A few days ago, I got a very nice Christmas letter from Dr. David Boyd of Abington Oxfordshire, England which gave me a direct Boyd chart of his family of John Boyd who married Mary Stewart on 10 June 1712 at Saint Dunstan Church Stepney, London. The details that David provided on this John Boyd are:- John = Mary Stewart J – B abt 1687 (Airth, Scotland) J – Bptsd 25/2/1687 (Airth, Scotland) <<Julian Calender. New year’s day on 25th March until Gregorian calendar adopted in 1752. >> M – B abt 1682 M – Bptzd 10/6/1689 (St Mary, Whitechapel) M 10/6/1712 (St. Dunstan, Ch., Stepney) J – D 11/1745 (Montague Street, Spitalfields) J – Buried 24/11/1745 (Christ Church, Spitalfields) M – D 15/7/1746 (Norton Folgate, Spitalfields) M – Buried 17/7/1746 (Christ Church, Spitalfields) Trade – Weaver M – Last will – 18/6/1746 John probably came to London in 1706 [Where J is John Boyd & M is Mary Stewart ] Then in the box above that it gives John’s parents George = Elspet (Elizabeth) Johnston (or Johnstoun) G – B 1660 (Airth, Scotland) G – Bptzd (30/9/1660 (Airth, Scotland), E – B 1665 (Airth, Scotland), - Unfonfirmed M 4/6/1686 (Airth, Scotland), G – D 1712 (Chester County, PA, US) – Unconfirmed E – D 1705 (Sadsbury, Chester Co.; PA, US ) Unconfirmed Could have travelled with family to US via Ireland, setting after 1694. Part of a post Battle of Boyne re-settlement? [Where G is George Boyd and E Elizabeth Johnston ] As soon as I saw Elizabeth Johnson, I knew that I had a possible link to the family of George and Isabella Boyd of Compass, Chester County, PA that I have partly outlined Family Chapter 5/266 >From that Chapter I have these three children of George and Elizabeth of Airth, Stirlingshire Q1 George Boyd, bc 1661 (Parish of Airth, Stirlingshire), d / /17xx ( , Ireland?), bu , mc 168x (Anglican Church, Airth?), Elizabeth Johnston, dau of and (nee ) Johnston, b / /166x ( ), d / /17xx ( , Ireland?), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] R3? John Boyd, b / /1687 (Airth) – Bapt 25 Feb 1687 R5? George Boyd, b / /1691 (Airth), - Bapt 17 May 1692 R6? James Boyd, b / /1693 (Airth) – 3 Jan. 1694 Remember these dates are under the Julian Calender. New year’s day on 25th March until Gregorian calendar adopted in 1752. So there might be some confusion on who the year of 1686-87 was written down by the researcher/recorders The last two of these entries are from a private family tree, so I can pass on the LDS Batch number for these entries to anyone who links that they might be connected to them. The family of John Boyd in London were Church of England. The same religion as for George Boyd’s family in America. I know that quite a number of George Boyd’s family in the USA gave done a DNA test, so it will be interesting to see how your results compare with Dr David Boyd’s DNA test and that we think that the two “paper” trees meet with George Boyd and Elizabeth Johnston. However, of the eight children that Dr David has found for John Boyd and Mary Stewart, there was no child called George Boyd. John’s eldest known son was a John Boyd, born 1715. This does not follow the naming pattern. David also has a further two more generations of this tree going back to about 1615. While many of us have ASSUMED that all Boyd families from mid to late 1600’s were Presbyterians, I am finding that there seem to have been a good number of Church of England Boyd families in Scotland. I do not know why this is the case, but that will require further research for another time. And secondly, do any of our members come from a James Boyd, born in about 1693 in Scotland or in Airth? We would like to also hear from you as well. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society 24/12/2013
