    2. Mike Boyd
    3. As part of the Heber G. Gearhart collection at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, I found some pages, which included the family of John Cowen Boyd who was born in 1793 in Chester County, PA and died 18 August 1849 at Boyd’s Station in Northumberland County, PA. He married Hannah Montgomery, daughter of General Daniel Montgomery and had seven children. John Boyd was the son of General John Boyd. I know that over recent years on the Boyd list, there have been a number of Emails on a “John C. Boyd”. However, I am not sure if this John Cowen Boyd is the same person being referred to? It goes onto say that John removed from Chester County and located in Danville in 1820. It then adds, “Miss Helen Wallace, 203 Pine St., Harrisburg, PA is publishing a book about the Boyd family.” I have not seen any such book by Miss Wallace on any list of books on Boyd families that I have been able to find. This Gearhart collection would have taken place in the 1930’s Do any members know if Miss Wallace actually published her book? And what was its title, etc? Are any of our members able to search any of the Harrisburg, PA Library’s Indexes to see if to she did publish? Or can some of the local Harrisburger’s check on their next visit to the public Library or the “Harrisburg local History society” may have any of her papers. Hopefully this will allow some members to find additional information on this Boyd family. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society

    3. Could this Danville have been Danville, VA? And then he went back to PA?? We have suspected that my Boyd's went back to PA near their death. If so it would sure be the missing link for my family. 3. This Danville is in Montour county PA. The historical society is located in Montgomery house. The origin of the name Danville comes from Daniel Montgomery. http://www.itourcolumbiamontour.com/wp-content/uploads/Montgomery-House.pdf -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Diggingupbones Sent: Friday, February 07, 2014 8:25 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [BOYD]John Cowen Boyd (1793-1849) & Hannah Montgomery of Boyd's Station Danville, Northumberland County, PA and Miss Helen Wallace's book Could this Danville have been Danville, VA? 3. >From the papers this Danville PA is in Northumberland county, PA. While the migrations were "normally" from North to South to obtain land, I have seem references of people going south to north after their land had grown too much tobacco and was no longer any use for agriculture. 3. Mike and others, As a general rule America was settled east to west and north to south. However, if you look at a large map, the Eastern coast of America slopes severly inward (westward). So much so that Maine was always called the "Eastward" lands from Massachusetts, and yet modern people would call it north of Massachusetts. We are truly idiots but that's another tangent.... Anyway, people ALWAYS settled the pathways (made by Indians, animals and traders) and waterways. The most significant is seen by our Scotch-Irish who (Boone and Crockett etc.) traveled NORTH from North Carolina into Tennessee; Kentucky and Pennsylvania into Ohio. So the migration would make a lot of common sense. Easier to travel up the Susquehanna River to Shamokin; Sunbury; Danville then cross over mountains into western PA. AND the land was very cheap. So that is the story for both John Boyd's in Northumberland County (original)- one settled Shamokin and the other settled Danville.
