this on another list. I am sorry for whatever inconvenience that I caused you. I guess they didn't expect so many hits and got overloaded. It will be one of the things that they need to work out. From what I saw, it was basically like getting on the computer in the FHL (Family History Center at an LSD church). It was had the same kind of search qualities. To me not very sophisticated but workable. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pat (Patraigin) Connors, California Siochain Leat (peace be with you) Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:[email protected] Volunteer of Random Genealogical Kindness at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check out this site. It is a demo only scheduled to be up until 3/28. At the very least, you can use the catalog and get the FHL film and fiche numbers. Saves a lot of time. In the honor of St. Patrick's Day and the overall good feeling of being Irish, I would like to extend my offer to do lookups in the Griffith's Valuation Index CD and the LDS British Isles Vital Records Index. I don't promise results but will look for you. Also, I only do them on weekends, so if you send a request during the week, it will take a few days. Please keep your message short with just the surname and county that you are searching. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pat (Patraigin) Connors, California Siochain Leat (peace be with you) Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:[email protected] Volunteer of Random Genealogical Kindness at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
