    3. Colin Brooks can you remember what religion the above two Churches were. I think that they were both Church of Ireland? Can you find your note book form 2007 in which you copied the Boyd/Kennedy Grave at Dunluce? There seems to be a NUMBER OF BOYD BRANCHES in Ireland ( that appear to have come form Scotland) that were Church of Ireland or Church of England in Scotland that we need to identify. I will have to do some research and start a list to post to the Boyd list so that others can add to it. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

    3. Daryl I am not sure. There are quite a number of both C of I and Presbyterian Churches in Ballymoney. It has only been in the last few weeks that I have begun to think of those Boyd Branches that might not be Presbyterian but Church of Ireland. The Boyds would have been Catholic in Scotland until the 5th Lord Boyd, Robert Boyd. Although he was a "Councillor" to Mary Queen of Scots during period of imprisonment in England and 30 named Boyds fought for her at Langside in 1568, I have found a source that said that he was a Protestant and had visited Knox the night before Knox died. It seemed that from this point that the Heads of the Clan became strong Presbyterians but we seem to have "several" Branches that were other religions such as Church of Ireland/England, Quaker, and Huguenot. So it is the origins of each of these three groups that we need to look at and where they might have come from, and which family branches formed of these groups. I will try to make a start to a list this week. 3. Mike, There is no Kennedy at the Dunluce cemetery that I can find. There is the Kar/Kerr and Boyd connection. maybe that is a Derrykeighan tombstone. (I am in Florida and my books are in Pennsylvania) Your question as to religion is unfortunately not an easy answer. Like most parish churches in Northern Ireland, you can not dictate a specific religion without a specific time frame. The church connected to that old Dunluce graveyard near the castle (that we visited) has been Catholic, Presbyterian, Church of Ireland. A quick splash of Covenanter can also be found pre-1772 when it's pastor moved on to SC. History proves (in Ulster) that one family and even one Pastor can be members of the Church of Ireland AND Presbyterian all within one lifetime. Our Boyd's are one of those specific families. So I will say that from settlement until post 1641, both churches were Presbyterian. After 1641 they became "official" Church of Ireland locations. However (and it's huge for these people) the minister was Presbyterian! And they stayed that way until late 1690s/early 1700 when they had governmental approval to reestablish Presbyterian churches. This is when they split by the building of separate churches. This is also the time that the functional elements of the old churches began to literally decay. Parish's as geographical locations are relatively fixed, old buildings fall apart and few from the 1600's were "rebuilt". A new church was always a better option. By the 1800's both parishes had separate Cof I, Presb. , and RC churches and that has stayed the course. With freedom of choice came freedom of options. Until 1720s, you had neither in Ulster, unless you lived near to a large population (think Coleraine, Londonderry, Antrim, Belfast, Ballymoney etc.). Burials also did NOT prove your religious choice. Mixed faith burials occurred all over Ulster until the 1800's. It was common and accepted. Regardless of the Genealogy Fact that you follow ancestors religion choices to determine family lines (which is absolutely legitimate); in ULSTER during the 1600's and most of the 1700's, there is NO proof that a persons choice of church worship indicates his direct ancestral line. There is absolute proof, that MANY Boyds and there wives moved amongst the Protestant religions, based on their personal choice more then a family choice. Some even switched in their lifetimes from one to another and back again. All major Protestant religions in Ulster during this time frame have significant Boyd membership and even leadership- Presbyterian; Quaker; Church of Ireland; Covenanter.
