The focus of my research shifted to Virginia about the time of the Revolutionary War. I don't recall any Thorntons associated with my Boyds. I'm guessing your Joseph Thornton Boyd would have been born in the 1780's? Robert and Martha would have been newly married? Probably early twenties? I would check for father Robert Boyd's service in the War. And not just Pennsylvania. Try Maryland or even Virginia records. The entire area around Allegheny county was once claimed by Virginia. The entire southwest corner of Pa. was claimed by Governor Dunmore of Virginia. The early settlers often had dual deeds for both Pa. and Va. Dunmore claimed everything west of the Laurel Mountain (near Ligonier) and south of the Ohio River. That's half of Pittsburg. Sorry I'm not much help.
