This is one of three Boyd brothers how went to New Windsor, NY in the 1750’s, when their elder brother Samuel Boyd of New York City, who was a successful tailor in that City, sent funds back to Ireland for his brothers to come to New York city. This Robert Boyd, is thought to have been born in 1703. Current research, indicates that he was born in Ballyhalbert, County Down. We are not sure if this was the Townland, the Village or the Parish? Unfortunately, none of the data so far found, tell us whom his parents are or where they came from in County Down. Sometime in the 1730’s he married Jannet McAllister, most likely about 1732 or earlier, but again nothing is known of her parents or which church in or around Ballyhalbert they might have got married in. Robert Boyd is buried in the Little Britain Cemetery, NY State and it is assumed that his wife is also buried there with him. It is not known which ship they sailed on from Belfast on 6 August 1753 to New York City. There are only three children know to have been born to Robert and Jannet, which is a very small family for the period (i) Robert Boyd (1734-1804), who married first Miss Smith and secondly Eleanor Cockle, daughter of John and Ruth Cockle. It is expected that both marriages took place in New Windsor. (ii) Mary Boyd (1738-1777) married in 1762 at the (First and Second Presbyterian Church, New York City), George Harris. They had known children, Jannet, Robert, Agnes, Elinor, Jane (b 1774-1783), Elizabeth (1775-1783) and Susana (b 1776). (ii) Janet Boyd (173x-1781), who married Robert Andrews. There are no known children for Janet and Robert. If you belong to this family of Robert and Jannet I would like to hear from you please. Or if you belong to any of the spouse families that married the various Boyd, I would also like hear from you as well please. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
