    3. Harriet and Colin These are the details I have on that George Boyd from W. P. Boyd book of 1912. 2/103 BOYD OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE* The origin of George Boyd would appear to be from Boston Massachusetts. There was no mention beyond this. R1 George Boyd, b 171x, d 17xx, m 21/8/1730 (Old Church records Newington), Abegail Hoyt, dau of Hoyt, of Newington, New Hampshire, bc 1710, d 8/9/1800, bu North Cemetery Portland, NH, and had issue:- She m 2ndly 17xx, Mr Peavy. He went to England, it was thought because he had Tory proclivities at the time of the Revolutionary War. He, at that time, left his family in the old Boyd family mansion, intending to return to Portsmouth after awhile. He was the wealthiest man in Portsmouth and lived in great elegance in the grand old Boyd mansion which is still standing. Guerlain, widow of a Parisian Banker, dau of Guerlain, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had no issue:- ? [Lived: Portland, Maine ] - He was fitted for College, Exeter, New Hampshire and then graduated from Bordmans College in 1810, when he went abroad and remained a year at St. Petersburg, Russia. He returned during the war of 1812-14, enlisted in the United States Army and was made a Lieutenant of the Infantry. He also served as an aide-de-camp to General Thomas A. Smith and was also at one time Assistant Adjutant General of the 8th Military District. In 1847 he resigned from the army to engage in commerce and resided in New Orleans for a short time. He left an adopted son who bore his name and lived in Mobile, Alabama. He bequeathing to Bordman College his whole property of more than $10,000, burdened only with a small annuity to the use of his infirmed wife. This gift is called the Boyd fund. George William Boyd above, was the last one bearing the name of this Boyd family and his tombstone can be seen in the Rice and Goddard family lot in the South Cemetery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. T7 Supply Boyd, b 17xx, d 17xx, aged 14 years. [Lived: ] T8 Henry Cruger Boyd, b 17xx, d 17xx, aged 11 years. [Lived: ] T9 George Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, aged 32 years, m ? [Lived: ] T10 Pheobe Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, aged 17 years [Lived: ] The Rambles about Portsmouth, in two volumes, by Charles Brewster, gives quite an account of this family. [NEED TO OBTAIN CORRECT REFERENCE FOR THIS BOOK] Would this Charles Brewster be a relative of Jane Brewster, above? Source: History of the Boyd family and descendants, with historical sketches of the ancient family of Boyd's in Scotland from the year 1200, and those of Ireland from the year 1680, with records of their descendants in Kent, New Windsor, Middletown and Salem, N. Y., Boston, Mass., Northumberland County, Pa., and sketches of those from the southern and western states from 1740 to 1912. By William P. Boyd ... Rochester, N. Y., John P. Smith printing company, 1912, pp 152-155. You can see that W. P. Boyd that "his family burial lot in the North Cemetery of Portland, New Hampshire, where it can be seen today (1887) with his coat-of-arms upon it." So it would be interesting to see if there were four additional children who may have died shortly after birth. However with 3 of the last 4 children dying before they got to marrying age might suggest "all" his children are listed. So if your Boyd the ship builder had 14 children MIGHT BE BE A BROTHER to the above George Boyd of Portsmouth? W. P. Boyd only show one son for George's father George Boyd and Abigail Hoyt. So would the North Cemetery have other Boyd families buried in it that might show light on this? Hope that this will help in your research. We also know that there were quite a number of Boyd sea Captains during the 1700's, so it would not be too far for one or two to be ship builders. If I recall, New England supplied timber for ships masts. George Boyd, (he was the father of William Boyd and grandfather of Col. George W. Boyd now living in Portland, Me.) purchased the mill seat, now the Raynes mansion and shipyard, of Peter Livius, somewhere between 1767 and 1770 His wife is Jane Brewster, daughter of Joseph Brewster. They had five sons and five daughters. Mary married Joseph Champney, and died since 1850; Jane married Dr. John Goddard, and died in 1790, aged twenty-seven years; Phebe died young; Abigail, married Capt. Mackay, and afterwards Capt. Samuel Ham, who built the Woodbury mansion; Submit married Hon. John S. Sherburne, and died in 1803, aged twenty-eight years; Joseph died after arriving at years of manhood; George died unmarried; William married a daughter of Capt. Thomas Martin, and left one son, Capt. George W., now living, and the only descendant who bears the name of Boyd; Supply and Henry Lucas died young. George died on his return voyage from London, and his tomb is in the Old North Cemetery along with the coat-of-arms (online but hard to see-faded) On Sat, Nov 23, 2013 at 4:39 AM, Harriet E.
