Are there different qualities of archival papers, and should I copy everything, even the ones which are not census forms? I have BIG folders of lateral branches also, but right now I want to preserve my direct line for my descendants. I'm 91 years old, so I had better hurry!" I am wondering if there are any on this Boyd list who are willing to help Phyllis. She's in Connecticut, but there may be a way to help her, even long distance. Ideas? Aye, Lauren
University Products is the company I use for archival paper. If you belong to Ancestry.com, or if your library has a subscription, you can download those census records quickly. Many are also available on Family Search (LDS). Hi Lauren, I served in the NH Legislature and as president of our local historical society which has preserved a lot of documents. I don't know how dark her documents are but if they were bought from a state archives they might replace them for her. When our archivist met with us in committee he told us that computer disks after about ten years get a mold and can't be used plus the change sin the computer programs sometimes won't read the disk, so to store all documentation on acid free paper and don't put anything in plastic sleeves. If I were Phyllis I would call her state archivist and discuss the problem or even the library. We have a company in Maine that has done some saving of old records and then there's a really good company in Essex, VT and they have saved old scrap books that had stuff glued or scotch taped in and turned brittle and orange brown. Hope this helps. Harriet in NH On Wednesday, January 15, 2014 11:54 PM, Kathy Manning <[email protected]> wrote: University Products is the company I use for archival paper. This will be a problem for quite a number of researchers who copied material in the 1970's and 1980's. Especailly when copy material from microfilm. microfishe. The photocopying paper of that period, I understand oxidise when light hits it and turns block after a period. When I found that out about 20 years ago, I recopied these pages through a normal photocopier, which seems to work. So are there anyone out there who can provide advise on who best to store the data that we each collect. Phyllis, you MAY BE ABLE to copy these pages with a normal copier, but use the light exposure. Although they sound like the have gone to far to be saved. Thank you Mike. The census forms are too dark to copy, so I will have to go back into the census forms and recopy them. Lauren has helped me quite a bit. I didn't know the difference between acid free paper and Archival paper. I do appreciate your help and that of any more of our Boyd cousins. Thank you again.
