During my trip to the USA in June 2013, I visited the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and found this direct Boyd tree:- 1. Moses Boyd, m ???; 2. Sarah Boyd, m Adam Black; 3. James Black, m Jane Lindsay; 4. Margaret Black, m John Crawford; 5. Martha Lindsay Crawford, m Henry Clay Greenewalt; 6. Frank Lindsay Greenewalt, m Mary E. Hallock (?); 7. Crawford H. Greenewalt, m Margaretta Lammot du Pont 8. Nancy Crawford Greenewalt David Greenewalt Crawford H. Greenewalt, Jr. On a second page titled “York Co., Wills” it has “Moses Boyd Dec 29, 1777, Proved Jan 10, 1778 Ex. Wm McClean & James Black (Cumberland township) Wife Catharine Boyd Children – Margaret, Sarah & Jane.” All this was in a folder marked “Boyd, York Co., PA.” While the only date on these two pages was the date for proving the Will of Jan. 10, 1778. My first thought was that this family was part of the late Linda Lawhon of Texas, family of Robert Boyd and Eleanor McCullough. On checking this family, Robert’s fifth son, Moses Boyd was born about 1766 and died about 1816. He married in about 1790 Hannah Milligan, the daughter of James Milligan. So this does not appear to be the Moses Boyd from the folder. The second Boyd family that I knew lived in York County, PA, was part of Captain Adam Boyd’s of Ireland descendants, John Boyd (1731-1799) and Agnes Cooper, daughter of John Cooper and Alice Gill of Baltimore, Maryland. However, there is no known Moses Boyd in this family. While the Boyd in the 1790 US Census for York County, PA are listed as:- BOYD, Andrew PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, Archibald PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, George PA Co: York Twp: Warrington BOYD, John PA Co: York Twp: Fawn BOYD, John PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, Robert PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, Thomas PA Co: York Twp: Warrington BOYD, William PA Co: York Twp: Unknown Moses Boyd’s location within York County, PA, maybe found by looking for either Adam Black and/or James Black Unfortunately, from the Will, it would appear that Moses and Catherine Boyd only had three daughters, so it is very unlikely that we can get any DNA matches between Moses and Robert’s families or any other Boyd family. So it will be important to find the descendants of these three daughters to see what dates and locations they can add to this direct tree. This family of Moses and Catherine Boyd of York County, PA, COULD BE A BROTHER Robert Boyd, who married Eleanor McCulloch, as they had a son Moses, who could have been named after a brother. Because the other known Boyd families came from County Antrim, Ireland, it may mean that Moses and Catherine Boyd also came from this location before coming to York County, PA. Do any members know of this family of Moses Boyd of York County, PA; can provide any additional information or know the Greenewalt family? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
