When President Washington authorized the first official national census in 1790, the population of the United States was approximately three million whites and their one million slaves. The average BOYD family had 5.8 members. There was a total of 309 BOYD families concentrated primarily in Pennsylvania (102), North Carolina (41), South Carolina (39), Maryland and Virginia (29 each), and New York (25), with an additional 34 families distributed in the six other new states. There were also 1,498 adult single and independent BOYDS not members of the above-mentioned households. BOYD was not one of the numberically more prominent families in the census. (Nor was BOIT, which had a total of 129 families with the largest single concentration in North Carolina (20). Both families have the exact same coat of arms, with only one basis design for that coat of arms: unescapable proof that Boit and BOYD are only spelling variations.) I do not know how may of the 730 Boyd families that I have might have been listed in this Census. So now might be a good time to start a project of asking the list if any of American cousins can go back to 1790 and make a connection to those families listed in the Census. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
I would dearly love to connect my Boyd ancestors to a family in the 1790 census, but unfortunately, I've hit a brick wall with my great-grandfather, William Fisher Boyd, who was born in Illinois, Tennessee, or Kentucky in 1848 and died in St. Louis, Missouri in 1925. I've posted his data on this list before, but never gotten any useful responses. Bruce Boyd St. Louis, MO
