>From my various trips to Northern Ireland, I am aware that a number of Boyd’s were Officers for the defenders of Londonderry City during the siege and some of these were Captains One Boyd Officer was killed in his house – in the street that ran down to the Gate at the River’s edge. Can anyone on either list know any of these Boyd Officers? >From "The Boyd family", by Arthur S. Boyd, jr. 1924 book, page 23, it says “Who Captain James married is not known, but he had at least three sons: James (2) William (3), and John 4.” Arthur Boyd, deals with the family of the son James Boyd and only mentions that James had the two brothers, William of RI and John of Boston. While Richard G. Boyd of Mt Morris, MI in his book A History of the Boyd Family, 1993, outlines the family of “A” John Boyd – whom I think claims is the son of a Captain James Boyd. However, if I recall correctly, there is no proof or data that shows that the Arthur Boyd’s John Boyd is the same person as Richard Boyd’s John Boyd. But I do accept that we have a John Boyd, who married Margaret Long and lived in Shelburne Falls, Franklin County, MA, family whose father is most likely to be a James Boyd Both books CLAIM that the father of these three sons, was a Captain James Boyd of Ireland who was the first Earl of Kilmarnock, William Boyd’s son. It is known that the Earl’s son James Boyd, was buried in May 1702 at Old Lenzie Church in East Dumbartonshire. However, in the invitation to his funeral, there was no mention of “a wife or children”. While I agree that the father of these three sons IS MOST LIKELY “A JAMES BOYD” and perhaps even a Captain James Boyd, I THINK that he may therefore have served during the Siege of Londonderry City, rather than be the Earl’s son. So this is the area we need to explore to see if there were any Captain James Boyd’s who might have served in Londonderry City during the Siege and therefore might might be the father of these two families outlined in these publications .
