During my visit to Philadelphia in June 2013 I found this series of Books Cherokee By Blood, Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U. S. Court of Claims, 1906-1910, Volume 1, Applications 1 to 1550, Jerry Wright Jordon, There were about 10 or so volumes that I went through looking for Boyd entries and found a number. However, they gave only parents and children but nothing that showed their link back to a Boyd family. As you will notice this material is for the “Eastern Cherokee”, so my mind asks if there is an “WESTERN CHEROKEE” nation.? (Being any uninformed outsider) Over the last 15 years that I have been on the Boyd list, I have seen a number of claims that family say their ancestor was a Cherokee Indian. So are their other reference Books that members need to consult? I can’t recall any individual Boyd family histories that make any claims. So was this covered up a 100 years ago, when people started to write up their families? We know that quite a large number of (European) Boyd families moved into Virginia, North and South Carolina’s, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky from the early 1700’s to the late 1700’s and so have taken an Indian spouse. So can we develop a list of reference books on the Cherokee nation that future Boyd researchers could use when they find out that GGGG grandfather/mother was a Cherokee Indian. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Mike, This is a hot button topic. I live on a reservation in Mississippi, my husband is Choctaw, and there is a joke amongst the Native Americans about people that claim to be Cherokee, people making this claim usually say that their great grandmother was a Cherokee princess. Impossible as there was no royalty in the tribes. In order to be "valid", one must have an ancestor on the Federal Rolls, like the Dawes Rolls, and paperwork in order to trace back to this ancestor. Just because someone doesn't have paperwork doesn't necessarily mean they don't have Cherokee heritage, but it does mean they won't be able to enroll in the tribe. These are the three federally recognized Cherokee Nations: The Cherokee Nation, in Tahlequah, OK, is the largest of the three, The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians is also in Tahlequah and the third one is the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, in Cherokee, North Carolina. I have a list of Boyds attempting to enroll but don't have it handy. I believe they were all rejected. Not a waste, however, as valuable genealogical information was collected at the time of application, such as, siblings, parents, etc. Dy On Thu, Feb 13, 2014 at 4:47 PM, Mike Boyd <[email protected]> wrote: > During my visit to Philadelphia in June 2013 I found this series of Books > > Cherokee By Blood, Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U. Dy, If you have a list of Boyds (when it IS handy!) please share it with us. I have that Cherokee N. C. story too without the "Princess" part! My Boyds moved through S.C., Georgia and into Alabama. If you need help with your list, let me know--I would be happy to help if I can. Darlene Amark On 2/13/2014 11:06 PM, Dy wrote: > Mike, > > This is a hot button topic.
