    3. I really think this surname list would be more useful if some subscribers added place names and dates, even if approximate, to their postings. The BOYLE name is common enough but, when you add a given name like William or Catherine and fail to give any indication of a place or time, well - the phrase "a needle in a haystack" springs to mind. 1. [BOYLE] Boyles in Clare
    2. A/T Boyle
    3. I'm reaching a plateau in my own search and am hoping someone might have some suggestions... My great-grandparents on the Boyle side were Michael Boyle and Ellen Howe. I have lots of information on the Howe side, thanks to the Clare Heritage Center. (They provided lots of information for the initial fee, so I'd have to say I'm quite pleased with what I got.) Ellen Howe was the daughter of John Howe and Ellen Murrihy of Carrowduff townland, very near Miltown Malbay. She was born in 1832, with several siblings who eventually ended up in DeWitt, Clinton County, Iowa. (If there are any other Howe descendants whose forebears came from that neck of the woods, I'd dearly love to get in contact with you.) Some of the Howe cousins emigrated to Australia and I've been in contact with those descendants as well. Anyway, the Boyle side is fuzzier. We know that Michael Boyle was born in County Clare in 1820 or so... But we don't have any information as to siblings, parentage or a more precise location. Most of the Boyles in Clare in that time frame came from Kilmurry-Ibrickane parish, around Quilty. That's also near Miltown Malbay, and the family lore is that Michael came to America (in 1847) with Ellen and her mother (though that's not for sure). So on that basis, I'm assuming that we're related to the Quilty Boyles. There are similarities in the family's favored given names ... Michael, John, Austin, James (of course, Mary, Ellen and Bridget on the women's side) ... so that's another point in favor of the Quilty connection. The only other clue is that one of the witnesses to Michael and Ellen's wedding in August 1857 (at Sinsinawa Mound in Grant County, Wis.) was named John Boyle. So that's an indication that at least one other family member (a cousin? a brother?) was in the Midwest at that time. It would be a dream if there were a descendant of such a John Boyle out there who had some more info. Along the way I've collected a goodly amount of information about the Quilty Boyles ... there are descendants in America, Britain and Australia (as well as Ireland, of course), and I've been in touch with some of them. I still need to update my Web site at http://family.boyle.net with all the new information I've gotten this summer ... but if you're interested in following up on any of these connections, please feel free to write me. Michael and Ellen Boyle, by the way, lived in Dubuque County, Iowa, until 1858, then moved out to a farm in Garryowen, Jackson County, Iowa ... the farm where I grew up. I've tracked down pretty much all of Michael's descendants ... Boyles as well as Reddins, Brownes, Kinsellas, Deluherys, Shanahans, etc., etc. If you're related through Michael Boyle's descendants I've probably got you on my list already. But if you're curious about anything, just drop me a line or check out the Web site. Many thanks to Pat for presiding over both these lists (Boyle and Clare)... 3. Hi to all, As I've been adding info to my data, I've been pondering John and Nancy Boyle's family. I lack proof but will share what I am thinking from the information I have at hand. 1830 Census for Canaan Twp, Marion County, Ohio shows John Boyle and the following info: 1 male 10-15 Moses born abt 1819 would be 11y 1 male 15-20 Jonathan born 12 Feb 1815 would be 15y 1 male 40-50 John (father) born 13 June 1790 would be 40y 2 female under 5 Rhoda born in 1830 would be under 1y unknown child 2 female 5-10 unknown child Hannah, birth & marriage unknown 1 female 10-15 Sarah birth abt 1817 would be abt 13 y 1 female 30-40 Nancy (mother) born 1796 would be 34y There are 2 sons not accounted for in this census. John W. was born 1831 Ephraim was born 1833 There is 1 daughter not accounted for in this census Mary birth unknown and married 5 Dec 1829 This makes 10 children for John and Nancy Boyle. As I said at the beginning I do not have proof that all of these children belong, but they do fit. Feel free to set me straight or correct me as the actual census does not give family members names in 1830. The next census I have is for 1850 Concord Twp, DeKalb County, Indiana showing: John Boyles, age 60 Nancy, age 54 John, age 18 Rhoda, age 20 Ephraim, age 17 If any of these names sound familiar and you are researching BOYLE, I would like to hear from you. I have other information to share. Nancy [email protected]

    3. triocha Lunasa, De' Luan( 30 August, Monday) In 1820 James Wilson, Scottish patriot, was executed by hanging, for his role in the "Rising of 1820." This uprising had to do with high taxation, essentially denial of the right to vote ( e.g. in the town of Kilmarnock with 13,000 inhabitants only one had the right to vote). Disatisfaction had been brewing for several years. Pampleteers calling for reform were prosecuted without trial. The uprising primarily was limited to demonstrations. The government sent in troops. Unfortunately , Tranter doesbn't mention it in his book. My only source is a history of Kilmarnock written in the mid'1800's. submitted by John Laughland
