In a nice bit of serendipity, Mike Boyd is asking about the same families even though it is seen in separated parts. I will try to place it together in a shortened format: William, Thomas Boyd are from Armagh. Their sister (proved in a Will) married a Dobbins and lived in Northampton County, PA. Her land is next to the land of John Boyd (reported brother of Rev. Adam Boyd). So we have the following proven connections: 1) is the unknown father 2) William of Armagh (1709-1767) in Londongrove Township then Oxford Township, Lancaster County. Buried at Fagg's Manor with wife. 2) Thomas of Armagh (1713-1782) lived in Northampton, died in Philadelphia 2) Mary Dobbins ( b?? died??) of Northampton County, PA. I have her death but not birthdate. 2) MRS. Curry apparently around Philadelphia somewhere. 2) MAYBE John of Northampton and Rev. Adam of Octararo. Maybe because John and Adam are born in the 1690's. NEXT: 3) Brig.Gen John Boyd (William 2; Grandfather?? 1) and wife Mary Cowan (not Cowen). Moved to Danville, Northumberland (now Montour) County, PA NEXT: 4) John Cowan Boyd (Gen. John 3: William 2: Grandfather??) THIS is the John who mapped out the town of Shamokin however, he lived and died on the Boyd farm near Danville, PA Colin Brooks The 1718 project
When I was searching my PC for "Londongrove" I found this information by Mr Irish form about a decade ago "Literary Era Jan. 1898 Boyd Family John Boyd produced a certificate dated 2 mo, 10, 1736, for himself, wife Jane and children, from Ballynacree Monthly Meeting of Friends near Ballymoney, Antrim county, Province of Ulster, Ireland, to New Garden Monthly Meeting, Chester county, Pa 12 mo, 26, 1736-7. They became members of Sadsbury Meeting. At Warrington Monthly Meeting, York county, Pa 11 mo, 9, 1765, a certificate dated 8 mo, 21, 1765, from Sadsbury Monthly Meeting was recieved for John Boyd and wife. John Boyd, of Warrington township, York county made his will Aug. 8, 1770 and it was probated Oct 31, 1777. He mentions seven Children, 1.William, who receives 5 pounds 2.Samuel, who receives 5 pounds 3.George, who receives 30 pounds 4. Sarah Leech, who receives 30 pounds 5.Ann Bready, who receives 5 shillings 6.Elizabeth Stedham, who receives 1 shilling 7. Jane McMillan, who receives 30 pounds, and 2 pounds to buy her gown, together with my bed and furniture. (Q 313) He also mentions his granddaughter, Jane Marsh, to whom he leaves 30 shillings. Jane Boyd was disowned by Sadsbury Monthly Meeting in 1765, for a disorderly marriage with Gravenor Marsh son of Henry. Was she a daughter of William or Samuel Boyd? 1. William Boyd, then unmarried, produced a certificate, dated 6 mo, 18, 1733, "from men's meeting held in Antrim, in ye North of Ireland." to New Garden Meeting, Pa., 6 mo, 27, 1737. He became a member of Sadsbury Meeting. He married Hannah Minshall, widow, in 9 mo, or 10 mo, 1737. He is complained of 6 mo, 27, 1749 by Sadsbury Meeting for marriage out by a priest. He produces an acknowledgment, 11 mo, 6, 1752. At Sadsbury Monthly Meeting 3 mo, 4, 1754 a certificate is signed for William Boyd and Daughter to Warrington Monthly Meeting. This certificate was received by Warrington, 4 mo, 20, 1754. At Warrington 5 mo, 8. 1762 a certificate was requested for William and three children to Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Va. It was signed 1 mo, 8, 1763. 2. Samuel Boyd produced a certificate dated 5 mo, 8, 1741 from Grange Monthly Meeting, Ireland, to Sadsbury Monthly Meeting, Pa., 10 mo, 6, 1742. He is reported married out of priest, 5 mo, 4, 1743, and is disowned 8 mo, 3, 1743. 3. George Boyd produced a certificate dated 10 mo, 22,1760, from Warrington Monthly Meeting, and seems to have been a member of Newberry Meeting. George Boyd of Warrington township, York county, made his will Sept. 17, 1796, and it was probated Oct. 22, 1796. His executors were Thomas Leech and John McMillan. He Mentions his wife Catherine and children, James, Ann, Jane, and Rachel. Of these children Ann was received into membership by Warrington Monthly Meeting, 1 mo, 7, 1792 She was complained of 5 mo, 12, 1798 for marriage out to ---- Jones. She sent acknowledgment. From her cousin James McMillian's Bible we learn that Ann Jones, daughter of George and Catherine Boyd died Sept. 9, 1830 4. Sarah Boyd married 2 mo, 17, 1739 at Sadsbury Meeting, Thomas Leech, son of Richard and Sarah (Cox). They removed to Warrington, York county, Pa. 7. Jane Boyd was born, as her son James McMillan records in his Bible, in 1728; died 5 mo, 12, 1782; buried at Warrington Friends' graveyard. She was complained of 7 mo, 5, 1748, by Sadsbury Monthly Meeting for marriage out to Joseph Green. She produced acknowledgment 12 mo, 3, 1753. Jane Green, widow of Joseph Green, of Sadsbury, married 5 mo, 4,1756 at Sadsbury Meeting, John McMillian, of Warrington township, York county, son of Thomas and Deborah (Marsh). He was born 1728, in Antrim county, Ireland, died 9 mo, 17, 1791; buried beside his first wife Jane. (See LITERARY ERA, McMillian Family, Vol. III.,No. 7, p 212, Vol IV. No. 11, p 376). By her first husband, Joseph Green, Jane Boyd , had two children -(1) Joseph and (2) John. These two were recieved into membership by Warrington Monthly Meeting 8 mo, 11, 1764. (1) Joseph Green, of Warrington, son of Joseph, deceased, m. 12 mo, 16, 1773, at Warrington, Lydia Holland daughter of Henry and Lydia (Fell) of same place. " You will notice that William Boyd, the son of John Boyd and Jane Bell had a "certificate, dated 6 mo, 18, 1733" . So the QUESTION: Did Heber G Gearhart in the 1930's "MIX UP" this William Boyd, with the William Boyd (1709-1767), who was brother to Thomas Boyd (1713-1782) and father of George and Col Matthew Boyd, whom he said located in New Garden Township, Chester Co., PA? And this family of three brother and three daughters including Mrs Dobbins and Mrs Curry, did they also settle in New Garden Township or some other town in Chester Co., PA. Are there any "records" for the 1730's that might help sort out which William Boyd that is being talked about. It still will be worth using the DNA testing for the John Boyd and Jane Bell family with the three brothers form County Armagh to se if they might be connected.
